Been wanting to add an 8274 to my '74... found a winch and a bumper. Anyone ever mounted one of their original bumpers? They used a separate bracket set for mounting the bumper (I called Warn). Given the mounts in the pic below are the same width as outside of my frame, I assume it's basically just two flat pieces of plate drilled appropriately? Anyone have one mounted or remember what it looked like?

Thanks
Charlie

Warn offered 2 bumpers like that, a 1 piece like yours and a multi piece version where the wings bolted together and to the winch plate.

I’ve only owned the multi piece version and those bumpers used a piece of flat plate to span between the bumper and frame. The outboard last 2” or so was bent 90 degrees to bolt the top plate to to reinforce it.

I mighy have the multi bumper mounts still . I scrapped 1 that was ruff but kept the center and mounts . They had the correct holes for there bumper and vehicle side so bolt on job .

You can do what Larry did with his Warn bumper. He made the plates to lift the bumper up and over the lower valance.

You can see how much taller his brackets put the bumper up above the lower valance. But also it provides a little better approach angle than with it lower.

Compare that to the one-piece Warn bumper I used to have on my 1991. It's below the valance and leaves a sizable gap that is pretty noticeable.

If you zoom in on the pic of Larry’s custom raising brackets you can see some of the Warn bracket clamped to the inside of it.

How is Larry these days? He is a treasure of GM info!

Thanks for the comments and the pics. Definitely will be above the valence and looks like I need to mount the winch to make sure it clears my grille when making my pattern.

He’s a nut. Just like always. He’s busy with family stuff, but still plugging away on his stuff. Though I created a distraction by introducing him to the world of rc crawlers. He’s going bananas on a clone of the k10 in 1/10th scale. 20240116_171503.jpeg

The scale stuff lets his detail oriented brain go crazy. Pretty fun to watch.

I made a couple of plates to mount the bumper and used the old end support setions with another modified plate to support the outer ends.
I would make sure you have sufficint clearance from the valance or body as frame flexure will allow the bumper to move around. I have to re-adjust mine.
I made the outer plates. Even with that spacing flexure has scrapped the paint off the valance.

A question for those in the know on these WARN winch mount bumpers - I noticed that on both of the one-piece bumpers in this thread that the winch mount plate is flat but on the other multi-piece set ups the winch mount plate has a small 90* lip up top that I assume is for structural integrity.
Well mine is a multi-piece set up but my upright plate is flat with three horizontal creases spread out across the top portion but no bend. Not worried about it being weak but just wondering if anyone knows if this is just an older version and through the years they changed to the bent lip design?
Thanks, Tom

When WARN released the heavier winch (M12000) they went to a formed upper lip - later, the manufacturing process also changed from an outside locally sourced stamped part (with dimples) to a laser / formed part (with former upper lip)

That one in pic is an OLD one - prior to the stamped "W" in the center

Thanks for the info from all Y’all.

All I got is an 8274 so it will go good with my ancient winch mount and my persistent old school cool vibe.

Appreciate all the comments and info.
Thanks, Tom

@Engineered Vintage - just outa curiosity do you have any idea on when WARN introduced the top lip bent or “W” stamp mounts ?

This is my other 8274 on my 78 FJ40 with the 90* lip but no “W” stamp - my buddy owned this since 2005 and his neighbor owned it since the early 80’s and said it was on it for years before he got it.

Thanks, Tom

I just looked at the “CJ8” WARN bumper thread and see where you commented on the lip being introduced with the 10 & 12 big winches - good info!

Just so you know few mods makes these old 8274 winches a 10k rated to match newest versions sold now . So dont need to swap for bigger if yours is still good and you want a little more power .
