71K5 - BP71K5's Just for fun build

Absolutely awesome build. Got to be my favorite one on this site. Just read through all of it. A+ work on everything. Can't wait to see the exterior of truck painted

Update 4/22/2017

Got my blast box working and tested it out on my manifolds since I need to replace the head gaskets. Did some clearancing on the outer ports since they seemed to have way more metal than needed and I'll try and pretend it'll help the motor breathe a bit better.

These used to be caked with Hollister mud.

Ports opened up a bit.

Update 04/26/2017

Decided to try the cerakote glacier black coating. Supposed to be good at least to 2000F. Worst case is that it burns off like every other high temp coating. I'm super skeptical an air dry coating will last more than a couple days, but we'll see.

I did try smoothing out the castings a little bit before coating, but the coating is supposed to go on really thin so it doesn't hide anything. But they still look a lot better than they did, and I'll have some more tuition paid towards building up my painting skills.

CeraKote comes in a spray can? I had been looking at it for a way to do a color change on my heims and for other exhaust stuff.... but it had to be applied by my local powdercoater. :dunno:

Not a can, but a bottle. Look up the "glacier" series. Hvlp gun with a 0.8mm tip + 5 days air during.

Update 04/29/2017:

Of course this would happen AFTER I paint the manifolds. Looks like new motor budgeting need to begin.

Bore scope through the spark plug hole?

Wanted to update the build thread. Picked this up this morning. Came out of a 1985 running driving 1 ton 454 truck. Shouldn't have sold my engine stand but not sure it would have held this thing anyway.

So much LOVE for this update!!! (Which apparently comes from 5 days in the future....?) :dunno:

:) Welcome to the Dark Side.... the cookies are delicious. :)

WE HAVE TO GO BACK!
...Picked this up this morning.
Very nice score. Hang around here, and one might think only a big block will fit in a first-gen. I like that.

Exactly what mine came out of. I ended up buying an engine stand from Summit that rotates. It's rated for 1000lbs like the HF stand I had but it's 100 times better. Of course it cost about 4 times as much.

That's good to know. I didn't even trust the HF stand with my small block. Might be worth the extra dough.
