72 C10 - longbed muscle truck

Going to document the build of my 72 c10 here. I have owned the truck for a year now and it has been good. Have only had one problem which was a rusty fuel tank. After that its been dead reliable. Its got the original 350, was rebuilt 5000 miles ago, runs great. Problem is, it has a 2.73 rear gear so its a dog. I have wanted to build something 2wd and fast for awhile now, part of why I got the truck. I want to eventually have a nice hot rod that I can cruise around town in and do burnouts. Truck will probably see little highway use, only to haul my dirt bike to go ride an hour away. Truck is solid and 99% rust free and has pretty decent paint. Nice looking old truck. Haven't decided whether or not to lower it yet, Im thinking no but I do want all new springs all around eventually.

I decided to buy a top end kit for the motor to hop it up some and hopefully make 320-350hp and slightly over 400lb ft. of torque. Pulled the motor last weekend and disassembled it, now it is starting to go back together. It is a 4 bolt main. Also getting the trans rebuilt while its out with a shift kit. Once everything is back in I am getting new rear gears and a locker and tires. I need to decide between 3.73 and 4.10. Running 29 inch tall tires. After this project will be brakes, steering and suspension.

Will update this thread with pics along the way.

fun but still cruise = 3.73 .. . . . you will notice it over the 2.73 . my buddy did a 2.42 to 3.42 swap years ago in a 70's Pontiac t/a and said WOW .

now 2339 rpm @ 70 . 6.88:1 power leverage / crawl ratio
3.73 is 3196 rpm @ 70 . 9.40:1 power leverage / crawl ratio
4.10 is 3513 prm @ 70 . 10.33:1 power leverage / crawl ratio
these specs are th350 auto with 29" tall tire .

you see the massive power jump in leverage with just the 3.73 swap .

just for kicks if 700r4 swapped in for low first and lockup/overdrive.
4.10 is 2328 rpm @ 70 . 12.55 power leverage / crawl ratio

p.s. ......................... sexy truck man :burnout::bow::cool1:

Intake and balancer on. Valves adjusted. Debating whether to buy a new oil pump before I put on my new pan. Theoretically the oil pump was replaced 5000 miles ago when the motor was originally rebuilt but I can't say for sure that it was. For the price I think I'll buy a new one just to be on the safe side even though this motor had good oil pressure.

Got it painted today, waiting on oil pump to put oil pan on. Transmission is currently at the shop being built. Hope to have it back in the truck by the weekend after this one, cousin is getting married this weekend so no work will get done. I sure hope it will run as good as it looks.

I just changed the 3.73s in my 68 C10 for 3.08s.

I like the highway gears with a torquey engine.

If you want to cruise pick overdrive or 2.73s or 3.08s

You don't happen to have your old 3.73 gearset do you? If it's good I would love to take it off your hands. Eventually I could see myself swapping in a 700r4 but for right now I am going to go with 3.73s for good low end torque and still able to cruise 70.

Still have and its in great shape. It's also attached to a factory posi.

Before I decide to sell i need to check another truck I have and see what gears it has. So I don't sell something ill end up buying anyhow.

What time frame you on. Im due to check my other trucks gears here in next few weeks.
I do have some new 4.10s

Oh man I would love to have that 3.73 posi. Your other truck doesn't need it!! Seriously though let me know what you would want for it. And is the 4.10 attached to posi or anything? What's the deal with it. For the right price i would go 4.10.

Its Richmond gear set. I put in a truck for a weekend and the ratio didn't work for what I was doing. So they came out. Very low miles
