just got 38's for the 87 and im still runnin 3.73s. im gonna try and order gears at the end of the week and im debating on whether to go 4.88s or 5.13s, the truck doesnt see the freeway that often and its used as my dd. opinions?

It would help if you told us what type of wheeling you do. Or are you just running a mall crawler?

I've got 5.13's and 44's with a 700R4. I can still use OD but only do when I'm on the interstate. You'll be good with 5.13's plus if you decide to eventually go to a bigger tire you won't have to worry about regearing later.

yah 5.13s with the over drive its pretty nice. I had 4.10s and 38s and on the highway it was nice that was with a th350 no overdrive

its mostly run on the street because its my daily driver but i take it camping/wheeling whenever i can so id still like to keep it capable. those with a 700r4, 5.13s and 38s what mph you doing on the freeway aand whats your rpms?

I run 37s with a 5.13s and it is about perfect for all around usage. At 65 I'm only turning about 2300.

Yep...unless you are running a 33" or smaller, 5.13's is almost always the answer.

IMHO, a 4.10/31" tire is the perfect gearing for both a small and big block. Factor in the added weight of big tires and you'd actually want to be geared slightly lower yet.....5.13's are perfect for 35's and are a must for 38's or so. With 44's, I'd prefer a 6.17 or something...

your rpm with that combo to do 70 mph would be about 2222.6 rpm's

Im so happy that this thread came up. I'M running 38.5 TSLs with 4.10s and its pretty good on the street But i want more gear for the mud and trails. I guess im going 5.13s

those who have 4.10 carrriers can go to 5.38's. why not, you're in there, might as well go as deep as possible.
