70's-80's classic Warn front winch bumper

Always interested in more power ! A while back I read about using one of the more powerful motors off of a 9,500 more modern winch but is there other mods available for durability?

With out going down the rabbit hole easy swap is new xp motor swap . Make sure you have multi spline gear . If not get one also .

Albright relay upgrade is good also .

I’m still stuck in the 70’s&80’s and wouldn’t know facebook if it was standing right next to me….
NVRENUF is constantly wearing me out and wants me to use it but I am slow on try’n new stuff like that - besides it’s probably just a fad and will go off the air the day after I would join.

Some folks at work tried to show me the ole facebook and all I saw was people tak’n pictures of what they ate at a restaurant and writing about complaining about stuff - I just didn’t get it.

Appreciate it though!

@Engineered Vintage - just outa curiosity do you have any idea on when WARN introduced the top lip bent or “W” stamp mounts ?

This is my other 8274 on my 78 FJ40 with the 90* lip but no “W” stamp - my buddy owned this since 2005 and his neighbor owned it since the early 80’s and said it was on it for years before he got it.

Thanks, Tom

I'm honestly not sure - I was an Engineer there from 2000 until 2007. Not sure of when change was.

They did track those changes - but all of them were interchangeable (to a point) - and big change was moving from stamped parts to laser/formed parts.

When I was there, focus was on current year model trucks 99-07 Chevy, 99+ Super Duty, 94-02 Dodge, TJ

All of these "cool" old products (Enforcer, Classic, etc...) were slowing down and were obsoleted in 2004/2005ish

@tarussell @sweetk30 I just ran across an Instagram video of a Malaysian truck with an 8274 with both an electric motor AND a PTO drive on it. :eek1: Crazy! I have no idea how to post / link it here.

@nvrenuf yep its been on the FB page also . its a rare option for the hydro drive . i think more used on like unimog vehicles . then i think they used the aftermarket upper cover for twin motor and added 1 electric motor so they had options . but i didnt read in to it all the way so just my best guess .

they have gear sets for different ratios / speeds and wider drums for more cable . roller bearing end support kits . air free spool drum kits to skip the warn unit thats kind of o.k. . twin drive motors . . on and on and on . you can build a whole winch from aftermarket parts now . . . hell a new warn 8274 is almost 4k

I saw the different ratios on that “Gigglepin” web site - it surprised me to see so many faster speed gear sets offered.
I always considered the standard gearing of the 8274’s to be somewhat fast in stock form.
I guess I just got use to the slower worm gear driven winches and the commercial hydraulic wrecker winches that were fairly slow but mighty strong pull’n power.

Good to see so much aftermarket support and options for WARNs old but mighty user friendly spur gear drive gem.

I almost got a light used gear set for 25% faster . Talked with the dealer selling it and he said for my needs do NOT swap ratios . Just do XP motor swap and albright relay upgrade . The faster ratios are for light weight and race applications for the most part . Our big stuff just stay stock ratio .

My 1 winch needed new upper gears and warn only sells loaded upper cover for over 250 ish . . I got a gigglepen kit gears / shaft / bearings shipped for almost 50 bucks less .

I've posted the part numbers before for the upgrade to the new spec 8274 from an older one. I've got my own 8274 sitting in the garage to upgrade myself.
