I have an 84 K5 with a factory 700r4. In drive, you can plant your foot and not reach 25mph. It doesn't feel like it's slipping, just feels like your foot is also on the brakes. Throw her down in 1st and manually shift, she runs like a banshee. She sat for 12 years and I've only put 10 miles on it with this problem. I figured I would see what happens with fresh fluids and a few miles.

Any other ideas?

Because he said when he shifts it manually it runs like a banshee.

Manual shifting is prone to causing that.

Here's my thinking:
If he can bury the throttle without the engine revving excessively, the tranny isn't slipping. If it's not slipping, the load must be outside the tranny, no?

I'd be checking the brakes too,and TV cable adjustment first off--it may have slipped or broken after such a long "nap"...maybe the stator is locked up in the torque converter ?...

Isnt there an over run clutch or roller that holds or doesnt hold or something when in manual first and not drive? Something along thise lines...

With as badly as it was moving in Drive, if it were the brakes, the thing would have never even coasted. Also, the 10 bolts are going in the trash soon.

I'll certainly check the detent cable. I have a friend who's an expert in those after swapping a number of SBCs and 700r4s into Mazda RX7s, haha.

My bet is that there is a problem in the valve body which is causing partial engagement of a clutch pack while in drive, giving 2 gears at the same time. Just not enough to lock it up like a trans brake would. Or maybe rust from sitting caused one pack to stick?

I have a SM465/205 for sale, with bell housing

Looks something like this? lol.

Ole' Blue (my Avatar) has an SM465/208 and has been amazing offroad. I could argue all day standard vs auto on the trail (I side with manny).

I thought about something along those lines as well (valve body). I figure I'll have my buddy check the detent cable. Then I'll put some Marvel Mystery oil or Lucas Trans Fix in it and drive it around the block over and over and see if anything changes. Worst-case, I can replace the valve body quite easy (I'm a big fan of NOT having to drop the trans). If the trans is coming out, it's just gonna get rebuilt as insurance.

It sounds like you are going to top gear very (too) soon which is causing poor acceleration. Make sure the tv cable is hooked up and in adjustment.
