700r4 shift point?

Just an FYI: My 85 was on top also, and I bought the truck new.

Hmm, wonder if different years were different then. Mine faces the driver side fender and the TV cable can only go into the bracket one way.

hmmm, thats interesting.... knowing the auto industry, I wouldn't be surprised if they had a couple different brackets for dif years....

Glad we're on the topic! I have a TCI Maximizer(?) 700r4 in my Jimmy. It came in my 81 suburban behind a 454. The P.O. had cobbled in a bracket for the throttle/TV cables. In the sub everything seemed to work good for which ever way they had that bracket bent. (of course this was at sea level with a 454 and 4.10's) That trans is now in my 91 K5. I'm also using a factory TV cable (in factory setting on a stock 350 bracket) that I havent screwed with. With 3.73's 35's 6000ft altitude and a small block I have no history on, it just seems sluggish. It shifts strong, but it shifts early. I've been manually shifting it so I can get the gutless thing up to speed. should the TV cable be adjusted? should this thing be this much of a pig? I figured the altitude with this tire/gear combo was to blame... Thanks for any input!

edit: it also won't down shift until about 85% of the way to WOT

OK, so I finally had a spare minute to "set" my TV cable after suspecting it needed it. The little tab isn't the easiest to get to on my 90...can't even see it without a mirror.

First thing I did was note how far the slider was sticking out, just to see if there was any noticeable change before and after I "set" it. The slider was sticking out ~ 5/8". Duly noted. I depressed the tab, and pushed the slider back as far as it would go and while holding it there I released the tab. So far so good. I rotated the throttle to WOT...and the sldier didn't move at all :doah:

So, I depressed the tab once more and the slider slid out to where it was before. Pushed the slider all the way back and went to WOT. The slider clicked out about 1/8"-3/16". OK, cool...it did what it was supposed to.

I took it for a spin and low and behold it shifts like it should. Moderate throttle it shifted to second gear at about 17-18 mph and the shift, although not hard, wasn't mushy either.

I think the PO may have hit the release tab at some point thinking he was fixing something. It seems too coincidental that when you release the tab the slider pops out to exactly where it was.

Anyways, I haven't driven it more than around the block so far. I'll add more later. This tranny may not be in bad shape after all.

sweet....

one thing i learned with my 700 was to be damn careful when leaning/kneeling up in the eng compartment.. was working on something totally unrelated, must have leaned on, kneeled on the cable and pulled it out a couple extra clicks and didn't even realize it.... got in the truck to leave and it was shifting all f*cked up... reset it, fine....

Yeah, it might have been inadvertant. It could have been part of the reason he was selling it as cheap as he did, that and the coolant temp sensor deal.

Anyways, off to pick up my wife. I'll post up if it's as good as I think it is when I get back.

OK, it works exactly as it should now. I no longer feel any need to manually shift it. Kickdown, downshift and upshifts are all right when you expect them. Shifts are not harsh, and not sloppy...just normal.

The Blazer definitely feels a lot more spry now...which is saying a lot for a truck with 3.08's. ;)

x2 I was setting mine up and knocked off the mechanical oil psi gauge line while routing the new tv cable. I found this out when I had a few quarts of oil on the drive way...
