'73 - "Malik" 1 Ton K5 Continuation Build

I thought I saw it up for sale?

Martin

Yeah, I did have it up for sale. I was moving from Wyoming to California and I sold my Diesel so I didn't really have a way to get it back home. I was hoping to get a reasonable amount for it and build a similar blazer up that would be more road friendly, but I decided to just keep this thing.

Hey, I remember this. I emailed you about purchasing your 42's only, but you told me no :frown1:....glad to see you keeping it though. I've always like the look and stance of this thing :thumb:

Good, I like this thing.

I was getting the K5 shipped back to California last week and found out there was an accident. My brother called me and said the company was 2 hours late to drop it off at his house. Shortly after that call I received one from the company saying that there was a trailer fire and all 5 cars were lost. :frown1:

Yeah... so that's over now. What's next? :dunno:

You bend that company over and get all you had invested and then some. I had to sue a transport company and the driver personally when they fugged up my wife's 65 2+2 fastback. They didn't want to pay me what it was worth. I ended up having insurance pay us market value and sued the transport company and the driver for an additional 32K after lawyer fees. I put him out of business but I didn't care.

WTF thats lame

I know, I was like WTH... how did that happen???

I hear ya. I've never been through something like this so I don't really know what to expect. I'm waiting for their insurance representative to call me. I've started rounding up all of the receipts and I've made a spreadsheet of all the parts. This was no means a beautiful truck but I'm already at $7k + in parts to build a truck with all of this stuff again. That's not even counting the basic K5. I'm not sure how long it takes to pay out or anything, but bottom line I'm out a trail rig and it's gonna cost $$$ to get one built up again.

That sucks. Do you at least get the carcass???

Martin

I'm friends with a CHP Officer and he knows the guy who responded to the fire. He says there's nothing left. It caught on fire and fell off the top rack. They couldn't even roll it. They had to get a huge forklift out there to get it off the highway. I was hoping the axles at the very least would be ok but he says it's a goner. I would go take a look at it and post some pics for you guys but I'm in Oklahoma for the next 2 months training with the Air Force.

I'm pretty bummed but I was just using this K5 as a parts rig to swap into a 80's Pickup. I was looking for a K30 or maybe something with a 454 so maybe it's a blessing in disguise.

Last shot of the K5 after it was loaded up:

Any tips that can help me get my ducks in a row and get my moneys worth would be appreciated.

I can't imagine there are no useable parts left.

Martin

^This. My brother purchased a Rockwell axle that was in a fire and all he had to do was replace all the seals and some bearings and he is still running it on his trail rig to this day (oh, and some paint :D)

How did it catch on fire up there? Something weird about that to me.

agree, your truck was miles away from anything flammable. So weird. The truck must have been out in the boonies without any close FD. It's hard to imagine it happening. Harder to imagine nothing is left :dunno: :(

Sorry dude. It may be a blessing but you're gunna have to jump through some hurdles to get paid unfortunately.

I don't know the details. The brakes on the trailer started burning and then the cars. There may be more to the story but that's all I know right now.

The report shows some roads that are pretty far out there, but still, there shouldn't be a FD that far away. Like I said, I don't really know how this whole insurance thing works, but I imagine they're not going to pay and let me keep all of the parts even if they are in working order. I still have 2 months left here in OK before I get back to CA so hopefully the ball gets rolling soon.

I just got a new truck lined up yesterday. 84 K30 CUCV.

They HAVE to pay you and give you your vehicle. They just deduct the salvage price if the vehicle from what they pay you, which if it burned up, is probably a couple hundred dollars.

Any CK5 members up there that can take a look at the truck? A bit of a drive for me however I might be going through there in a few weeks to grab some parts in Eureka.

No worries man, my brother lives there I'll ask him to take a look at it when he gets a chance. That would be awesome if the axles were in good shape.

I talked with my brother on FaceTime while he visited the yard. There isn't much left. I told him to give me a close up of the axles and they look ok but the brakes are obviously shot and the hubs are melted. I don't see the point in keeping them except for the gears/spools, but I'm not planning on running either in my new build. The guy who runs the yard says he wants the parts so I think I might just sell the whole thing to him.

I only have one picture, but my brother said he would send me some more when he gets off work.
