71K5 - BP71K5's Just for fun build

Thanks! When do we get to see some burn out videos of yours? I ditched my AC/heater to make room for a future big block like all you guys have and I need some more motivation.

I'm waiting on Dr. Ducato to finish the new transmission. Soon.

Update 7/4/2016

In the middle of waiting on some parts to upgrade my compressed air system so I can spray some expensive CA compliant paint.

While waiting, I'm having fun derusting parts to prep for paint. Here my ashtray which was filled with crazy rust. I put it in a paint mixing cup and filled with "metal rescue" in the morning before work. Took it out at the end of the day and here's what it looks like. You can see the rust line up at the top with the clean metal below. The entire inside of it was as rusty as that top line. It's pretty satisfying to have to do zero work and have it come out like that.

Update 07/06/2016:

Not very fancy, but inside of ash tray is now painted epoxy black and the front face is prepped for paint along with the glove box door. Rather than spray out some tests on cardboard with expensive paint, I figured I'd try it out on these two things since they are easy to blast back to bare metal if I don't like the color. And if I do like the color, they'll be all done.

The glove box door had to have a pie shaped cut out and welded back together so it closes with the cage bar that goes through the dash. You can't tell that was done anymore, but that's the point.

You have to turn your phone sideways to see the post number (if I remember right), and clicking the post number on the computer works to get the link, but here it is (post 355):

I can see the numbers you referenced in my link.

Thanks. Of course since I moved the cage bar to go through the dash instead of in front of it, modifying the door isn't needed anymore. Oh well.

I would love to do a cage someday and was thinking in front would just be easier.

Did you find that going through the dash was better? Better room, better looks, better function? All of the above? Just wondering if you thought the switch was worth the extra work to change it.

In front of the dash was kind of a pain in that the air door by the footwell was blocked, along with the window crank and my knees were all really close. Going through the dash I was able to tie it straight down into my rocker box replacement tubing. It's structurally more sound and looks a lot better. Totally worth the effort.

Of course, I'm also planning on adding some engine cage bars to help stiffen up the front half of the frame as well. That helped with the decision too.

Update: 07/07/16

Getting closer by doing my best to make up for an underpowered air compressor. This is my version of a water trap for compressed air. Working well so far. Air enters at the top right and then winds its way down to the bottom where there's a small section to hold condensation that has hopefully cooled out of the air as it travels down the ~18ft of copper tube. Then it goes back up into a dessicant filter and into some upgraded air hose. i also had to upgrade all my air fittings from 1/4" to 3/8".

Update 7/12/2016

Did some test spraying of my dash parts. Ashtray door and glovebox hinge got the same treatment.

This is just the color coat. Clear comes next.

Trouble is when I was cleaning the gun with a spray hose, I came back to look at the door and found a few water droplets laying right in the middle of it. :doah::(

Update 07/19/2016

Took a vacation day from work today and just went for it.

Used my roll cage as a makeshift spray booth. Used a big 24" fan and a couple furnace filters to clean the air going into the fan. The intent was not to seal the surfaces from paint, but keep a nice current of air over them to help prevent bugs and dust from settling on it. Sprayed down the driveway and surrounding areas with water to help keep dust at bay as well.

First coat of PPG envirobase HP "hugger orange". This is a water based paint and is a little tougher to spray, but it drys fast and is super easy on my delicate skin. It's also what a lot of auto manufacturers are using now so I figured it should be good enough for me.

I spent days wet sanding everything that would be visible with 400 and 600 grit paper. The water base paint ends up being very thin mil thickness so it really shows any scratches that are in the primer coat. First coat drys out very matte and covers really well even with this orange. You can see what looks like a run, but isn't, but is. That's the seam sealer that I missed smoothing out. It's covered by the cowl so not too concerned.

And first coat of PPG EC530 clear. Goes down fairly nice. I was fully suited up for this stuff as its traditional solvent based clear. I also get allergic reaction to urethane so got new carbon filters for my respirator as well. No selfies of that though.

And final coat of clear.

All in all came out pretty good. I did find one run on the dash. I think it can be buffed out fairly easily after it drys. Other problem was caused by having to go from outside the truck to inside while spraying. You can see this wooden frame I used to keep the hose from running the rockers in the fresh paint, but I forgot about dust on my feet and so there's some lint and dust on the rocker on the passenger side. I'll buff that and reclear if needed.

But this gets me back to where I can reinstall the windshield and get it back into running condition for the rest of the summer.
