'76 k5 mid life crisis

just did a little more research and im starting to like the nv3500. i think it will be just fine for what im going to do as long as they can handle 400 hp

im prety sure when i do my new engine the gear drive isnt going back in, i havnt taken it on the high way with them and im sure once i do im going to hate them. but you should see the people stare at me just driving threw town!

im off to shingle my dads house, thanks to everyone today you have given me a lot to ponder. im going to do a little priceing on the 3500/4500's see what i like. upper teens for mileage would be the best i have seen in years. i would love to see 20 just to give my dad crap cus his 04 envoy gets 17 at best.

as of right now i still need everything. how much do you want for the hydros and pedals and the little stuff
shiped to 53081

My frame wasnt cracked at all but I did both the weld in and bolt in frame pieces for preventative measures. These frames are notorious for cracking and its best to do it before it cracks in half. That can really ruin a day.

After I shimmed the 205 springs and did the twin stick I personally like how it shifts. With the shimming its a very distinct click into whichever gear I select. Now the low is terrible, something like 1.96.1 or something, but I am assembling a doubler so it doesnt bother me.

Keep in mind the 3500 will not have the L gear that makes the 465/4500 so popular.

ok everyone this is what happened today. i was driving to my parents house about a 20 mile. this is the first time since i bourght it home in april, that i have gone over 30mph. well i was driving 55mph for about 15 min or so and all the sudden the truck pulled to the left like the front left tire went flat, but it wasnt. i pulled over got out and looked, everything still connected and tight in the front end. i get back in and go, anything over 15-20mph and it shook like all hell i drove the 3 miles to my parents house slow and everything was ok. untill it was time to turn right. still going very slow under 5mph i took the corner and tires squeeling truck bouncing, not sure front or rear tires tho. funny part is after sitting for about 6 hours or so, everything was fine. but i left it out their, cus my luck i would have made it 5 miles towards home and something big would have broke.

so that is a brief explaination what happened any thoughts?? at this point im starting to think its a clutch pack in the rear diff, but not at all sure.

just wondering if someone can help me or guide me in the right direction of a new speed-o gear. it has 4"lift 35" 203(prety sure 2.01 or someihtng like that) t-case and 3.73 gears

any help would be great, i know at 20mph on my speed-o im doing 30mph and i know if i keep it under 50 on the speed-o im not going to get a ticket.

for the driving issue
have you pulled the brakes apart or the hubs on the front?
Is the 203 full time or part time and do you have locking hubs?

The speedo I don't know, sorry. I got lucky with mine. Only off 5 mph @70, doing 65.

Speedo wheels are sold by color to identify teeth count. My internet is terrible at my house (country living :haha:) but a simple google search should help you identify the wheels and which ones are right. There should be a calculator that you punch in tranny/t-case and "actual tire size" and it will give you the wheels closest to what you want.

in june i changed front axle u joints, changed oil with amsoil 80/90 gear lube, replaced and repacked wheel bearings, new hub bearings, and still full time 4 wheel with stock hubs. the brakes were good lubed the pins and reassembled. ball joints looked good but i didnt do a pull test.

i also put the bald tire on the rear axle, 3 of my tires are almost like new and the spair is on and its almost bald, it was on the front when i got it but i thought it would be best to have the matching set in the front and had no trouble driving 2.5 hours at 65 mph in april, i havnt gone over 35 since, untill sunday

im thinking two new tires are in my near future

but at the same time i have not even pulled the rear tires to as much as look at the brakes and/or for any kind of leaks of any kind. after i get my front axle settled i was going to do wheel bearings, oil change, seals, and make any necessary repairs at that time. also im going to change rear spring bushings and hardware, and most likely an ord shackle flip to get rid of the blocks

i plan to have this all done befor the snow flys

now that im having issues with something, oil, bearings, seals, and gaskets are cheap enough im getting it tomorrow and then thats done and out of the way!

im also looking at getting a 203 conversion shaft from 1-tonmudder

talked to an old timer at the chevy shop, and even he said using a 75 series tire instead of a 70 series will cause problems with full time 4x4 and a locking rear diff.

either way i found 3 new 35" bfg's for $500 getting them this afternoon. will let you all know how it goes.

well put one new tire on and what a difference! no more poping, pulling, or vibration. this thing rode like i alwayse knew it would.

i still have to replace front spring bushings, which brings me to my next question.

How much will completely worn out bushings take befor i have to worry about something breaking. im only going to be driving on the road untill i get them done. i guess im just wondering if it should be safe enough to cruise around 60mph max and i only have to go 25 miles at a time. any faster than that and that rod knocking sounds like its going to come out the bottom. lol

Is it just the shackle bushings? Or is the front bushing completely toasted also? Shackles being worn to oblivion isn't the hugest deal ever. Fronts being completely shot is a little more dangerous.

the spring bushings are wore out but still totaly their, but the uper spring mounts on the frame are still their but totaly wore out. on the drivers side i can fit my little finger between the spring and the frame but on the passenger side i can not, its about half the distance.

i only need about two more weeks out of them, end of the month at the most. i normaly only drive in the city, but lately i have been going 20 miles or so to my parents house every day and i would like to be able to take this. it would be nice to have the engine knocking be the only thing i have to worry about while driving.
