700r4 to SM465 swap questions????

So, if I may be so bold as to ask, why is the NV4500 considered such an upgrade for people?

Yeah, it has an overdrive which might net you another MPG or two. But for the $1000+ cost and all the hassle, it would take you forever to recoup the cost. Especially given how rarely most people drive these trucks.

The SM465 is shorter, stronger and WAY cheaper. And of course, easier to adapt to transfer cases since it was a common factory option. And don't forget about that super low first gear in the 465.

For the record my tow rig has an NV4500 and my buggy has an SM465, so I've driven both a ton.

Thoughts?

Well, if you have a tow rig it's pretty useless, but for those of us with dual purpose rigs it allows us to run nice deep gears, and keep up on the highway while driving to and from the trail. I wouldn't say the 465 is any stronger either. Having been into both trannies. The NV4500 does have an OD issue behind a 6BT or similar, and it is less tolerant of low fluid levels. The actual hard parts are so similar in size and construction though.

I never hoped it would pay for itself in fuel savings...in fact I never look at most mods I do from an amortization standpoint. I want deep gears, and I don't want my motor spinning at 3000+ rpm on the highway.

Trail only? 465 for sure.

Im trying to build a dependable dailey driver with 37's and 4.10 gears that can go hunting and put up with a lil abuse when i have a few beverages around the bonfire on friday nights. Thats why i want a 4500. I work construction so my job site can b anywheres from a 5 min drive on side roads to an hour long commute on the freeway, thats why i dont think the 465 would b for me. Any thoughts???

4.10's and 465 would be just fine with 37's. I thought you were gearing deeper than that. 2400 rpm at 65 mph is perfectly acceptable for a small block.

It won't make a difference you'll be able to see. My old K5 got ~12 mpg with 3.73's and 35's. My current K5 get's about 14 with 3.08's, and 31's and OD. Old K5 was spinning at 2500 rpm with a carb, new one is TBI and spins about 1600 rpm. Both freeway numbers.

I'm aware of what fuel costs in 'Canada'...I live here too. ;)

Ideally you'd have 5.13's and an NV4500 with those 37's. Then you get the benefit of the deeper gears for off road, and still good freeway rev's.

Frankly, with 4.10's and 37's you'd hardly get to use the 5th gear. 1700 rpm on the highway is borderline lugging it, and every hill you'd have to drop down a gear. More annoying than it's worth.

Thank you soo much for all your help so far. If im gunna go with the sm465, will i still need the adapter from advanced??? Thanx again

No. You just need a Hydro SM 465 bell and related clutch parts. Then any era of SM 465 will bolt to that. I happen to have a hydro SM 465 bell and related parts here...

Rene

Really...what might they b worth to u????? Secondly, is $800 a decent deal on a rebuilt 465? If not where should i look for a RELIABLE unit? Are junkyard specials worthy? Sorry for all the questions im just trying to learn and WANT MY TRUCK BACK ON THE ROAD! LOL thanx again

That is pretty expensive for an SM465! I can buy them all day long for under $200 here in Alberta. Rebuilding them from top to bottom is about a $300 investment, unless the shift forks need replacing as well (then count on another $300) That said, they very rarely need rebuilding, as long as they've been kept full of gear oil.

A hydro SM465 shouldn't set you back more than $500, maximum.

finally got me a tranny and t case. I got a sm465 out of a '86 with bellhousing and a np205 and front driveshaft for $320 canadian. I think i scored big. The 205 looks like its the 6 bolt not the figure 8 style. Can anybody confirm if this is rare?????

Yes, much harder to find than the figure 8 style. That combo should be 32 spline too...

The reason it's rare is the only rigs that got that combo were the K30's. Out of a K10 or K20 and it'd have a 208 behind the 465.

Great score IMO!!

Ya i was pretty happy with my find, and it was a fun roadtrip to go get it too. Now I just need to get the pedal assembly and I think im set. Anyone have one kicking around the shop???????

Don't start whoring for parts in here. That's what the classifieds are for, and yes I do realize you need a membership to post up in there...

The transmission i got was a dud. Believe it or not the previous owner destroyed the mighty sm465. I took the combo to a local transmission shop they opened her up and it was mangled. They said the main shaft looked like someone put it on a lathe and took a chainsaw to it??? However the 205 was in mint condition. I picked up another 465 and took off the PTO covers and some of the teeth looked rounded. I then took off the top cover for a closer look and AGAIN this transmission looks beat. I am by no means a transmission pro but the teeth on 90% of the gears and such look chipped and or rounded. Luckily this ones got a money back warranty. Should i take it back or is what i described above a big deal??? Like i said im no transmission pro. Im just jones'n to get my truck back and i am running outta $$$. HELP ME

Money back guarantee...take that one back too. Takes a lot of abuse to ruin a SM 465, you're bound to find a good one sooner than later.

Rene

since its all opend up im just gunna throw it in my other truck and take it down to the transmission shop and see what they think. A buddy came by last night for drinks and doobs and took a look at it and he seems to think its fine, so i guess its time to get a professionals opinion fist hand.

I will post the results this afternoon.(please be good, please be goood)

The transmission checked out fine. No real dammage to worry about. A few odds and ends and its time to bolts this CU*T togeather FINALLY. any clutch recommendations???
