Find an 85-87 donor truck and rob everything out of it. That will be the easiest. I say 85 and up because they are hydraulic clutch. Shoot 82355 a PM. He recently did this to his Suburban.

you will have the nightmare of swapping the pedals out.not worth the trouble.if you want a stick shift truck find one that already is stick shift.

I beg to differ. Although mounting the new pedals is the most difficult part of the entire job, it is very doable. I have done a couple now, both a hydraulic and a mechanical. I would recommend a hydraulic clutch. They won't bind up upon flexing. I think this is the best modification you can do to a truck with a TH700R4.

Here is the build thread for my 1988 V10 Suburban, there isn't a lot of info there, but feel free to ask questions.

What you want to look for to make the swap the easiest is a 1981-1987('91) (preferably 1985-1987('91) because they use a hydraulic actuated clutch) K5, K10(V10, V1500), or K20(V20, V2500). These models use a long output 32 spline SM465, with an NP208 transfer case. That way use can reuse your existing driveshafts. I would just look for a picked over parts truck, and buy the whole thing as long as all the transmission parts are still there.

A 1973-1980(1981-'84 in K30's) SM465/NP205 combo will require different length drive shafts. The NP205 is stronger, but also had a higher low range, and the two 10 spline male shafts with a coupler is a poor design. 1985-1987('91) K30/V30/V3500's use an SM465 with a 32 spline long output shaft coupled to an NP205 with a a female input, eliminated the coupler. They are a nice find, but rather rare.

Thank you for the help man. Another question is the steering column. Do i have to swap my existing automatic column to get rid of the shifter or can it b taken off????

No, you can go ahead and reuse the existing steering column, although you will have to remove the entire column to install the clutch/brake pedal assembly. At the base of the shifter handle is a pin. Just press it up. The one in my '85 K5 slips out all the time and I have to push it back down in the hole. Generally it requires a hammer, a small punch, and a few light taps to remove it. Or you can just leave the shifter handle there and confuse people. I've seen that before, as tacky as that may be.

hahaha the shifter would drive me NUTS. I checked out ur build page, ur burban is awesome I like. Thanx again for the help maby one day ill make a build page

That's a smokin deal on a NV4500. Make sure it is a NV4500 though...

NV3500...

You'll need a few other things to bolt up a NV4500. First question is is the NV4500 a 4WD version? What year is it and does it come with a Bellhousing? Is it one with an external slave, or the later internal slave? What T-case do you plan on running?

A NP241 or NP208 will bolt up to the NV4500 no problem, as long as the T-case is 32 spline. The output adaptor housing on the NV4500 has the generic 6 hole pattern.

External slave is nice, except the slave on the factory bell is on the passenger side and is prone to getting hit by the front driveshaft.

Internal slave eliminates that problem, but if/when the slave goes it'll usually take the clutch disc with it, and it's a pretty big job to replace it (vs an external slave.)

Advance Adaptors makes an aftermarket bell that puts the slave on the drivers side externally. That was the option I went with. They sell a bracket so the standard GM slave you'd find in our trucks fits.

Here is a good shot of the rear of the tranny. If the one you're being offered has a fixed yoke instead of this...then it's a 2WD tranny

Advance Adaptors bell. You can just make out the shift fork on the passenger side.

Close up of the fork and slave mount parts. The mount for the slave is for a Jeep slave which is pretty inferior to the GM piece. I don't think I have a pic of the adaptor bracket for the GM slave.

The NV4500 shifter sits about 5" farther back than a SM 465 shifter too.

one more, just cuz I'm a whore...

Aside from those issues it's the pedal hanger assembly that'll be the biggest pain. Just remove the whole steering column right away. I tried just dropping it, then I unbolted everything but didn't remove it from the truck, then I finally got smart and got it completely out of my way. once it was completely out of the way the pedal hanger swap was easy enough.

Where in BC are you? I'm just outside Vancouver...

tRustyK5:
im in the okanagan. Im swaping from an automatic so i dont think the shifter sitting back 5'' farther will be a problem??? Yes it is a 4wd tranny, Yes the bellhousing does come with it. Im gunna stick with the np208 TC to keep it simple. Im not shure the year, '94-'95 i think. Since i have to take the steering column out to swap the pedals i wanna run the column out of the 94-95 doner truck in my '83, will it work??? how much was ur adapter from advanced???? Will the pedals from the doner truck work in my '83 as well? I think thats it haha thanx mann

Not sure on the column. Almost sure the pedals won't work though, not without some modification that you'd have to find the hard way.

I would compare columns when you have yours out. I would also look for the pedal hanger assembly from an 85-87 pick-up (or up to 91 in a K5 Sub or Crew Cab)

The bell will work physically, but that year has the external slave on the drivers side. You will likely bust it right off with your front driveline. I paid $400 for the Advance Adaptors bell, another $30 or so for the small adaptor for the GM slave. My NV4500 is a '95 model.

I've had 2 blazers (my current '72 and my previous '80) with the SM465. This is a great transmission that is pretty much nuke-proof.

But I wanted to jump in and say go for the NV4500 if you already have to do the work to convert from auto to manual. You've got overdrive in that 700r4, you're going to miss that overdrive gear once you hit the freeway if you go with the SM465.

BigMike:
Ya thats why im thinkin the nv4500 will be my best bet.

tRustyK5:
$400 thats not to bad. As for the column i think im just gunna pull off the gear shifter and cover it in some camo wrap LOL. Thanx for the Help!

Adam

So as a final parts list from my understanding to complete the 700r4 to nv4500 swap i will need the following(feel free to add anything missing)

NV4500 Transmission & Shifter
NP208 TC
Clutch & Components
Pedal Hanger Assembly from an 85-87
Clutch Reservoir and lines, Can i use the ones from the doner truck????
Adapters from Advanced
Crossmember from doner truck????
And a little good luck!!

Thanx Again, Adam

If your donor is a 85-87(91) you can use the clutch master, line, slave etc too...

You may be able to use some pieces from a 90's rig, but the line will be different for sure, and I'm thinking the slave would be too. The clutch master might work.

Don't forget a 32 spline input gear for the NP208. Your current crossmember might just work.

Rene

so im probably best sticking with everything from the 85-87 as far as everything but the tranny, clutch and adapter then???

Also how can i make the pics in my posts smaller haha

You can use Photobucket to re-size them actually. I think they're fine for size though...not stupid big, but big enough for good detail. I'd leave them.

Yes, an 85,6,7 pick-up donor, or up to 91 in a burb or K5 would be the most helpful donor.

Really you only need the pedal hanger assembly. The rest you can buy brand new.
