Hello everyone! Perhaps I am jumping the gun here...but who cares! Tomorrow I will be picking up a 72 K5 CST. The cool part about this 1st gen is it has been in the hands of the same man for 42 years! No modifications except a missing rear bench and I am assuming the ugly front push bar. Aside from the rust and bee nests I am very excited about this.

It has been a long time since I have been in the garage for such a project, but I figured it was "about time" :woot: I got back to it. In fact I have been eying up this 72 for a little over 3 years. The old man who had it didn't want to sell it. I stayed in touch with the old man over the years and unfortunately he passed away around labor day. I stopped by the house when I saw one of his daughters outside to offer my condolences. She asked how I knew her father, I said it all started with the K5. She said would you still be interested? I said yes. We agreed on a price and here we are!

As I can tell by snooping around some of these build threads, a lot can change throughout the builds. But I have some ideas where I will be headed:

1.)Obviously a complete frame off body restoration.
2.)Repower with a ZZ454 Block with the holley terminator EFI mated to a TH400. Transfer case is debatable for now.
3.) Mild lift for now. This is not going to be a major off roader/rock crawler. 4"-6" 35's-37's can assure you this will see the road more than anything. It will be more of a beach vessel taking me to the state park to go fishing. In NJ we have a state park where we can drive on the beach.
4.)Interior I want to bring it back to 72 with modern amenities.
5.)I would also like a soft top of some sort.
I am sure there will be much more things to touch base on over the next few years but this is it in a nutshell.

Look forward to sharing with you all!

Bill

Here are the 2 pics I have of it sitting in the driveway. Think it has been sitting for 5-10 Years.

NICE!

Welcome aboard.....and welcome to the 1st Gen insanity!! :yikes:

Gotta love that ochre color.... mine was the same color in '72. I've never seen a breakdown of production numbers by body color, but it sure seems like ochre was a popular choice back then.

I know you've been spending HOURS reading the build threads lately, but let me give you a bit of advice before the "might as wells" take hold.... clean it up and getting it running well and deal with any safety or reliability issues first.

Do you have a garage to park it in? Good. Pull that damn hardtop off, vacuum out the interior (FIRST!).... and then take it for a relaxing drive on a sunny day. That will "set the hook" on your love affair with this truck forever. There is no feeling quite like driving a full-convertible truck on a nice day... you will feel like you're in a parade. :D

As tempting as it might be to blow the whole truck apart right away, be advised that it's a slow, painful and expensive process. A lot of the "mods" you want to do can be accomplished in phases so that you can keep the truck operational during the process..... and it will be easier on your wallet to eat the elephant in smaller bites.

Perfect example: Lift & Tires - Your 40-year old suspension bushings are toast anyway....so adding the lift will probably make the truck drive a lot better. Fresh tires will too. With a modest lift you probably won't have to even have your driveshafts modified.

Body mounts are probably another good early project to tackle. The body will sit a lot straighter with a fresh set of OEM-rubber style body mounts. You can take that opportunity to install a 1" or 2" body lift. You're going to need that later on for the BBC installation. :wink1:

Take your time, and enjoy the truck for a while.... make a few small changes to improve things as you go. And keep a tight hold of your wallet.....it's going to be a wild ride. :)

Thanks Greg!

Yea I know how the wallet gets beat up! I didn't go nearly as far with my 87 as I want to with the 72 and I sunk a 15-20k into it over the 4-5 years I had it. So I know I will blow that away here. Shhhhh....don't tell the wife!

I love the idea of working on it in pieces, but I want to get into the nitty gritty right away. Our life is quite hectic with my business, my wife in medical school, boats, dogs, football.....so since I have a dedicated garage for it....that's where it will go. In between the last K5 and this one I repowered, rebuilt, and rewired a 23 foot speed boat, sold that and upgraded a 34 foot cruiser boat. I love having this stuff to do. Going to the garage and zoning out with the K5 will be my release. This weekend will be all about getting it into the garage getting it staged and maybe take the top off. Over the next 2 weeks I want to start disassembling it.

Tell me I am crazy Greg, but I already know that. I am just happy that I got my hands on this gem of a gen 1. I can (I did mean can)wait to drive her more than down the block and on my trailer!

I do appreciate the advice! Hopefully more will come!

