can somebody please post some pictures or what are some of the distinct features a 700r4 has...

are some better than others?

i am going to look at one tomorrow and need to know what to look for, so I am turning to the experts!!!

thanks alot in advance

700 has a throttle valve cable from the carb to the front pass side of the case just above the pan.

Also the pan shape is square

Image Number Transmission(s) Pan Bolts
1 Aluminum Powerglide 14
2 TH200 (Metric), TH200C (Metric) 11
3 TH250, TH250C, TH350, TH350C, TH375B 13
4 TH375C, TH400, TH475, 3L80, 3L80HD 13
5 TH2004R 16
6 TH700R4, 4L60, 4L60E 16
7 4L80E 17
Note: Be careful not to mistake a TH250 for a TH350. The TH250 looks almost identical to the TH350 externally- same size, same oil pan. But unlike the TH350, it has a band adjuster stud and lock nut on the passenger side of the case near the cooler lines.

Some pan reference pics and pass side view showing the TV cable and dipstick.

1989 or newer I believe to be the best, fixed some of the earlier mistakes

I had an 85, it's worth finding the newer one since you will more than likely be rebuilding it anyway. Also, make sure it has the aluminum TC cover with support rods and has a BIG "K" on the bell housing.

No idea if all are cast identical, but here is a picture of the K case ID http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/images/thumb/0/03/700_k_case.jpg/350px-700_k_case.jpg

This isn't a bad page http://texasz.net/allan_and_rosanne/Z-Car_Stuff/4L60/ID%20A%204L60.htm A guy I know who I respected as a long-time professional trans rebuilder said that the "half moon" casting line meant it was a later/desirable trans (as in good casting, potentially better internals), and came about when the second accumulator(?) was added, which meshes with what is said on that page.

I guess only questions are how you'd identify one of the 60* transmission easily (with just the trans in front of you) and application, as GM put ONLY the parts in the trans that was needed to last in whatever application it was. An S10 pickup 700R4 almost certainly wouldn't have the same internals as a K5 700R4.

On previous GM transmissions, the metal tag (which was located on passenger side rear IIRC) indicated the vehicle line it was used in (Buick, Chev, Cadillac, etc) as well as the strength. If two digits the second digit was the "strength" rating. A "Z" would be the strongest trans, an "A" the weakest, all the way through the alphabet. Here is an example http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.p...ot-tranny-arrived-today&p=1468919#post1468919 in which case the second character is the strength rating.

Good link and the best way to ID the only type of 700R4 worth building. Any of the 87-92 K case units will be best for your truck. The pump casting number will end in "732" on the late models so you can also look for that.

I found a "k" case but the last number are not 732..
