'72 K5 - AJ's Gray Matter Build

Thanks guys. Super stoked. The punchdown list is getting shorter to being driveable.

Already?

Man, you work quickly...... :D

GRATS man. :waytogo:

That's funny Greg. I didn't think anything about this build was done quickly

3/7/15: Daylight....and a new leak - Today's goal was to get the truck out of the garage under it's own power. Squared away more of the wiring, rechecked the fluids. Fired it up and pulled it out into the driveway.

Power steering was super tight, almost non-existent. Put the front end up on jacks to bleed it and couldn't move the dang steering wheel. Leaned on it fairly hard and something in the column let go. Presumably the u-joint for the tilt. Figured out that I had the pump lines crossed just in time for a seam on the pump reservoir to let go. Two steps backwards. :doah:

Bummer on getting the lines crossed but pulling it outside under its own power is another huge step. Keep it coming!

Sounds awesome! Congrats!

You'll get all the little stuff worked out in short order. Keep at it.

4/12/15 - Working the punch list.

Finished up running 90 some odd feet of wire sleeving. Picked up a whole mess of braided sleeving from wirecare.com. Good stuff. Kinda hard to see in pics against the black firewall, so I haven't been posting any pics.

While covering the wires, I got distracted and decided I wanted some new valve covers. They're a shade taller and much cooler looking.... at least I think so. And apparently M/T covers are a 1st Gen BBC thing too. The important thing here, is that they stopped the oil leak from the driver's side cover.

From there, buttoned up the driveline brake. Yep, a 1st Gen with a fully functioning ebrake. You'll notice the push-pull cable in the previous pic

Still using the factory pedal

Next up is to button up bolting in this guy. Freshly rebuilt factory truck tilt.

So, here's the remaining punch list....
Finish up the column
Put in a new TV cable
Finish up the console
Adjust rear brake bias
Front end alignment
Exhaust and fill frame holes around the front shock mounts (sounds odd to be together, but my friend who does all my welding is building my exhaust)
Install front shocks
Big smokey burnout

awesome, awesome, awesome.... me likey neat wiring...

e-brake pics saved! need to do it in Mutt before next fall...

does it actuate like I've heard others say? kinda nothing, than all of a sudden quickly engaged?

Looks great AJ!

When you back for "fine tuning" items you should probably throw a small bronze insert onto the pedal side of that ebrake setup. Looks like the current clevis is slightly undersized.

Subscribed for the big smoky! :waytogo:

Thanks guys. Not crazy about how the driver side firewall wire sleeving came out. Lots of wires going different directions to the engine bay and rear of the truck from there. Need to figure out how to clean that part up at some point.

Pretty much Paul. I get about 4-5 clicks of the pedal max. I assume the pads at the rotor need to burn off a bit as their pretty snug to the caliper to begin with.

Great idea Greg.

looks pretty clean to me. Good work. I really like the look of the wire loom stuff you used over the standard plastic stuff.

thanks... update us down the road on how well it holds/works... I have a HAD kit for mine, just need to do a cable bracket gig.. gonna wait and twin-stick the 205 than too..

as long as it works, I'm ok with it... but I like to think there could be a way to do a not completely insane, "cam over center" type lever system down off the caliper arm to make it more like factory in it's gradualness.. eh, if I get adventurous...

4/26/15 - Throwin it down for MPS

Finished up the column, console, and TV cable. Took it out for a little spin. Needed some fuel for what was next...
IMG_1991_zpsx8qjf3tv.jpg

Opened up the motor a few times in a parking lot next to my neighborhood. I mean, who doesn't like a first Gen burnout??

May need to find somewhere else to do these while dialing in the motor. As I was driving back thru the neighborhood, there were a few people standing out in their front yards to see what all the noise was. :dunno:

Need to dial in the AFR and the timing. Was running a bit rough. Then its off for an alignment.

:) I still see another 5500 RPM available on that tach...

Even with two rev limiters...MSD on the coil side and FAST on the fuel, I was still nervous.

On a side note... Got a new oil leak where the oil pan and timing cover meet. Think those two bolts may be too short due to the one piece gasket.

Very nice.
Its always a great feeling when you get finally drive it after all that work

You snuck by on the MPS, good job dude! I will take 3rd place after 2 first gens any day.

What a accomplishment!
