Well I've been debating whether to start a build thread on the forum or just keep on with my build blog that nobody sees...guess which I decided to do?:D

This '73 K5 was my dad's, he bought it for $950 back in '85. It was running and he drove it home. He swapped in a rebuilt 350 in '88, but otherwise left it untouched. It managed to survive the great purge of '89 when he married my mom:haha:, he had so many cars. After that the truck was sidelined unless the DD broke down. It functioned as a weekend hunting rig every once in a while, but mostly stayed parked somewhere.

When I was 14 or 15 my dad and I were talking about the truck, and he told me we could bring it to the house if we got it running. It had been sitting in a pasture for at least 4 years, but with a hot battery and a little gas in the carb she cranked right up and evicted the rats that were living in the exhaust:woot:.

The leaking trans was the first order of business, which after multiple pan swaps we diagnosed that it was a bad front seal. So the TH350 was completely rebuilt w/mild shift kit.

I worked on small things for a while, and a with a new set of rims and tires we were here. Then I finally took the hardtop off:

I then rear-ended someone on the way to school one morning and tweaked the entire passenger side of the front clip, but it was still drivable.

So I just drove it like that for a year or so. Then the t-case was trying to drop into 4-lo while cruising, so it was rebuilt with a new chain and superwinch 2WD conversion kit. Installed Warn Standard Hubs as well.

A little after that I found a '79 2WD Blazer with a solid 350 block and a good front clip.

So I began the teardown of the donor vehicle and had the entire front clip primed and ready to install.

Continued...

The plan for the new engine was to have a reliable, strong motor with a wide powerband and good torque right off idle. Here's what went into it:

  • Comp Xtreme 4x4 cam 12-235-2
  • Flattop pistons w/moly rings
  • Cloyes True Double Roller Timing
  • Edelbrock Performer EPS Intake
  • Edelbrock 600cfm 4bbl Performer Carb
  • MSD Street Fire HEI Distributor
  • Hedman Headers
  • Flex-a-Lite Stainless Steel Flex Fan and Red Anodized Spacer
  • Dorman Harmonic Balancer

shortblocktopview.jpg

However, the heads from the donor engine were both cracked and unusable. This meant I would have to pull the heads off the existing engine to finish the new. However, before I did that I had the bright idea of running my 2 1/2 ton, beast of a 4WD truck in the 1/4 mile at the local drag strip:dunno:. It ran a 17.84 at 75mph, not too bad if you ask me. The bad news was that run created a stress riser that eventually led to a thrown rod:doah:.

So the teardown of the '73 started:

After some trouble with the wrong torque wrench putting on the heads (It was in Inch/lbs:doah:) We finally got it all back together and running, and installed the new front clip.

A Little More...

I had custom exhaust installed, it's 2 1/4" true duals with FloPro MX500 series mufflers and turndowns right before the rear axle.

Some other mods are high back bucket seats out of a fullsize ford van, a grant gt steering wheel, tailgate swap from the '79 (it latches now:D), '79 4-row radiator, 15x8 Black Rockcrawler Steels, and some other assorted small stuff. I have 3 tops: the factory hardtop, a full softtop, and a custom soft top that creates a cab and leaves the bed open. (I'll post pics of the tops eventually)

I plan to do a rocker box delete much like colbystephen's '73, and POR-15 and herculiner the tub. I will also end up trimming out the fenders and fabbing up custom front and rear bumpers. Lots to do...

Hardtop and Rust...

Well here's a few shots of the hardtop. It's in pretty good shape, and I recently repaired the rear corners with some fiberglass. Not too bad for my first time.

The repair isn't pretty, but it's strong, and I'm a firm believer in function over fashion anyways:D.

There are some parts of this truck in pretty good shape, and others that are completely shot. These are the major rust spots I have to deal with:

I plan to cut out the rocker boxes, widen the wheel openings, and lay down new floor board where needed. After new tires go on that will be my next major project, as I want to get rid of the cancer.

BTW, if I need to resize my pictures let me know, I bet they are kinda big, but I'm running 1280x1024 and can't tell.

