2017.08.05 - UPDATE!! - !! BARE METAL BLAZERBASH 2018™

"Why not just get the truck fully assembled in raw form (no paint or fancy interior) and take it to Moab for a "ultimate shakedown" to find out if the suspension and drivetrain really work as expected?"

The more I considered this, the more it made sense. I'm basically going to build the mechanical aspects of the truck to almost 100% anyway so that I can cycle the suspension and verify that the fenders and tires clear properly. I was going to test-fire the engine and let it self-tune and check it for leaks before installing it for the final time between the framerails. So why not put in some extra effort and plumb the brakes and bolt in a drivers seat and actually DRIVE it as an ultimate test before fully blowing it apart for final bodywork, paint, plating and chrome?? :deal:

agreed, I was in the same boat...so quickly threw the green zinc rattle can job on it, and went to Moab, been like that for 6 years now!

Zim,

So the real question is..... did you discover issues with suspension, tire clearance or other "bugs" since that first trip that would have been problematic if the truck had been fully painted and "finished". (Though we all know there is no such word as finished in the CK5 world). :)

I would think that the first time you had to put a cutoff wheel or plasma cutter to the body or frame to resolve a newly discovered issue you'd be like: "Man, this would have been a heartbreaker if this was fresh paint instead of RyokenGreen"

:waytogo:

mostly made some cage changes since the inaugural run, but I know I want to change a few things before actual paint is hosed on. The best part of the truck is the frame and that was finish painted before assembly and I did change the rear where the fuel tank is mounted. A rattle can blend touched it up and you can't tell because it's dirty anyway!

I know my FJ40 looks done, but it's the second-to-last-done. It's my 8th '40, and you'd think by now I'd know exactly what I want.... and you'd be wrong. When I painted and did the work I made serious effort (and mostly succeeded) to not have to change the hard things. Eventually, I came around to the idea that someday it'll be a show truck, but right now it's a really nice, magazine-shot, 4x4 rig with plenty of blown-in paint and several places where I need to blow in more paint.... if you wheel it, you'll be fixing it. I love the detail work, but I also really appreciate that you're willing to get it done enough for the 2018 date. It'll make it a better rig in the long run.

2017.09.26 - UPDATE!! - 30 DAYS TO TEXAS... !!!

It's been a looooong time since an update. Sorry about that, but anyone who has planned a major job change, sold a house, planned a cross-country move and bought a new house (all at the same time) would probably understand that it's an all-consuming festival of stress, sleeplessness and aggravation. :)

For starters.... the NH house is SOLD! We put it on the market and got an offer in about 12 days. That was a huge relief, since around here houses can easily sit on the market for between 3 - 6 months.... and the thought of having buyers walking through on an almost daily basis get old really fast.

We've been looking for a house in N. Austin for several months now, so we knew what kinds of things we wanted and what we liked.... we got lucky and found a house in our target neighborhood with plenty of space, a swimming pool out back and a 3-car garage!!! Put the offer in last Friday, did a quick back-and-forth negotiation with the seller and got it under contract!! :saweet:

I could show you the house and yard, but I know that the only thing you guys care about is the garage so here it is:

672 Sq Ft of dreamy potential!!!! :haha:

It needs better lighting, 220V electrical outlets, insulated garage doors and HVAC (if I expect to ever work in there in the summer). The garage doors face south, so it will really soak up the heat during the summer months. I'm a bit annoyed that the water softener was plunked right in the middle of the most useful wall.... where I'd likely put the toolbox and workbenches, but I don't think it would cost too much to have it relocated to a corner or maybe even inside the laundryroom which is just inside the entry door.

I've already called a local epoxy floor contractor in Austin and got the quote to have the floors done. If I'm ever going to have nice floors put in, NOW is the time to do it....before the whole place gets loaded up with vehicles, packing boxes and everything else that will be offloaded from the moving truck when it arrives. :deal:

Our closing date here in NH is Oct 24th.... and we have to be fully moved-out before then, so I'm not promising that you'll see me on CK5 much between now and then, but I wanted to let you know that I'm still alive and working as hard as ever to get this move completed, so that I can get back to the MAW project and more regular build updates like the good ol' days!!! :waytogo:

Haven't been on here in a while but did get an email notification. Thought I'd check in and see what's going on. Good to hear you're making the move to Austin. Liberal Utopia capital of Texas but beautiful area. I'm in South Texas if there's something you need. I frequent the SA/ Austin area so we could always plan a meet up.

I didn't move across country, I only moved a mile. I didn't have a planned career change. It was a career change due to getting laid off right before another brain surgery. But while still recovering I moved my 3 beedroom house and my garage and shop and had to sell and move two 20' shipping containers. My K5 project, and the cnc mill and on and on and on. If I did it 99% solo, you got this with family & friends helping.

Literally not another person but a couple loads worth helped me. Why it took my 3 1/2 months to move by myself. And No my freakin Lazy kid didn't even help. So if you are healthy, you can handle it. You just have a Much longer drive and far far less trips back and forth. Thank god lol! Just sayin Oh how I feel your pain and stress over it all and the physical part too. Good luck with everything! Just be damn careful and everyone else to. Get everyone moved with no injuries. Thats the most important thing.

WOW!, You really downsized your garage rug!

Looks like it was left behind by the previous owner....hopefully that is one of the items that "conveys" when ownership is transferred!!! :haha:

Congrats. My wife and I really like Georgetown and some other northern cities over there. A little smaller than round rock, but growing fast.
