700R4 ??'s

Re: 700R4 ??\'s

[ QUOTE ]
GOLLY GEE, why wouldn't I want the 700r4...................The lower first gear is nice, the OD is nice. But I know, They suck....HMMM???/ I wonder how mine has lasted this long??

I tell ya what, I love my 700. It has been great. I keep hearing about how much they suck but I have had this one rebuilt once right when I bought the rig and it was a DD.
I spent the extra dough and had it built by a guy with a great rep with the 700's. I have since drive and wheeled the piss out of it. Personally, I think most of the trash talk about the 700 is just that, TRASH.

[/ QUOTE ]
You sound just like me in any other tranny thread. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That is beside the fact, my built 700 has lasted a long time and shifts better today than ever. What we were refering to is that since his K5 isn't going to be a DD and mostly a trail toy than a 700 would be kind of out of place sort of...would be better off with a th400 or 465.

PS...why do my posts go bold print when I quote yours? Turn off the bold...

You can remove the code for bolt by deleting the (B) that appears in his posts, or by adding the (/b) after his quote before you start typing.

Re: 700R4 ??\'s

Sounds like this guy needs to get a 3/4 or 1 ton 4x4 with a SM465 --then he'd have the tranny, all the stuff to convert it,and a set of 8 lug axles too.Too bad he's not near me--I saw 3 such trucks go into the crushers jaws last week,a friggin waste--I almost cried!. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

lol, "this guy" is actually looking for a 3/4 ot 1 ton truck with all the right parts for a parts truck, and I may have found one within driving distance that has everything I need. Only problem is it has a 465 with a divorced 205 t-case so that may pose a problem. I need to start looking around here for a cheap old work truck for sale.

Re: 700R4 ??\'s

A "divorced" 205 case??.Are you sure its not a rockwell??.By divorced I assume you mean separate from the tranny, connected by a small driveshaft from tranny to transfer--I havent seen a 205 like that, but there's a lot I havent seen yet!.I had a rockwell case in a 72 chevelle wagon on a 69 suburban frame, and we used the rockwell case to keep the diveshaft angles low(rear was almost dead level)and I loved the whine of the gears that case made, everyone thought I had a blower on it--plus the fact I could put any tranny, automatic or standard in front of it by using the appropriate yokes and U-joints,I had a passenger car TH350 in it,always wanted to put a M-22 Muncie in it,but never did it.I think the transfer being separate is a good thing--I dont really care for the tranny and transfer(and the brittle cast iron adapter)being all bolted in one peice--its a lot easier to do a clutch on the old style trucks with the divorced transfer case.Dont know why GM thought it was an improvement!. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Re: 700R4 ??\'s

AMEN Buddy! It's the same crap about 700's here and I just ignore it. Funny how my stock one lasted 178,000 miles. Then I had mine rebuilt right but people that are known for building strong trannies and you know what? It's lasted behind a 383 Stroker, 5.13s a round day trip to Austin, approx 7 hour day trip, and one trip down to College Station which was about 5.5 hours down and 5 hrs back and through all the offroading trips and heavy throttle usage. Nash and Stephen are some the hardest wheelers here and they run 700s /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

Yeah, everyone is right, 700 are crap /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I dont think anyone said they are crap, just expensive to build right compared to a turbo 350 or 400. I may still rebuild mine or I may just swap it out for a manual tranny. I have nothing against 700r4's myself, hence why Im actually thinking about ripping into this one myself.

Re: 700R4 ??\'s

I wouldn't call a 700R4 crap at all. I'd simply call it not well suited for a truck application.

[/ QUOTE ] This goes WAYYYYYYYYYYY past this thread. The argument about 700's has gone on since the beginning of time.

I beat the Crap out of my early 85' th700 with 100 and some odd thousand miles without much problem. I actually drove it to the tranny shop to have it rebuilt but it really wasn't showing any signs of failing, just was running a little warm and I wanted to get it built up for peace of mind. I think they rock for DD that will actually take advantage of it. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: 700R4 ??\'s

Well, as soon as you learn that I am never wrong even when I am wrong I am just sort of wrong wich doesn't make me wrong wrong just wrong in an unwrong wrongish wronglike sort of way and at that oint it really doesnt matter because I will then just blame RFGUITAR someone in a Jeep or someone else and then just say they are wrong because they are wronger then all of us. I mean on a scale of wrongness the facts alwayas show that the truly wrong don't really know the are wrong even when the wronglike

700R4 Rebuild

Just wondering if you did the rebuild on the 700R4 and how it went. I have one that died (85 K5) and am thinking about doing it myself. I would be happy to rent the video from you if you have it.
THanks and have a Great DAY!

same problem here

you know what's weird.... the same exact thing happened to me yesterday night when i was heading home. i was on the freeway and i stepped on the gas to drop it into third and it just started revin' up. from what i'm told is that the bands inside the 700r4 are problably stretcheted and worn out and now it wont grab anymore. ****ty when you just got laid off, evicted, and then yer damn transmission goes out on yer daily driver. good luck with yer truck though.

Its funny how now people say, well, 700's are expensive to build right, turbo400's are cheaper to build, and then people are looking at465, but no OD sucks, and then nv4500's are too expensive...

When its all said and done and you want OD, and reliability in an auto tranny, you can find it in a 700r4. Just Not at the price tag you want.

Same with the 465. its reliable, but if you want OD, you will have to get a 4500. And a price tag that fits that as well. Its all about the $$$.
