71K5 - BP71K5's Just for fun build

Yes. Wasn't planning on it but I'm needing to focus on other things. I'll probably still finish putting it together as time allows.

You will regret selling...but if you gotta do what you gotta do. :dunno:

I know that I still regret selling my last Landcruiser and that was 10 years ago. :doah:But we needed the money more than the rig so....

Good luck with it!

It's still here, not surprisingly...did a bit of work too it. Finished up the cage, patched in the other rusted rear fender section, and got the wheels back on. Even took it for a drive around the block. Unfortunately I've got to trim the front fender fang to even turn on flat ground. More updates later.

Those wheels look great Brian! Glad you got to work on it some! Cut those fanfs off on burn some fuel:saweet:

Nice work Brian...

It seems like youve already done 90% or the suffering required to get this truck into shape. To my view, it's time for the big payoff which is to enjoy it. :waytogo:

Hope you are thinking of holding onto it now?

It's not currently being offered for sale. I realize its kind of a vague statement but the sale wasn't financially motivated, it was more that every spare moment I had was devoted to this thing. I'd stay up late in the garage, tinker with it on weekends, etc. Thankfully I was reminded of what was important before it was too late so for now, yes, it's staying in the driveway.

That's great news, Brian. :waytogo:

Now that it's all back together, drive the hell out of it. If not for you, for the guys that have had their stuff torn apart for years. We need to live vicariously through someone that can put it in gear and DRIVE.. :D

I was just wondering the other day if you still had this. Glad you kept it. Sometimes life(or wife in my case) smacks you upside the head and you have to reorganize. Truck looks good.

Glad to hear its still in the driveway Brian. We all have to refocus priorities at times. Trust me, I understand.

I took an hour today to make some room for the tire under the front fang on the drivers side.

I took a little more than an inch at the tip where the tire was hitting and then tapered it up about 8" to try and keep the curvature of the wheel well looking normal.

Then I simply squeezed the gap closed a little at the top and put a hot tack at the joint. Then just worked my way down an inch at a time. It worked well but I ended up having to cut the lower lip off and re-weld it back on the bottom. Now I have to fabricate a small patch in the gap you can see in this photo.

That seems to let the tire clear for now and I can drive it a bit more while I take my time patching in the rest.

After the welds cooled, I took my daughter to the grocery store with her sitting up front for the first time as well. It was fun for both of us and we both got to experience the dust-bunny tornado in our eyes that always occurs when you take a K5 out of storage. A good time was had. :)

Update 10/28/12

I had to replace the radiator this weekend. When I went to pickup my tent trailer two years ago, I forgot to plugin my electric fans. The truck tan fine on the freeway home since there was plenty of wind, but once we got home, the temp got way high and it blew. I had thought the only damage was to a hose but it leaked ever since then and was getting worse.

So a griffin "exact fit" aluminum radiator was delivered and installed. It wasn't truly an exact fit, but close enough. It's a hair bigger than stock so the mounts had to be squeezed a bit more than normal.

Then took the kids out on a bike ride to "test it for leaks."

I got some primer on the front fender fangs as well. I still need to do something with the rear to make the tires clear more but it's ok for the street now.

And my boy wanted to show off his "silly face" that he thinks everyone enjoys. On our drive he kept asking "Daddy, it's too windy! How do you roll the windows up?" Sorry kid, you'll enjoy it someday. :)

Update 11/12/2012

I magically had some free time this weekend to goof around with this thing and decided I really wanted to go back up to Hollister Hills.

But then I remembered the rear fender being really close to rubbing and decided to ponder what to do about it while I did some cleaning in the garage. At the end of the weekend, here's where I ended up. Anyone tried this method rather than just trimming the front off? I've seen it done on a later model but never a 69-72.
