Snuck out to the garage and built two custom frame rails to splice on to custom frame.

:bow::bow::bow: Awesome work as always and looks like this will take care of the clearance issues with the struts.

What were the plans for the gas tank?

Wide. Long. Shallow.....


Custom-built with the new TIG out of either stainless or aluminum. As wide as the framerails (following the new frame profile) and probably close to 40" deep (over the top of the axle toward the xfercase)

Ideally, flush with the bottom of the framerails but I don't think I'll get enough capacity that way. So I'll add depth until I hit around 30 - 35 gallons..... Should only stick down from the framerails by a few inches, and certainly MUCH more tucked away than a stock tank.

That's the thought process, anyway...

I was having a lot of problems initially because I was trying to use some of the "advanced" pulse TIG settings for frequency and amperage. Once I stopped trying to be so tricky and just turned those options off, things got a lot better. :)

I've got a bit of a mismatched setup while I wait for my 3/32" tungstens to arrive. I've been using a 1/16" tungsten (2% lanthanated) with a 3/32" filler rod.... 100% Argon set at about 20cfm.

The last photo was welding 1/8" tube at around 160A... Which is why it looks "undercut"... I was playing around with different amperages and trying to figure out how to set the machine so that I could modulate with the pedal.

Anyway... If anyone wants to throw out a few scraps of advice on setup or technique, I'm all ears!!!

One tip......clean, clean, clean.......then clean some more......TIG don't like any contaminants in or around the weld area.
 
I would say not bad only cause it's on par with my mig welding. I give it a couple weeks and you will have it down.

It's definitely frustrating... I'm used to being able to knock stuff out pretty easily in the shop. Learning a new skill like TIG takes a lot of coordination and patience. Foot pedal....torch hand positioning and being able to smoothly feed in wire simultaneously is tough. I probably shouldn't be using round tubing for practice.... I'm moving out-of-position almost instantly, so it's just one more variable to manage at the same time. :doah:

You sure know how to hurt a guy. Let's hope you make a New Years resolution to be nicer in 2015! :D

One issue I see newby TIG welders have is, not grinding the tip with a clean grinding wheel. And I don't remember what the wheel is called, but it is white.
