Hey guys!

What could cause a 700r4 to loose absolutely all mobility, putting it into drive, or reverse results in absolutely nothing, as if the truck was in neutral.

I'm thinking the torque converter might be screwed up...

What do you guys think?

Russ

Wouldn't the engine really labour against the torque converter if the transmission's pump was locked up?

Pull the inspection cover and make sure that the convertor bolts are still there and tight and also that you can't spin the convertor by hand. If the bolts are there and you can sping the convertor by hand then you have a busted flexplate.

Filter blocked/broken. Fluid level low? Linkage still attached?

I have had a torque converter shear and leave no evidence anything was wrong. Power one minute...clunk.... no power at all, like it was just stuck in neutral. No other evidence other than the one clunk when it let go

Thats why I figured it might be the torque converter -- The lady said it made a heck of a clunk and thinking it was a busted crank or something more serious, she just killed the engine, then drug it home and listed it for sale...

I'm about to go out and tear the running boards off so I can actually get underneith the thing, and do some diagnostiscs :)

It's to my understanding the front pump is one ofthe frist things to go. Mine slowly went 4th 3rd 2nd 1st in a matter of minutes. didn't even attempt reverse.

the pump is directly connected to the engine, so if it did lock up, the starter would have a hard time to turn over. that said, ive never seen a pump lock up so i won't spin. my experence with the pump is when it goes there is little to no noise and when it does, you have nothing at all.

you said there was a big clunk, i have seen the input shaft seperate from the input hub assembly, but seems fairly rare.

Found the problem when I took the inspection plate off :)

Three bolts with boogered up heads fell and hit me in the head as soon as I dropped the plate off, torque converter freewheels, lol

I'm going to bolt it back up, and hopefully I'll have a perfectly good transmission :D

Don't you just love it when that happens!:D

Well, things never go that easy :P One of the bolts is busted off in the torque converter, and there is some nasty wear on the flywheel.

I'm going to drop the tranny and replace both with a set I've got sitting in my parts pile, gonna take a couple hours, but whatever, then this truck is technically done...
