73 K20....crossmember time

Got these guys in today. im going to get the b52s and fush stuff on tomorrow. Once i can hang springs ill get the d60 bolted in and prep the frame for boxing.

Are you wanting spider gears, or the whole carrier? I just yanked a set of spiders out of my Blazer axle when I installed my Detroit. I assumed you were going to do the same with whatever locker you wound up running... :dunno.

I really need the open carrier mostly. That way id just mini spool it. If I could find one with the spider gears in it I may just weld it.

Maybe planning on welding?

Martin

Exactly.

Apparently gov bombs can be welded...

So...if you're planning on welding it anyway, why wouldn't you weld up what you already have? :dunno:

(yes, gov-lock carriers can be welded)

Mostly because if I did by chance have a open carrier in my 14, instead of the gov lock id probably just spool it for sake of ease and time.

Looks like I need a lot more mig wire!

Meh. Weld it up. Unless you think you're going to have a use for a gov-lock at some point in the future. :dunno:

This is my favorite technique for welding gears:

Got the holes opened up for the front upper shackle deals. Waiting on paint to dry to bolt them in.

Pulled the 56s off the 2nd gen 14 bolt and got them on the frame, painted em as well.

I moved a bunch of junk around and got my 13 bolt out. I intended on cutting the perches off with the plasma but I bought the wrong damn electrodes. I think im going to just bolt the thing in so I can tear into the rear end.

I also pulled the rest of the fuel lines out. I was hoping to get more done but I did what I could.

If everything goes alright Ill be on tires tomorrow.

I need to figure out the dimension between the centers of the poly motor mounts since I dont have any crossmembers in the front yet. Last thing I want to deal with is putting the motor in and finding out I locked the frame in to narrow or wide for the mounts.

Why would you bolt it in place before tearing into it? Isn't it easier to tear into it on the bench? :dunno:

My bench is covered it junk lol.

The real reason I want it in is because I can beat on it without it going anywhere. The other reason is that I need to get the interior out of the truck and the garage isn't wide enough to get the bench seat out so I need to have it on axles to roll it out. Final reason is I have a bunch of welding to do to the front of the frame and it'll be painful welding down low so if I get her on axles the work will be up higher.

I was really hoping to get new perches on the rear end but I have to wait a bit...I did get the axle under the truck in about 30 minutes today.

How did you get it mounted if the perches didn't line up?

I'm beat. Worked my ass off on this truck today. Rear end went smooth but the front put up a fight. For the life of me I can't understand why passenger spring plate doesn't line up with the center pin of the leaf spring. I know factually I'm on the 1 inch forward setting...same setting as before, which obviously worked. It's off by a mile. Nothing I can't fix tomorrow but damn! The springs are far more arched then the lest set were so I could see the center pin pitching but this is off by 3/8" or so.

The truck is insanely tall. I am at full droop in the front though so maybe I'm judging too quickly without the drive train and the trucks weight on the front. I need to also get rid of the wood skids...they're preventing the shackles from going back, again making the truck stupid tall. I'm 6'3 and the bottom of the window is eye level...kinda cool but not for what I'm doing lol!

The rear looks very close shackle angle wise but it has the trucks weight on it. However there's no bed so it's real light back there.

I can't get far away enough to take a decent picture.

Hopefully I have this on right?

Rear endarrino

Front is gonna have 1000 lbs + on it. That will settle those springs quick. I wouldn't worry

Ok cool! I appreciate all your help!

Im sore as hell. The front is so close to be bolted in. I need to get the right bolts. Damn home depot doesn't carry anything 9/16.

I definitely will need limit straps because it's a mind blowing amount of droop. It's gonna be a bad mofo once the 40s are on!!
