im about to attempt the swap from a th350 to a 700r4 in my 82 k5.

(beefy 350 ,th350,np208, 4in lift, 4.56 gears, 35's , built 10bolt front, 14bolt sf rear)

for pretty much all the normal reasons.

ive alredy purchased the monster transmissions 700r4 ss rated for 650 hp along with their torque converter , tv setup, and 2 cases of schafers.. i aqired an adapter thats supposed to mate my np208 in place. .. i have found the correct steering coulum at the salvage yard, just waiting on a day off.

i beleive my engine is already in the forward position.
it looks like my stock rear drive shaft should work since theres almost 3 inches of slip shaft yoke hanging out of my 208 now.

my front ds may not be long enough ?/

anyhow this is my first attempt at this swap and im just making sure i have all my ducks in a row before i pulll it into the shop.

i would really appreciate some pointers of anything i might have overlooked so far

Tell ya what, Measure your current TH350 setup, from the bellhousing(where it mates to the engine), to the end of your 208 tail housing. I will compare it with mine, as I have a 700r4 and a 208 in my burb. Measure your front driveline as well.

well that friday turned into today , and i forgot to measure the length , but i did measure my new tcase adapter to my old one and its the same ,, i got hosed for a part i already have ,, the output on the th35o hangs out about 5" the adapter is about 5".. the 700r4 tailshaft hangs out about 3" so im thinking the correct adapter is about 3"...

theres bound to be someone on here thats done this swap before,, i just cant find athread ... nor can i find an adapter..

The 700R is about 3" longer IIRC going from the 350 to the 700 will require some drivline mods.

Shorter rear shaft and a longer front shaft.

One nice thing is that any front shaft from a K5 or a burb of the same rating (1500 or) will fit.

I rear shaft from the same truck with the 700R will fit.

This is an easy swap.

Just be sure you get the right Throttle pressure cable bracket for the Carb/TBI or ?? as this is a critical adjustment that must be right or the tranny will not work right.

If the cable adjustment is wrong and the pressure is too low, you can fry the tranny in short order.

Be sure you use the 700R dipstick too.

Have fun.

...and 2 cases of schafers..

Seems like you got everything you need :waytogo:

If the 700 is longer, though 3" might be too much, but with the lift, mebe it'll keep the driveshaft in all the way :dunno: But I figure if that was the case, there'd be write ups on here about swapping driveshafts for that problem.

The TV cable on a 700r4 is easy to adjust, simply press the button on the side of the cable end, at the Throttle cable bracket, and push the outer part of the cable(housing) toward the Bracket(firewall) and then manually force the Throttle body to full throttle by hand, and you will hear the cable wrachet out to the proper setting.

Agree almost 100% on the throttle cable setting. Just be sure that the bracket you use is the correct one.

With the throttle at full open the cable should be all the way out and at the end of its travel.

I have seen swaps where the wrong bracket was used and it resulted in troubles.

This is something I am looking to have done. I have an 81 Jimmy with 350/350C/208/10 bolts front and rear with 3.73's LSD's/31" tires. My only goal is fuel economy and low end torque. I haul my boat and use the truck offroad for hunting and exploring. I have been quoted $2000 for the change. I have watched how prices of trannys have come down some, ie Monster. The ultimate would be a 400 with an Atlas on the backside.

ok i finally got the rite adapter .. but work, cold, girls, ect.. i have a edlebrock chepo carb and the tv bracket sent from monster... maybe i could read the instructions

You don't really need a new steering column, you just need the little indicator plate that screws to the dash with two screws and has the PRND321 or whatever written on it. My truck used to be a 700R4 and it has a TH400 now and I have the same steering column, just swapped the indicator plate. It would work without, just be harder to tell which gear you selected without feeling/counting.

well since you went the other direction it should work fine for you im going from a 3 speed to a 4 speed and ive been told that the actual coulum dsent have enough positions to reach 1st gear. ill break the ignition on the new coulum and check eventually.

I was told the same about the detent. I just got a Lokar shift cable, but haven't installed it yet.

Saw a couple of you guys are doing swaps I have all the parts from 700r4 back to the axle, using a 241 case. You'd need a manual speedo tail housing to make it work on an older truck. But it's available if anybody needs parts. Also have the 700r4.

Not trying to thread jack but it might help somebody.

Blazinmudd, is ur set-up for sale??? If so, how much & what's the condition??? It's a complete bolt in for my 86 aside from swappin the steering column...

well i have the "new" coulumbut its from a newer truck so ive got alot of wires an stuff to hack out

im planing on doing this swap to my 76 k5 my tranie is from an 88 suburban i will be watching this thread tell uss how the swap goes and any problems you ran into.
