700R slow to shift into Overdrive - is there an adjustment?

If you can't tell the difference between a Carter AFB and a Quadrajet, you need to have your eyes checked......

Martin

The fact that one is a spread bore, and one is a square bore, would lead me to believe that the word "exact" should not be used to describe their bodies.

who? he just said edelcr@p.. it could be either model...

pretty certain I've rebuilt more quads than anyone in here, probably 50 in the last 20 yr's..... perk of the prehistoric marine industry.. done my fair share of Carters too..

wtf are you talkin bout... the edel I just posted is a spreadbore, same as a quad...

:sign17:
it's to control the lockup converter... basically turning it off and on.. normally it's controlled by the comp and brake pedal.. it can also be set up to not only do it for 4th gear, but 2nd and 3rd too, mainly for towing... couple ways to do it.. go to the BTO link I posted and look under converter lockup wiring.. the B&M kits are pretty neat...

The B&M set up was about the best thing going, till just now. Compushift is about to release a lockup controller that will be the new one to beat as far as OE style function. We are supposed to get a sample to try in coming weeks. It won't be speed sensitive like the B&M, but throttle sensitive like the computer controlled models.

I was gonna run the B&M one when I got around to the K5 trans.... have to keep an eye out for that one.... :waytogo:

I apologize. I see what you were trying to say now. I thought you were saying a 1406 Edelbrock and a Quadrajet were the same.

High jack off.

Martin

I should have went and looked up the actual # I was thinking of.. 1406 was just stuck in my head... :doah: :D

Meh, I misunderstood what you wrote, and we both high jacked it. I honestly did think you were trying to say a Carter AFB and an Edelbrock were the same though for awhile, hence my confusion.....

Martin

at least he's on the right track now... hopefully a new, set, cable will save the slush box...

and now he knows just how damn important cable geometry is on a 700! :haha:

ryoken and crew,

Installed the new TV cable, adjusted it as directed and it works fine now. thank you for your help.

sweet... good job.. glad ya got it straightened out... :waytogo:

Well, my mechanic just installed a 700r4 in my ride and I hope he knows about the cable ! I also hope I now know enough about it to ask him if he knows about it ! I should see 2 cables coming off the carb. right? One will go to the gas pedal, the other to the tranny. I hate to tell you this but I do have a Edelbrock 750 h/p series carb. Do you guys see this as a problem ?The truck is still in the shop and I just want to do the right thing and not screw up my tranny. I also was going to try off roading with this carb. but, if it craps out on my while doing off camber stuff of steep hill climbs, I will change it. I've heard q jet were good if set up right. If not, F.I.. Sorry if my questions seem stupid to those who have done this time and time again, I love 4 wheeling but working on cars is not my thing. At least when it comes to transmissions ! Thanks guys !

yes, you'll have a throttle and tv cable.. if he's a pro mechanic, he should know how vital the tv is on the 700's... if not set right, it WILL shift funny, thus the OP's original post..

as I mentioned earlier, it's all about proper cable geometry on the tv and setting it properly.. as Martin alluded to, with carb swaps you have to watch out for carb spacers, adapters, hokey brackets, etc throwing the cable geometry off...

mainly what you want to look for is the cable being in a straight run out from it's sheath, not some funky angle... and being an appropriate distance from sheath mount to carb attachment... than just follow the setting steps I mentioned earlier...

read thru the BTO link I posted earlier, it goes into great detail on how the tv system works...

I am generally not an Edelbrock carb fan, especially the Carter style... not that people haven't had success with them.. there may be some offroad mods to help them out like Holley has..

I'm just a quadrajunk fan. I've been hawking them in here for over a decade.. poor man's fuel injection... imo, the best offcamber carb you can run... if I'm running 1000 hp, I'll run a Holley.. anything stock to moderate hp, I'll take a quad...

I'm sorry, I said Edelbrock and it is a Holley carb. I can look it up and get the part # but it is a Holley 750 cfm, H/P series. It has a Vic Jr. intake, no spacers or anything. By the way, it's a 11 to 1 compression 383 stroker sbc, putting out 550 ponies .

some people have good luck with modded avenger series ones.. but with the aftermarket intake and a holley, I would look HARD at the tv setup and make sure it's proper and functioning right...

check out jegs.com. they have already made mounts and adapters for most carbs to the 700R. I might be the best $20 you spend if it saves the trans
