I have some (maybe dumb) questions about a 700R4 tranny--I'm thinking of buying a 85 K10 Suburban with a 6.2 diesel,and the tranny is losing overdrive and reverse shortly after reaching operating temparature..it has 160K on it,so I assume its on its way out--the usual "fixes" have been tried,like adjusting the TV cable,filter/fluid change,and some Lucas additive added with no change..
I know being diesel this trans will have a diesel specific torque converter,but I assume I could swap it into a 700R4 from a gas powered truck along with the diesel govenor,correct??..I forsee difficulty finding a 700R4 from a diesel of similar vintage here--all old trucks were crushed last year at the local junkyards!..
Another thing I'd like to know is if a Turbo 350 could be swapped in ,would the converter from the 700R4 work in a TH350,or no?..and would a TH350 fit up to the existing transfer case (either a NP208 or NP241,not sure yet!)..overall length the same,or not,would the crossmember bolt up??--driveshafts be "wrong",or work??..
I do have an old NP205 case with a TH350 adapter,but I'd rather not get too crazy swapping too many parts around..I'm getting too old and arthritic to be crawling under my trucks any more...maybe be best to just have the original 700R4 rebuilt??..I never liked them,too "sensitive" to the TV cable adjustments ,they seem to be fragile compared to GM's other trannies--I can get this truck real cheap,so I'm not looking to spend 600+ bucks on a tranny if I can help it..