Good job so far :waytogo: what part of TX are you in? I am just surprised to see that much rust on a truck in TX. Repairing that windsheild frame is going to be a chore but is doable. Hey good luck with it and I cant wait to see how it turns out.:D

A Mini-Update

Well I worked for 2 or 3 hours last night, but I can't get the lights to act right. I never have liked wiring...:angry1:

So I'm probably gonna let my dad take it to a guy he knows that is good with wiring, because at this rate I'll end up frustrated enough to try and fix it with a hammer, though that never seems to work on electrical.

I know that I'll eventually rewire the whole truck, but I just want it to work so I can be driving it again, I've been without it too long.

I have pulled all the bolts in the bed and drilled out the rivets in the windshield frame so we can drop the hardtop on fairly soon. Still need to install my heater fan enclosure thing though...

Other good news is I'm getting new tires with my tax refund, though I haven't decided for sure what kind to get. I want them to be 33x12.50r15, and I have always liked BFG tires, even if they are a little more $$. The truck is a DD, but I want it to be capable if I go offroad (not deep mud, i try to avoid that), should I go with the A/T's like what I have now, or get the new KM2's?

I'd end up spending $100-150 more on the KM2's, would they be worth it?

Well I figured out the lights, most of it was either bad grounds or wrong type bulbs, thanks to all the guys on here who helped me diagnose the problem. There is still a small short in the turn signal switch in the column but nothing catastrophic. I have the hardtop on, so it's back on the road again. I'm really glad to be driving it since it's been out of commission since September. Pics later...

You got allot of work ahead of you. Im doing rust repair just like that I hope you know how to handle a mig welder. But like you said quality over fashion thats my motto. Well good luck I cant wait to see how it comes out. if you wanna check out my build thread so you can see some of the rust repair that i have done and i still have allot more to.

Well I have put the hardtop back on, and it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I have the last bits of weatherstrip and a shifter boot on order so other than the holes in the floorboards I'll have a sealed cabin:D.

PICT0568.jpg

I also started working on the back seat, which surprisingly wasn't in that bad of shape after all these years, just needed a little freshening up.

PICT0563.jpg

PICT0565.jpg

PICT0566.jpg

I'm hoping to get the bucket seats and the back seat upholstered by the same local guy that custom made my soft top.

Should have some new tires next week hopefully, BFG M/T KM2's are what I decided on. I'll need to replace the drivers side front hub before that though, it's still making noise since it's out of round.

I'm slowly getting there, but making some progress.

good work Stevo. I notice a lot of similarities between your buildup and mine. RUST! I'd love to see some pictures of that custom soft top.

It's nice to see you doing all this work with your dad. More dads should do this kind of "project" with their kids. I know my kids will be building their own cars. Give them some practical knowledge and respect for their cars at the same time.:cool1:

RUST! I'd love to see some pictures of that custom soft top.

Yeah there's definitely a lot of that rust stuff:D

I've taken out the snaps on the windshield frame so the hardtop would go back on, but I can layout the soft top and snap some pictures to give you an idea.

Custom Soft Top Pics

Alright here you go brockmub:

The top is 4 pieces, made out of some type of vinyl that is probably the strongest stuff I've ever seen, the snaps are the weak points. It uses snaps to attach from the header to roll bar, and roll bar to bed.

All4Pieces.jpg

The top piece is what I use the most, only downfall is that it doesn't cover all the way out to the top of the windows, and water off the roll bar drips onto the seat or the back of my neck. Works very well considering we just showed up at the shop and told the guy we wanted a black soft top that made a cab...

Top.jpg

The back doesn't have a window, but since I have large side mirrors it's not that bad to drive with. It snaps to the backside of the roll bar and the bed. It has cut outs for the support tubes that come off the back of the roll bar.

Back.jpg

These sides cover the gap between the top, roll bar, and doors. I can drive the truck with them on, but it makes getting in and out of the truck a hassle since they snap to the door in two places. I did not originally ask for these, but my dad instructed the guy to add these on.

Sides.jpg

The stitching is super strong, and so is the fabric. The guy engineered the top so that it would overlap the sides and allow water runoff, it works well. However the top doesn't overlap the back, so water still gets in that way, but not enough to bother me.

