76 k5 Wheeler build-GIT ER DONE

No pics??
I needed a little time to calm my head. Spending large sums of money like this is pretty stressful/anxiety causing for me. Fortunately ive had enough experience with it now that i can maintain a cool front and a level head to make a logical decision when im dealing with the sellers. But on the drive there and back im more tweaked out than a crack addict. All part of the dream though :thumb:.

They were pretty ate up,More than i expected but still very useable. Their is a flap in one of the sidewalls but its not even quite at the cords yet and with 6 ply sidewalls im not concerned. I may use some bead sealer on it just for some peace of mind. All of them seem to be holding air well except for one that needs a few new bolts on the beadlock ring. The tires are 7 years old which wasnt great news, But assuming all of them hold air they have plenty of tread and i think i can get quite a bit of wheeling fun out of these tires. 2 of them are currently aired up to what feels like street pressures,1 is aired up barely and the one with the bad beadlock seems to be at 0 psi. Im going to put them all at 40 and leave em for a few days then re-check to check for leaks as well as leaktest the gash in the sidewall.

Some chewed up rubber,Apparently he liked to do burn outs on rock faces :doah:

It doesnt look like it but these things actually have 60% tread at the worst spots and 70-80% tread averaged out.

Nice! Those tires are pretty chewed up, But will work just fine. I NEED those wheels though!!!!! Nice!:waytogo:

My dad actually Got the spacers by having homo depot cut some tubing since apparently nothing stocked was near beefy enough. I work most days during normal business hours so my shopping time is pretty limited. The bracket is installed on their with supplied lock washers torqued to 40 ft/lbs. Not a torque spec, Just seemed like a good # since im using lockwashers.

Check list
-pick up brake pads
-get rotors resurfaced (surface rust)
-Install new rotors/hub assembly and reassemble
-Install calipers

Do it all again on the otherside.

Then i get to open up that diff. :deal:

Rotors always surface rust if they sit. The pads will grind that right off.

agreed. the resurfacing is to get a used rotor to mate up with a new set of pads. just gives fresh/flat rotor to give the pads a bite surface. the rust will go away after a few braking sessions.

or you could put WD40 on there...

I have access to a brake lathe for free at my work and this rust is thick so i'd rather get er done. But, That is good knowledge for the future.

Those tires and beadlocks look like junk... I could get rid of them for ya...:D

How bout 2000 bucks + shipping :deal: :thumb:

orbital valve and shaft arrived today. Buyer pics since i cant find my camera

Now i just need to get me some wrenching motivation and this build will be moving along. All of my wheeling budget is spent for 2 more weeks paying off my dad for the money he let me borrow on the tires/wheels. So Probably about 3 weeks or so off any real progress.

Specs
http://www.midweststeering.com/index.php?p=product&id=65&parent=63
7.3 cubic inch displacement
Open center oil flow
Non-load reaction cylinder circuit
9/16"-18 oring ports
2500 psi maximum pressure rating
6 GPM nominal oil flow rating, 2-4 GPM range
Manual steering check valve

Well i was doing a little thinking since i couldnt sleep so i decided to re-evaluate the budget. It appears i priced myself at 2900, which makes no sense because i had 14 checks (200 for 4x4 a piece) and 700 dollars cash in the time alotted. Meaning my total budget all along has been 3500 and not 2900.

Thats what happends when you do your budgets at

So i did a budget check from now to BF with things i still need to buy and....
9 paychecks to go (10 if you count the one a day before BF :haha: ) for 1800 dollars total not counting the one i can cash the day before BF. Also since im going to have a permanent residence in Hollister by the 1st of July my expenses are also lower.

Things that need to be addressed
Axle swap-400 bucks
1.Install 14BFF rear disc i already have
2.Move spring perches if needed
3.Already have spring plates thanks to Chevysmith :waytogo:
4.Weld front and rear + drive flanges in the front, will be replaced with a spool and arb as soon as possible. Drive flanges arent included in above price.
5.New brake lines and u-joints
0/400 spent

Steering-600
170/600 spent

Transfercase/tranny=20 to reseal it. And a whole focking lot of work to get that 300 pound monster back in place. I really want to do a floorshifter set up for the tranny but its not a necessity so we'll see
0/20 spent

MISC. 200
-Gas tank guard,Few grade 8 bolts into the frame and a piece of 1/8 in steel and call it good.
-Pull front and rear bumpers and weld some thick ass steel in between the 2 frame rails and add a recovery point to it front and rear
0/200 spent

1050/1800 without expenses

So looks like i got a spare 500 bucks or so :deal:. I really need some time to recollect myself with the onslaught i've been taking from my ****hole of a work enviroment. Looks like i can now afford that but the question is now what to do with it:whistle:. I've been craving a camping trip baaaaaaad. Maybe ill spend it on a new set of tires the burb desperately needs. Oh the possibilitys.

Must be nice to have all that spare money burning a hole in your pocket like that. :D How late do you normally stay awake, by the way?

Well its not technically in my pocket yet but it definitley gives me some breathing room on my budget ive been sticking to religiously. Its amazing how much their isnt to do around here without spending money :doah:. I spent 360 on my X-Box 360 with some turtle beaches and thats pretty much been my whole entertainment budget. I focking own at Zombies on COD Black Ops now but its getting real focking boring :haha: .

I am a bit of an Insomniac and i dont start work till noon to make things worse. So im usually up anywhere from 1 if i crash early to 5 on a normal day strangely enough.

Edit: I've been thinking about fixing up my bike and riding to work to save some cash. Well i think i know what to do with the spare cash
http://motorbicycle.org/index.php?m...id=263&zenid=bb148b91a143e0de5ad1dea95bb38f4f

Im thinking put some street tires on my bike,Convert it over to disc brakes at least in the rear,Strip the paint and do black rattle can then do some bling lighting on it. I wonder if i can start a build thread for my bike :haha:

I'd squirrel that 500 away until you make 2 or 3 shake down runs and see what breaks. I'd be nice to have some cash waiting in the wings for repairs or to work out the bugs that come up in your shake down runs.

In all honesty its probably going to get spent on new tires on the tow rig and fixing that tailgate as well as new idler bearings before they seize up and trash my motor. The motor kit for the bike is a pipe dream right now lol.

Gotcha... Just remember that when it comes to wheeling its not IF you break it's WHEN. You slap that 60 and those iroks on there yet? Installing parts you already have doesn't cost any money does it

I must admit, I havent touched the 60 since it got home. Im keeping it out of the truck until i can get a double ended ram mount figured out and high steer arms installed so when i put it in the truck all i gotta do is hook up hoses. Speaking of i gotta look for some ideas to mate the orbital valve to my current steering shaft. Then ive been going back and forth in my head on welding the front temporarily or not. So i have some good excuses for not touching it yet :haha:

little update,I picked up the brake pads for the 14 bolt disc conversion. Picked up some new grade 8 hardware and got that one rim missing bolts all bolted together and got all the bolts torqued to a uniform 15 ft/lbs all around and it appears to be holding air perfectly. I need to pull the inner and outer wheel bearings out of my 14 bolt SRW hubs to repack em and get the surface rust off the rotors. Anyone know how to get these bearings out? I tried tuggin on em a bit but they didnt seem to quite fit coming out the back.
