I got a 91 k5 and looking for info on the trans.
Does anyone out there know how to go about makeing the 700r4 work at wide open throttle in 4th gear. I have owned countless chev's with the 700r4 and not one of them would go into 4th at WOT.

The corvette version does. What is internally different I do not know though...

mine did when it was in a light car w/4.88 gears and 26" tall tires....Not going to happen in a truck though not to mention it would build up a lot of heat as the convertor will always be unlocked under WOT.

yes i'm petty sure i have read somewhere that there is some parts out of a vette that will do the job, but what the parts are is the big question

as far as the converter goes, not to worried about it as i will not be running a lock up

Hopefully you mean you're going to buy the kit that eliminates the lock up convertor. If you just simply don't hook it up say bye bye to the trans in short order.

Why do you need to be in OD @ WOT?

In our rigs I would have to ask the same thing. Quite honestly with the aerodynamics you'll never pull anywhere near redline before you run out of hp (in drive) anyways. My '81 Jimmy topped out at ~100 mph in 4th gear with the SM 465. RPM was right at 4000 rpm. It just wouldn't go faster, even though in any other gear it'd easily hit rpm's well above 5000 rpm.

B&M makes a valve to let you go to higher throttle before downshifting to 3rd, but I don't know what kind of speed you would need to be at WOT without the downshift. Changing the governor helps a lot, but raises all of the shift points.

...still i don't get it, having myself a 91 K5 with 700R4, i never go on OD @ WOT, why anyway? it runs much better in 3rd on WOT, and does not, as you mentioned, shift up to 4th, i always thought i'd'll be just good for highway use, no?

as soon as i hit the throttle at OD, it shifts back to 3rd

...and still, what's the idea of WOT at low range? do you want to stay low on rpms or what? or do ya think on not mistreating the engine too much in 2nd or 3rd on low range?

i don't see the point of WOT in 4th with low range, meaning then you run offroads in low range, right? or am i completely wrong now...?

well the idea is to get to run wot in 4th while its in low range

If you're going that fast in low then it's time to kick it into 4high IMO. If you can't do what you need to do in 4high at that speed then maybe it's time for some lower gears instead of using 4low to compensate for a lack of gearing (that's kinda what I do is the only reason I bring it up). :D

There is a spring or a servo of some kind that was in the corvettes that let you do this. Sorry I can't be more specific, but a good chevy parts guy should know.

Unless you had one hell of an engine. hitting OD at WOT will just slow you down.
Too much air resistance at high speeds. A .76 to one ratio womt pull a 5000 brick out of it

But he won't be at high speed. He says he will be in low range.

One way to do this would be a full manual valve body. Or swap a Corvette valve body into a truck transmission and see how it works. I'm not really sure what separator plate should be used.

You could try one of these aftermarket valves:
