Just put my remote tranny filter and gauge in my K5. But I was wondering what temp it should be operating at? When i'm idling it's around 195ish and when I'm cruising down the road around 65 it gets up to 250-260:confused: Is this normal? (I mainly ask this cuz I just had my tranny rebuild by a local garage that has been a pain in the arse and after taking my truck back 6 times:mad:, they say it's finally right)

i think its suposed to run at 200* or so, 250-260* seems a little on the hot side. is there plenty of fluid in the tranny and cooler? all i know is that on my the last long highway road trip driving home my 700r4 got so hot that the seals expanded and it was pissing fluid out as i was driving down the highway. fortunately i was able to pull off at a rest stop and let it cool off and put in some lucas no-slip and more atf fluid and i was able to get it home without any farther issue.

Yeah, I just topped it off with fluid. I'm running like 25,000 GVW B&M tranny cooler (supposed to be for RVs and heavy towing) so I figured it would be running cooler.

Where's the temp sensor? I have two on mine. One is coming out of the B&M 25K cooler and the other is in the presure port above the shifter linkage.

On the hiway, the cooler temp is below 100*, but the pressure port is close to 200* or more depending how long I drive. I tell you this because you can have a huge variation in temperatures depending where you locate the sending unit.

From what I understand, the normal operating temperature needs to be 160*. And that's what my cooled temp shows on the trail with little air moving through the cooler.

Temp guage should be located in the tranny pan and normal temp should be around 180-210*. Getting the tranny much hotter than 210* and you're asking to burn up a trans in short order. The fluid needs to get hot enough to burn off residual moisture but not so hot as to boil the fluid. At the current moment i only run the cooler in the radiator and with my guage mounted in the trans pan i see normal temps of 170-180 unless i'm pulling a grade or in 3rd gear rather than OD and then the temp will go up around 200*

yeah, that's what I thought. I think there's still something jacked up with my tranny then cuz there's no way I think it should be getting as hot as it is especially considering where my sensor is located

Are you sure that the converter is locking up in OD. If not, that's a major generator of heat in the tranny.

It's easy enough to test for convertor lock-up. Drive down the road and get the trans into OD and then while driving slightly rest your left foot on the brake pedal, RPM's should go up about 300 rpm or so. If this doesn't happen then the convertor isn't going into lock-up and heat will be generated as previously said.

If you have an infrared temp gun get the trans hot and aim it at the trans pan and i'll do the same and compare readings. Temp will definately change depending on location of temp sender.

not sure. I know the shop did have my lock up unplugged. they said it was because my gears were too high (back when I had the 36 and 3.08) so they left it unplugged. Took it back, and I don't know if they did anything else, but they plugged it back in

I know we got a temp gun on the engine I work off of, I'll drive it up there and see what's up. I'll try that trick to see if my torque converter lock-up. Be back in a while and let you know

Maybe this is what caused my pan bolts to come loose and fluid to start leaking. I guess it's time to invest in a cooler, since I'm running 35's on stock 3.42 gears. I don't drive it much anyway, but that's probably not too good. How much is a good cooler and where do you get them from? Are they a pain to install?

just got back. got it up to speed in OD and applied the brake gently and nothing. It just slowed down about 15 MPH with no RPM change. Checked temp of pan and it varied. In middle of pan it was around 200. it was about 300:eek1: in the corners of the pan and around 220ish on the drivers side of pan. ALSO, when I was coming back to my house it started downshifting so hard into first that it was almost barking my tires:eek1:. Thought I was about to break something. Think I can definitely say the trans is still F**KED UP!

Honestly, id stop driving if you can til you go to tranny shop. IT shouldnt be anywhere near above 200. Ive got a 700r and I can sit in florida hot traffic and when its shifting alot it only gets up to 180 and thats after a bunch of driving. Ive got my sensor in the tranny itself at the high pressure test port hole (drivers side above the pan). ive got a tranny cooler and running thru radiator.

Any write up on how one of these is installed? I guess the cooler itself is placed in front of the radiator?

Is it possible the TV cable isn't set properly? I know it is important on the 700r4, not sure it would create a high temp. situation though.

I don't think it's the TV cable. I truly believe it's the shop trying to screw me. My good friend quit the shop while my Blazer was in it and he told me that he didn't think they replaced the torque convertor like they told me and they just robbed parts off of another 700 instead of ordering new like I had been told. Last time I brought it to them I told them this was their last chance to get it right or I was gonna take them to court. I guess the didn't think it was important enough yet again to get right.
