Wow that's cool I suppose.

Cool because it's an opportunity to buy a place with a big shop. Of course I bet the honey dos are gonna go way up.

Cool cause that's closer. Uncool cause BB 2018 that still the goal. Moving gonna make that hard. It will take a month just to get the new place workable.

The company is going through a reorganization and the types of accounts I am currently working with aren't really going to play much of a role in the future. There is a large computer manufacturer in Austin that you might have heard of.... :wink1: and I'll be joining the team that works extensively with them on qualifications, and product launches.

Ultimately, living in such a remote area far from the actual technology centers was never going to be a permanent gig. I'm kind of surprised that I was able to keep it going for close to 12 years.... the new position is going to be awesome.

Not sure if it will be a big house / big shop scenario when we get there. Ideally, I'd like to get into a more closely-packed residential neighborhood with a cul-de-sac so that there is no speeding traffic and Charlie can play in the street out front with his friends. A big shop would probably put me out of those kinds of neighborhoods and away from other kids and familes, and that's not a fair tradeoff.

From what I've seen in the real estate market so far, I can get into a decent sized house in a family-type neighborhood with a 3-car garage. That will be a nice upgrade for me, and probably a good compromise that the whole family can benefit from. BB2018 is slipping away at this point.... I hate to have to admit defeat because I've been dreaming about it for at least 5 years now. But the reality of doing a complete cross-country move, starting a new job and getting familiar with a new city while settling my family will monopolize my time for at least the next 6 months. Ideally, I'd like to get the garage space prepped, wired and painted BEFORE the "Might As Well" truck arrives for delivery from NH..... so at least it's got a clean and organized place to rest until the initial chaos subsides.

Don't put out the country neighborhoods. The road we live on is 55 mph. Everyone slows down for kids, my kids ride their bikes a mile usually to go to friends houses, we do have a nice quiet dead end street the kids play on though.

But yah neighborhood is important
 
NH to TX - you'll be in for a bit of a culture shock. Austin is a bit different from the rest of Texas, but nothing at all like where you are now. Good luck with the move, we're moving in the next year or so and I am not looking forward to it... it's a lot of work
 
Shoot moving is easy. Now packing and unpacking those bring the suck.

Unless my Mom is helping LOL, it's flat out amazing. Boxes get unpacked literally as they come in.

The news seemed to come out of nowhere, but it became official yesterday.

I found out that I'm no longer going to be "that obsessive-compulsive guy building a 1st Gen in some remote part of NH".

My management just informed me that it's time to pack up my family, my life, and all of my personal belongings (including the Blazer project) and move them to Austin, TX!! :yikes:



I was in shock, and I suppose that I still am.... there is SO much to figure out, and so much work that I need to do to get prepared for the 1900-mile journey.

The good news is that I'm about to find out who all the Texas-based CK5'ers are!!! :waytogo:

I'm sure there are plenty of people here who have connections for things like realtors, contractors, movers, landscapers, etc. or just suggestions for great places to eat or fun family-focused activities that we can check out once we arrive.

My company hasn't provided many specifics yet, but it sounds like I will need to be completely relocated by the end of the summer. In the short-term there will be packing and getting the house ready to put on the market for sale. Realistically, the K5 stuff is going to take a back-seat to the other priorities...but at some point I will need to figure out how to get it assembled "enough" that it can make the trip either in an enclosed car hauler, or maybe just in pieces inside of a U-Haul as "car parts"..... :)

I don't know where all you've lived before, but having all of that is totally doable. Lot sizes out West are way bigger than back East, or in big cities in Cali. In fact, I am working on building exactly what you are talking about now (but in Utah). We will be at the end of a dead end street in a small neighborhood, next to a large park, but on a 1/2 acre lot big enough for a nice sized shop. Cul-de-sac lots with 1/3 acre are not uncommon at all.

Tell your realtor what you want. I'd bet you can have it all if he/she knows what to look for.

I'm well beyond the years when my mom would help with anything, however, my mom is an unrepentant gossip - so letting her unpack my boxes would be a gift that kept on giving for her. Not so much for me.

And remember you're going to Texas... a huge shop in Texas starts at 100,000 square feet. Tell them "small house and small shop" and you'll end up with a 5000 square foot house and a 10,000 square foot shop.... though you may have to rethink your tire size on the Blazer. 54s are cute, there.

I've been to Texas once in late May. So damn humid I had a shower and never bothered to towel off, there was no point.

Texas people are super cool though, wicked cool! I'd live there in a heartbeat, humidity be damned!
 
I agree. They'll fit in just fine - "we got here as quick as we could" style.

He'll tell the ladder story, neighbors will appreciate how the rug(s) really tie the shop together, and Blanchette MAWtorsports will soon be on the Lonestar Round Up shop tour...rules be damned.

Greg - when y'all hit the border, you should be able to use any one of us CK5'er Texans as a character reference.

Is Austin that bad? I know Houston is terrible, spent two weeks in weather like you describe.
