I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to PAGE 4.... :saweet:

Thank you all for the kind words. If you agree to keep reading, I'll keep writing and posting photos. :deal:

...indeed, if I wasn't doing "real" work right now I'd also be out in the shop having fun.

Greg, I want to thank you for all of the documentation you have provided in this thread. Much of the sheetmetal replacement that you have done, I will be doing on my '74. Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences with us!!

Yeah, thanks Greg. I had to subscribe to this because there is so much cool info. I am impressed with the level you are taking this to.

Uh, the heater still has all the bins on it?

In the words of Austin Powers "Goldmember"....

"I know....isn't zat veeeeird?" :D

I moved them tonight, but I actually DO need to build some more shelving on the other side of the shop too.

OK that does it. Now I am pissed because I am so jealous.

J/K :waytogo:

I'd post pics of my garage, but I don't want to make anybody throw up and I don't need your pity. :D

*Edit* BTW, extra points for the CARS and CK5 calendars.

You know one thing I'm curious about with all that welding and grinding you have been doing, how do you keep the floor so clean? I usually drag my welder and grinder out on the driveway and then have to sweep everything up out there which is a pain. Any fancy vacuum system setups?

After the trip to Blazerbash and your comment on starting the cage, I'm curious if you have anything extra cool planned for that.

Driving up on hells revenge with a convertible, two-point seat belts, no cage, and my kid in the back made me pretty nervous. The softtop on the highway is also way too noisy to even talk. I would have rather driven with my hardtop.

I'm looking into ways to build a cage that bolts on like a hardtop, but has removable skins that look stock but could be removed to allow wheeling "topless" and still have the protection of the underlying cage.

Most of the cages I've seen will fit under the stock hardtop, but I think one that replaces it might make it easier to keep things quiet on the drive to the trails, and also be easy enough to remove the skins for the open air fun. You seem to have built a few so I'm curious what you have planned.

One thing that helps a lot is working from a welding table...

In the good 'ol days I would do all my fabrication right on the concrete floor, and the welding spatter and molten metal spray from the plasma cutter would leave marks everywhere. Believe it or not, working only a few feet off the ground allows all the debris to cool enough that when it hits the floor it won't stick and burn itself in like before.

Don't get me wrong, I spend LOTS of quality time with my Shop-Vac and I seem to be buying replacement filters for it all the time.... so it's not like I have some kind of "magic workshop" where it is always picture perfect like you see when I snap the photos to post here. :wink1:

As I've said before, the "process" of working on the truck is at least as enjoyable as the actual finished product I hope to have someday. So I spend a great deal of time trying to improve the environment that I'm working in. To those that get are discouraged by a limited shop space, I'd suggest taking another look at the "BEFORE" shots of this workshop located here:

http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=219868

....it was a cold, dark and cluttered space. Over the past year, it has evolved into something nicer as time (and money) permits. So much of my pleasure in this hobby comes from the "shop time" and I firmly believe that the quality of my work is a result of the environment I work in.... and the shop will continue to evolve and improve, just as the K5 is improving.

As for the cage questions (Brian)...you'll have to stay tuned in the coming months. Cagework is rapidly approaching and I'm sure you'll see things that you will want to adapt to your own build. :deal: It's funny how the trips to Moab can really highlight was is good (and not so good) about a vehicle. Each time I go there, I keep a written list of things that bugged me about my truck. Even in 2006 when I rented that J**p Rubicon, I took lots of notes about what it did well to make sure that my own truck would be at LEAST that good when it showed up next time.

I take it that screw jack (circled in red) supports the support beam you’ve cut so you could put your top in rafters.

Sort of...

There's a lot of weight in the area above the garage with all the extra parts up there.

That screw jack was installed a long time ago, but I'm sure it's working overtime these days.....

:(
It's been a week and half... Somebody needs to go check on Greg!

I'm here....like most of you these days, I'm watching my 401K disappear and wondering how safe my job "really" is.

It probably wouldn't be a bad time to think about an All-Chevy Yard sale. There is an awful lot of stuff that could be cleared out to make more room, and put a little cash into the build fund:

  • TH400 - 0 mile, Lots of beefy upgrades
  • T56 6-Speed (From 2001 Viper GTS, 800 miles)
  • D60 Front with ORD Hi-Steer and X-Over, 4.10s Open diff
  • 14BFF Rear with Detroit and Disc Brakes, ORU diff cover and 4.10s
  • Alcan custom 4" Front Springs, with ORD HD shackles
  • ORD rear Shackle Flip w/Greaseable bushings
  • (Qty 5) Used 38" TSL Swampers on double-beadlocked wheels
  • (Qty 4) !NEW! Hummer H1 non-recentered wheels with PVC beadlocks
  • Jethro-bilt 14BFF Diff cover - !NEW! Never installed
Maybe I should spend some time getting this stuff photographed and posted in the FOR SALE area before the snow flies?
