71K5 - BP71K5's Just for fun build

I don't mean to be a d*** but IMO, with a budget of $2k (to include efi) this needs to be a rering job with bearings and walk away. This type of swap will nickel and dime you plus when you add the efi conversion I don't think you'll have any room for fancy heads or upgrade machine work on your heads, cam , etc.

Yea, budget will obviously need to increase. I know how these things go. If my budget was $10k, I'd still go over budget. :)

It's still a little early to know how much though. I wanna get the block cleaned and inspected then go from there. Probably sticking with flat top pistons, and replacing all the bearings at a minimum.

Pop a couple caps off an take a look at the bearings. The minute you drop this off for an "inspection" you can double your budget with EFI factored in. I just went through this exact swap myself ended up having the crank polished and measured and I installed new bearings with the pistons still in the cylinders. New timing set, gaskets, freeze plugs, intake manifold, fitech, distributor, fuel system etc. I'm well over $3K, probably closer to $4K.

Might as well stick w/ a SBC then.....119cc heads are not friendly w/ flat tops. Compression is what makes these engines fire breathing A$$ kicking machines! :burnout:

Has anyone on this site actually had a budget and stuck to it? It looks like it has dished pistons now so going up to flat tops should boost compression a little without getting crazy?

Sounds like it's starting to make sense to you why the new guy in the "cookie club" doesn't have to pay to eat the club cookies the first time around....... :haha:

After some number crunching, I decided to change course and try to stick closer to my budget. Cleaning it the best I can myself, not taking it anywhere to get inspected. It'll get a cam, fuel injection, headers, oil pump, intake. MAYBE have the heads looked at since I have to replace springs anyway.

Used nearly a gallon of WD-40 and lots of scrubbing to get it this clean. The oil pan had some chunks of unknown stuff in it and I'm assuming it was knocked in there from when I removed the intake. Figure new oil pump will lower my chance of breaking something. Still gotta get the balancer off and clean the rest of the oil lines as best I can.

At least a timing chain as well...cough cough!

You can cheat on the head gasket a little to get compression up if your gonna leave the stock pistons in it. The standard deck clearance is .025 and most common head gasket is .039. So with that setup your looking around 7.90-7.95:1 w/ the big open chamber 119cc heads. Or find a cheap set of closed chamber around 105-110cc chamber. That would get you in the ballpark of 8.45-8.75:1 Also when ya take the timing cover off pop the 2 oil galley plugs out and drill them to .03, it'll help w/ oiling of the timing chain and also help w/ air lock @ start up....

So you still thinking the Comp Cam 11-235-3 cam?

11-231-3 is leading at the moment. Timing chain may get replaced depending on wear.

Wow, with all the time your putting into this great looking K5 & skimping out on small stuff like that. If your trying to save money just to put FI on it your defiantly putting the cart before the horse! I've seen it happen many times, Just don't want it to come back & bite ya in the A$$.

It's already got fuel injection, just changing the type. In this case, it's half money and half time. I can't rebuild an engine and not do it right. This way, it's just cleaning up what I got and take a chance. I can have another built to drop in later as time and cash allow. Too many opportunities for "might as well".

If timing chain is a wearable item, I have no issue replacing it. Don't worry, appreciate the advice.

Quick question about the oil pump pickup. Is the pickup cleanable or is a new pump with new pickup more better?

After driving my truck around a couple days I was thinking you would likely be pretty happy with a basic 454. I'm very pleased with the get up and go mine has and my truck probably outweighs yours by 1500 to 2000 pounds.

That's good to hear. I backed off on a few more of my "might as well" upgrades and had to double down on some others. So I can use the extra encouragement that this thing isn't going to be a dog.

I was waiting on parts to put it back together. Then I ruined the cam bearings removing the cam so I'm waiting on tool to replace the cam bearings. Doing everything I can to resist the urge to remove the crank and pistons.
