73 k5 blazer restoration-Transmission is in, Time for wiring

You dont need 3 jacks and a cherry picker to get that in there. Take the motorcycle jack and find the center of gravity of your tranny t case and use 2 rachet straps for good measure around it. Then lift it up and into place.

HA! Rough livin huh?
You arent kiddin man, Workin at a tire shop full time is murder for a fat guy like me. Then throw in ths hell and im havin one hell ofa time.

I did try that but i think the cherry picker was restricting it from moving that last 2 inches back. Ill try it again with the cherry picker unattached and i think that might do the trick.

i have installed trans/t-case combos before using all of the methods you are--- just not all at the same time:haha:

sorry. couldnt resist.

loose the picker, strap it down to the jack. that should do it

this ^ trust me i just pulled my trans with only a broken floor jack some blocks of wood and one cheap ratchet strap... it will be a little easier if you seperate the t-case from the trans but since you already have it mounted with a gasket and silicone id just leave it alone. i personally prefer putting the motor in first and then the trans but its up to you on that part. seems like this is gonna be a very frusterating/difficult project for you but stick to it and in the end you will learn a lot and look back and laugh at some of your mistakes.:waytogo:

I didn't actually use the floor jack i just didn't want one of my roommates to knock it over and dent the pan. I did that even with the crossover pipe that the dumbass PO paid a shop to do when they completely welded in the entire exhaust system. It was so tight under the front driveline was riding on the exhaust at ride height when he brought it home...POs...

alrite alrite guys, im gettin to it already jeez a vicious bunch you are :haha:. Got tomorrow (today :doah: ) off work so i may head over to my dads early in the morn (10) and see if i cant get er bolted up. Hopefully she will be a little more merciful this time. Really my only trouble is that the 203 weighs 5 kajillion pounds and is shaped all kinds of akward but i'll see if i cant find this legendary center of gravity you guys speak of on that beheamonth of a transfercase

Right under the gear reduction housing, like I have my jack in the picture. Put the chaincase over the jack instead of the tranny, and you'll be good. Then just put a strap or two around the tranny for good measure

I come bearing good news, The tranny/tc are in place and bolted up to the 2 bolts on the passenger side of the t-case. Heres some pics of how it sits now.

Now onto the problems. I put one bolt through the frame and cross member that the adapter bolts up to and went to do the other side and the crossmember is 1/2 inch towards the driver side. Is it possible the 2 crossmembers are slightly different sizes and i should use the one with the heat shield for this?

Nope, your frame rails are spread in. My 74 is spread apart and it is a pain to put the crossmember in. I have to put bolts in one side, stick a pry bar (or a alignment punch) though the holes on the other side. Pry the holes close, stick a bolt in the open hole after I align the hole between the frame and crossmember. Now, if I take the alignment tool out of the hole, it would shift out place. I have to tighten the bolt while the alignment tool in place. after the bolt is tight, I remove the alignment tool and put in the last bolt.

Good luck

Dont get too far ahead of yourself. You really want to get at least a couple of the bellhousing bolts in bfore doing much else of anything. Usually requires quite a bit of wiggling.

Will do, Appreciate the advice

Well then, Im essentially a tool... I forgot you didnt have a motor in it right now! Oops!

Hopefully ill be able to prove you right soon,Motor is pretty much done.

transmission is bolted in with no jacks under it now ready toi recieve the motor. Turns out the heatshield crossmember had bigger holes in the middle and had to be used as the tranny cross member so a quick crossmember swap was in order. My dad wants to redo the entire engine well wiring harness so ill probably have to wait a few years to get him motivated enough to do that :doah: . Someone else picked up the 90 k5 i was going to wheel/use for parts before i could hear about the loan so looks like im going to have to build up the 76 k5 as my wheeler and ill transplant all of its parts into the buggy. Shame, i was really hoping to return it to its previous use as a chase truck once again but life happens and theres only so many dollars to go around. Thats the current plan anyways :dunno: , It seems to change at least once a week.

you can buy the engine harness complete from painless wiring.then all you have to do is run the wires and they already have the correct hookups.

Sweet thanks for the tip.

Got some motorwork done today. I embarrassingly have to admit that my dads doin all the internal motor work. Hes got quite a few engine rebuilds under his belt so i'll be doing most the work to drop it in but hes puttin it together :o .

Oil pan installed,Double roller timing chain installed with cover all bolted up, and harmonic balancer bolted up. Added some oil into the valley up top and turned the crank a bit to get some oil into the hydraulic lifters. Gonna need some special tool my dads buddy has to get the oil pump shaft installed and spit oil up top or that was his excuse to stop for the day :dunno: . Either way im happy to see it coming together.

The motor looks one hell of alot closer to running now though.

After talking to dad it sounds like whats left is
-getting the valves set up properly
-intake,
-distributor, already bought years ago All MSD stuff
-flex plate and starter, Starter is a ''high performance racing starter'' whatever the hell that means
-Carb, bought years ago as well. We're using a 650cfm edelbrock.

Got some pretty damn cool looking Hooker Headers as well blacked out designed to fit between the frame rails of a k5 since apparently thats a PIA gettin headers in a k5.

Awesome.
The starter is probably high compression.
And x2 on the headers,I just put some in my K5 and it was a b1tch!
Make sure you tighten those headers bolts every couple of weeks though

Yeah it is and will do man. Appreciate your support :thumb:

Well one more notch in the belt and a very exciting one for me at that. Dad got the valves set properly with the cam or something of the like. I wont try to pretend like i know about buildin motors :haha: .

1.So some top end motor work and accessorys
2.Dad wants to keep the wiring harness as is just clean it up a little bit and replace all of the wires involved with actually starting and running the motor so its as reliable as possible. Not going to touch any of the lighting wiring.
3.Finish up our paint work in the engine well
4.Drop that monster in their and let er rip. Well maybe a little more to it than that but you get the idea
5.Fuel system and brakes were completely overhauled just a year or so before its 2nd motor blew up so no worries their besides getting all the old fuel/brake fluid out and a inspection on the brakes for potential issues.

Dad and I are gettin along alot better nowadays. Key to making it all work is making sure i do all the tight dirty hard work. Hes a big ol' fart and gets grumpy in a rush when he gets under the k5 and starts tryin to move around. Too much wear and tear on his body and a santa clause gut to be doin much of that anymore. I on the otherhand spend all day doin this **** at work so another few hours for my passion isnt an issue. So hes my tool guy and director since hes done quite a bit of engine/transmission transplants and rebuilds in his day. When i really get stumped he helps get me past it with his knowledge and experience.

He said he was reading this thread and the 76 k5 build thread last night when i slept over at my cousins house. Said he was real happy to see the dad acknowledged in all this and didnt often realize if he was or not. I talk to him all the time about how rough it is trying to race with no sponsors and bounce ideas off him pretty much daily. Then i realized hes my first sponsor, He pays my cell phone, insurance, registration, part of my schooling along with my mom and all my food and not to mention right now hes all i got for moral support since i dont exactly have a huge network of wannabe racer buddies :haha:, And when your working full time at a very labor intense job and your always broke because your trying to build something that might give you a chance at racing 5 years in the future things can look bleak. If it wasnt for him the 1000 bucks or so i make a month wouldnt go near as far as it does pushing me towards my racing dreams. Shoutout to all the Awesome Dads :waytogo:
