Should watch them get made while in a MILL and not a lathe. :thumb:

The shop has EDM machines too.... There are all sorts of more expensive ways to make these parts! :D

Welcome to Page 44

That Do-All saw is what I spent about 5 years using. Great saw for it's size!

When do you go back to the machine shop Greg?

When I first saw a picture of that lathe, I thought, WTF? That thing has manual tailstock. Then I saw the quick change holder. Oh! That must be a tool room lathe. I'm used to production lathes with a turret that mounts 12 tools.

Should be going back some night this week. If not, I still have plenty of other rear frame work to do at home! :waytogo:

Ok, I think 3 weeks is plenty long enough to have us some form of update on this thread. It's about time us CK5 brothers get after Greg to make things happen at a much faster pace otherwise he'll never be ready for Moab 2018. :D

A thread resurrection on Easter?

How appropriate! :)

2015.04.15 - UPDATE! - ANOTHER SNOW DAY...!!!!

Wow... No matter how hard I try to shake the winter blues this year, mother nature keeps putting the smack down. Freezing rain and snow fell last night but I was determined not to quit.

I went out in the garage and fired up the heater and made a small amount of "symbolic progress"... and it made me feel better.

Step 1: Clean the space...

It's been a long break since mid-January, and the shop was a mess with boxes, sloppy snow and salt piles and everything just getting left all over the place. I spent a couple of hours just getting into that "zen space" of carefully cleaning and putting tools away properly and removing all non-essential items out of my workspace.

Even the workbench got cleaned off!

The rear back-half project was just about finished up after Christmas, but there were still a few vertical fish-plates that had never been fit-up and welded, so I decided to just knock that one out first.

IMG_3990_1.jpg

....as you can see, I'm still standing in a few random water puddles from the crummy weather, but this is the overall "scene" I was performing in last night! :D

Got the frames done, and now I can start getting them into final position on the truck and burn them in on both sides. From there I can reinstall the rear axle and links and get back to the ORIGINAL project..... which was fitting up the rear ORIs and trying to get 16" of travel without hitting the frame!! :doah::haha:

BONUS MATERIAL:

My buddy invited me back to his machine shop last week to play with the lathe again, and we started to work on the outrigger pieces that will ultimately "seat" into those tapered slugs I've shown you before.

Here's how it is starting to look...

And assembled:

Lather......Rinse......Repeat........ 9 more times and we'll be done! :waytogo:

Just to set the record straight, the weather forecast for this weekend is supposed to be EPIC.... sunny and mid-60s on both Saturday and Sunday. I've already campaigned (successfully I might add!) to work on "Honey Do's" on Saturday in exchange for a full-day in the workshop on Sunday!!!

It's been a LONG time since I've been able to roll-up both garage doors and enjoy the sunshine while I work.... the positive psychological effect this will have on my motivation can not be overstated. I am REALLY looking forward to it.

It really is amazing how much this can effect working out in a garage. Its looking like a nice weekend here too! Looking forward to future spring updates.

:hack::grind::weld:

Nice. Since I am gonna be working in a garage smaller than I am used to I have started looking at your shop in the pics as much as the truck :D

Good ideas everywhere.

Thanks Eric,

My best advice (as someone who did it backwards)......build your storage shelves FIRST!!!.....then move the trucks in and disassemble them. :doah:

Tripping over parts to install much-needed shelving is NOT the way to go.

:D

Hopefully mine will just be reassembly  with very minor disassembly.

Yah shelves shelves shelves. Was gonna have plenty of cash to do em but you know how closing costs are up up and away!

Just being in the garage is nice in itself. I finally just got mine back into a house again with a garage. It's such a good feeling just to know you have a place to get work done again. Good to see any progress from you Greg.

2015.04.12 - UPDATE!!! - DOORS OPEN NOW....GRTW....!!!!!

Yep.

For some reason I was humming that stupid E-40 song all day yesterday.... "Doors open now, doors open now....now gas, brake...DIP! Ghost ride the whip....Ghost ride the whip." :haha:

I guess is was just deliriousness from finally getting to play in the workshop with the doors rolled up. Man what an awesome feeling even if it only got into the mid-60s weatherwise.

No pics, no proof!!

Honestly, it took me a while to get my head back into the build and remember what I wanted to accomplish. But I knew that there was at least ONE thing that definitely needed to happen before much longer....

IMG_4019.jpg

Both of the new rear rails had already been completely finish-welded, so I slid them loosely into place and started figuring out the best way to integrate my rear cross-sill that will support the rear roll cage mounting mounts (C-Pillars).

Unfortunately, there is already a factory "U" shaped cross sill that holds up the back of the bedfloor, and my Ryoken green rear crossmember mount was direcltly below that.... trying to put yet ANOTHER cross piece in that area seemed foolish and wasn't doing much for me besides adding a lot of weight.... so I removed the green one and then starting notching an fitting up a fresh 2" x 3" rail. Here it is from the outside view before being snuck underneath where it actually will live...

IMG_4022.jpg

Of course.... It couldn't actually go where I wanted it because the factory #5 body mounts are in the way. (Bascially they are in a perfect lateral orientation with the rear cage bars as you look at the rear tailgate area). So I decided to deep-six them and just integrate those mounting points into my new cross-sill.

Charlie came out to "help" for a while.... which pretty much gave me a 30 minute rest. I taught him about hydraulics, and he was pretty blown away that by using a floor jack he was strong enough to lift daddy right up off the ground! We did that a bunch of times, and had fun lifting ourselves up and down.

IMG_4030.jpg

After some dinner, a bath and a few books it was time for my helper to get to bed. I went back out to the shop and did the best I could as a "solo" builder! :D

The rear body mounts were figured out, and the frame rails were leveled-out...

IMG_4044.jpg

By the end of the night, I had the rails tight to the cross-sill and everything leveled out.

More tonight!
