Been a while

Well,

It's been a while since I have done any work on the Blazer due to issues with my back. Over the last 10 months I've done a little work to it but not much. I think I'm finally getting healthy enough to work on it although I'm still not totally pain free.

The things I remember working on are these:

1. Had a tick in the motor. I drove it to work one day and it started ticking like crazy, well If the engine was going, I didn't want to pay for the tow bill so I thought I'd see if I could make it home. It was loud as hell and once it kept running I decided it was an exhaust leak. I replaced the driver's side header gasket. Slight tic and it blew a hole through the gasket on at cylinder #8 about 20 minutes later.

I replaced the gasket again (I should have bought the metal ones) still has a slight tick. Found a small hole in the header at cylinder #2. Crap, thought the headers were good, now I have to replace them too $$. Patched the header with some kind of high temp metal stuff for a temporary fix. It made the sound go away in the front but there was still a tick. Valve?

2. Thought the tick might be a valve out of adjustment or a stuck lifter from when the engine over headed previously. Took off the valve cover and adjusted the valves but could still hear the tick on cylinder 2 or 4. If I tightened up the lifter, the sound would go away but come back. Ran some Marvel Mystery oil for about a two hours worth of run time but it didn't stop the tick.

I tore off the radiator hose, carb and intake manifold and replaced the 2 lifters, adding molly lube to hopefully fix the problem, not ideal but an inexpensive fix. There wasn't much wear on the lifters but I couldn't compress one of them. There was also some carbon build up in the cylinders but not too bad so the engine had likely been rebuilt about 30,000 miles ago like the owner said or it was just a clean original engine. I sprayed some stuff in their to clean what I could. I also notice some of the rocker arms didn't match so it could have been a low budget rebuild if in fact it was rebuilt.:doah: All the rocker studs were pinned but one seemed slightly higher than the others. Pin was still in it but poking out a little. I tried to get it back in but couldn't.

Anyway, put it all back together with new intake gasket and fired it up. No tick and it all sounded fine but all of the sudden the oil started coming out like chocolate milk. The intake gasket was leaking. I pulled everything back off, re-lubed the lifters, cleaned what I could out of the valley and replaced the intake gasket. Drained the oil, poured some additional quarts through the motor, filled oil, started (15 seconds), drained the oil again, filled oil, started, drained again, filled oil, started, drained again, finally it was clear. Ran it for about 20 minutes + (? - basically a cam break in procedure due to the new lifters, drained the oil, looked good, filled it and restarted. Slight tick but I think it's an exhaust leak at cylinder #8 again. At least I painted the motor again so it's all pretty. :haha:

3. Maybe about 3 months ago I pulled out the seats and ground down all the rust spots in the bed. The bed looks pretty good but there are a few spots near the tailgate that need to be patched. The previous over patched about 8 inches on each side by the tail pan but didn't weld them completely so moister got in and rusted some areas. I still need to remove the carpet and mat. The PO upgraded to a seat from 87-89 and mounted it through the bed. The brackets he built for it are still mounted to the bed.

4. About 2 months ago I was tired of sitting around and cut out some of the rust in the driver and passenger floors. They didn't look to bad to begin with but once I got out the hammer the floor just completely disintegrated at the outer seat belt mounts. Will need to do some serious patching there.

The rest of the floor didn't look too bad but had some rust under the footwells so I cut that out and up along the side. Guess what. No inner rocker panels. :( On either side!!!! :D Dang it, the outer rocker panels are good but it looks like I'll be taking those off to fix some idiots mistake although I will need to replace the cab support on both sides so I guess it would have happened anyway.

Oh, I also found a birds's nest under the passenger floor. Thought it was from mice but I found a bunch of feathers in it.

Anyway, that's where I'm at for now. Will update with pics when I get a chance.

Trying to keep the dream alive.

Just read through everything I'm glad your getting better, keep up the good work! I'm looking forward to seeing more pictures and it being finished
