A long as at least a portion of the garage has nothing above it I see a garage edition in the near future.

Here's the front view of the garage area. I might be able to get up a bit higher on the double-door side with some kind of new truss system... might be more effort/expense than it's worth.
Haven't even seen the house in-person yet.... I plan to head down to Austin in the coming weeks to walk through the whole place with my tape measure and graph paper.

My wife's been looking at houses. I told her I really didn't care what the house is or looks like.
If it doesn't have an adequate shop, or room to build one, NOPE. Lol..
With that roof I bet you can cut out the bottom cross ties of the truss, and put one mid way pretty simply. That should give you verticle room and not mess with the needed strength.

You know, that green stuff in the front of the house could be covered by an adequate-sized shop with a tall enough ceiling....
I was kind of thinking more about a retractable boom-style setup that could come out of the attic vent....!!!
Kind of like what real barns have for loading hay or whatever into the loft. That way I could hoist the cage out as needed.... then hide away the lifting arm when not needed. HOAs would never be the wiser!!!

In our target neighborhood, everything is an HOA.
It's not a real concern for me, I'm one of "those" people who actually likes the idea of an uncluttered neighborhood (no boat trailers, cars under blue tarps or RVs on the street) and front yards that need to be well-maintained.
From what I've researched, you do pretty much whatever you want INSIDE the garage and nobody will dare mess with you (freedom loving Texans and all that!).... as long as the car hobby sprawl doesn't end up on the driveway or yard, there should still be plenty of leeway to do what I enjoy.

And what about that time when you're doing something inside the garage and need to push the truck out for room. Or you want to work with the doors open and the neighbors get their panties in a wad?
No HOA for me... If I lived in one, I probably couldn't have bought a big block burb for Eric!

I suspect it's too late to back out even if he wanted too. If there's a problem after a couple years, he can probably sell it for more than he paid for it and find another. Texas is a fairly large state with plenty of housing.