SnapandStitchingFront.jpg

SnapandStitchingBack.jpg

Total cost was $400, he's even repaired the snaps for me, no charge. It has worked great for what we needed it for, until I could get the hardtop on. I also have a full soft top that has never been fully installed, don't know if I have all the parts. I am hoping to make a bikini top that will use a jeep-like rail on the windshield frame, run over the roll bar and down at an angle for a foot or so, and then attach to the bed with a couple of straps. A little bit easier to get on and off. Hope this gives you some ideas.

To Do List

Well I'm gonna list out most of the stuff I am trying to get done, both for my benefit and to give you guys an idea what I'm looking at. They will be listed roughly by priority, not a set order though.

  1. Driver's Side Front Hub (Original is out of round, making racket)
  2. Adjust Trans Modulator (Makes 1-2 Shift, but not 2-3)
  3. New Windshield (Birthday Present from Parents)
  4. Cut Fenders (3-4", attempt to retain stock shape)
  5. Rocker Box Delete (Except for innermost body support)
  6. Integrate Sliders (4"x2" .120 wall Tube, 2"x2" .120 wall supports)
  7. Floorboard Repair/Replace (16 gauge sheet)
  8. Repair other various rust (Windshield frame, bed, etc.)
  9. POR-15 specific areas and Herculine entire tub
  10. New Tires (35x12.50r15 BFG KM2's:D, and some type of full size spare)
  11. Modify Drivers Side Tailgate Hinge to bolt up
  12. Seat Belts (Either 3pt stockers or 5pt harnesses)
  13. Paint (Red Body, Black Hardtop)

I hope to get most of this done before April 4th, I say "most" because I just want to be able to drive it to prom without worrying about my tux or my date's dress haha. We'll see how it goes...

Update 2-23-09

Well I tore the doors down yesterday and did the quick release hinge pin mod. Also helps the doors close a whole lot better, especially since the passenger side top hinge was sheered into two pieces, I had to pull the one off the donor truck to replace it.

However the bad news is when I got in the truck to drive somewhere, I turned the key and the sector gear inside the steering column shattered. Not surprising after 35+ years of abuse. So now the column is torn down but I have to decide if I want to order a new gear or go through the hassle of pulling the one off the donor truck. I'll need a steering wheel puller, or have to make one, to get the donor's column torn apart to get to the gear.

Little bit of an update...

Well, the one off my parts truck is different b/c of the tilt column, so I ordered a sector gear from Year One, hopefully it'll be here soon so I can get this thing back on the road...it's sad when shipping costs as much as the part:crazy:

Went by Harbor Freight today and picked up an air cutter ($8:D) and some cut off wheels, so I'm hoping to start chopping out the cancer soon, starting with the fenders and maybe some of the floorboards...

I've also started the disassembly of the doors off my donor truck, I'm hoping to turn them into some half doors until I can get some tube ones from Kert. The passenger side door is completely cleaned out except for the latch/lock mechanisms since I will need to relocate them somewhat. One I start cutting I will probably snap some pics as I build 'em.

Last, but not least, I bolted in the rear seat and slid in my plastic/composite container that'll eventually be some locking storage for tools, etc. (These will be pulled for the metalwork/bedliner, but I'd rather have them in the truck than in the garage)

Half Doors - Planning It Out

So I cleared out a space in the garage to work (sure was a mess...:doah:)

Here's the passenger side door completely empty except for the latch mechanisms:

EmptyDoorFullView.jpg

The bottom is pretty rusted out so i'm gonna need to fab up a patch panel after i finish all the :hack:.

I plan to cut the rod from the inner handle and just relocate it closer to the latch, something like this:

EmptyDoorInnerHandleArrow.jpg

And last but not least, the inner cut line:

CutMark.jpg

The cut isn't set in stone, I may move it up or down, but I like the top front and back to be the same height. I would have started the :hack: tonight, but I don't think the neighbors would have appreciated it, I'll torture them later...

nice build. looks like good times. i just picked up a few more sets of doors to start some 1/2 doors too - so i'll follow your progress for ideas! :)

have you seen what i've done with my rocker boxes on the '73? cut them all out, cut the body up 5" or so, welded in steel tube. instant ground clearance, tire fitment and rust eliminator....

started cutting out the rust:
