So, if I may be so bold as to ask, why is the NV4500 considered such an upgrade for people?
Yeah, it has an overdrive which might net you another MPG or two. But for the $1000+ cost and all the hassle, it would take you forever to recoup the cost. Especially given how rarely most people drive these trucks.
The SM465 is shorter, stronger and WAY cheaper. And of course, easier to adapt to transfer cases since it was a common factory option. And don't forget about that super low first gear in the 465.
For the record my tow rig has an NV4500 and my buggy has an SM465, so I've driven both a ton.
Thoughts?
Well, if you have a tow rig it's pretty useless, but for those of us with dual purpose rigs it allows us to run nice deep gears, and keep up on the highway while driving to and from the trail. I wouldn't say the 465 is any stronger either. Having been into both trannies. The NV4500 does have an OD issue behind a 6BT or similar, and it is less tolerant of low fluid levels. The actual hard parts are so similar in size and construction though.
I never hoped it would pay for itself in fuel savings...in fact I never look at most mods I do from an amortization standpoint. I want deep gears, and I don't want my motor spinning at 3000+ rpm on the highway.
Trail only? 465 for sure.