Rock on... Welcome to the club. :waytogo:

What Greg just wrote up above, should damn near be a 1st gen sticky. :pimp:

Get her cleaned up and safe. Take the top off and drive, drive, drive. :waytogo:

Remember, if you do blow it apart and the "might as well" bug bites ya, those memories will be some of the only things that push it back out of the garage years later finished.

And post pics, we like pics....:D

Thanks z71!! It really will keep me out of trouble! haha

Have some more for you soon!

Thanks Mike!

Again What if I just blow it up right away!?

Im pretty convinced that's what I want to do......

Hey it will be entertaining for all of you!!

All the more reason to work it in manageable chunks.

If the first thing you do is pull the body off, you're basically committed to a year's-long restoration project with no actual enjoyment of the truck to keep you motivated. :doah:

You've got some great opportunities to restore this thing in phases.

The lift is a great example. You end up pulling off the crusty springs, bushings, axles, etc. Any you can take that opportunity to have the new springs powdercoated or whatever you want...install those with fresh bushings and hardware....DONE! You've got that part of the job finished forever. Since you are going with larger tires, you'll need to regear the axles. Personally, I wouldn't bother with 1-Tons given your intended usage and tire size. Maybe some chromo shafts and a few select upgrades (like crossover steering). Here's your chance to strip those axles of 40 years of oil and crud....replace the worn seals /bearings and give them a fresh coat of paint or powdercoat..... re-install as part of the lift upgrade and it's DONE FOREVER!!!

Sure, eventually you'll want to fully strip and clean the frame too but if you do these other items incrementally the costs will be spread out more evenly, and more importantly....when you pull the tub off, you will have significantly reduced the "down time" involved before you can put it all back together.

I will give you another HUGE hint: If you can find a local shop that does high-temperature/low pressure steam cleaning, bring the truck there for a complete front-to-back degreasing..... you will save yourself HOURS of scrubbing and probably $1000 in solvents and blue mechanics towels!!! :haha: It's a lot more fun to work on a clean truck anyway.

Right on bro! Welcome to the club. It looks like you've decided to tear it apart right away so at least keep the pictures flowing. :)

Good idea on the degreasing cleaning thing....I like it:thumb:

I will contemplate your advise on not ripping it apart. I am quite insane though....so I wont loose motivation. The only negative thing will be my wife not liking the constant draining of my account!

Don't judge me to badly if I just tear it apart!!!!:D

Supposed to be picking up the bad boy tomorrow! My wife locked herself in the other room cause im driving her crazy! As long as the wonderful lady drives up from Maryland to take care of business ill be in good shape! Ill attempt to get some fresh fuel in and run it so I can drive it in my dump/machine trailer and transport it to the workshop!

So for now, I needed a little more than wyerbacher pumpkin or sam October, and switched to super dirty vodka martini's. After all, I don't have to go to work in the am, I am driving 70 miles to pick up a new toy!

No worries there! Most of my friends are drunks...I look like a rookie compared to them! Someone needs to come up with an emoticon with a drink in hand for those rare moments we sit back and take it all in!

Wish me luck with the acceptance tomorrow!

My Father is coming with, my little bro will hopefully be getting a half day at work since hes already beyond 45hrs this week...time for some male family bonding!

Love first gens!!! I am not much of a liquor guy, unless its whiskey, scotch, or bourbon. I plan on ending my 3 weeks of sobriety this weekend, was hitting the manhattans a little too hard. I told my wife I will only have a drink when football is on :)

Man has to know his limitations!

Happy to hopefully be part of the 1st gen club this afternoon!

Its mine!!!! I am officially a Gen 1 owner! Found the title, which was crazy since he was the first owner! :woot:

As you can tell, it just squeezed in my dump trailer! It ran on about 4 cylinders, and I blew out the exhaust...but it ran. Now time to start disassembling! The body lines are so straight I don't want to do anything but park it and get into it.

I am ready! :D

Congrats!

Take lots of photos..... And I don't mean just the far away shots either.

When you buy a time capsule like that, you've got a chance to take photos of all the little details for the rest of us who are trying to figure out how to get these trucks back together.

Snapping photos of the things you intend to take apart can sometimes be a life saver when it comes time to reassemble it. I have never regretted taking thousands of photos of my build, but I still occasionally wish that I'd taken even MORE when I forget how a part was installed or located.

MOAR PICS!!!
