76 k5 Wheeler build-GIT ER DONE

They've been saying the same thing about electric cars since 1976. gotblazers doesn't have 40 years haha. ;)
Actually Electric technology has been a viable option several times and was shut down by partys with conflicting interest to the electric cars goal but thats more of a lounge topic.

I thought blazerfest was in hollister...You should be 3 minutes away...
I thought so to until i read the details on norcalbigdawgs site for this year :doah::doah::doah::doah:. I wont have a vehicle with adequate protection for the real fun stuff up their and 3 hours of driving in a big block burb plus renting a trailer for the weekend is more money than its worth to me when i can spend all weekend at hollister for the price of gas and admission and with my house less than 10 miles from the entrance its pretty dang cheap lol.

Things have been a bit slow with me focused on getting a trailer so i dont need to rent one for the move so progress should pick back up soon :D.Just picked up a trailer for the k5's. Its a bit small at 15 ft but i did the math and it works out. Its a deck over and 79'' wide so it fit my purposes and best of all my wallet. Has brakes on all 4 wheels.

Yes, but most of the "Offroad" areas require driving on the road both before and after to fill up the tanks. every gas station has gas, but not all have propane and those that do don't always refill large propane tanks. Propane is interesting, but not "simpler" than TBI.

Propane is way easier than tbi, carb, efi or what ever... Stupid simple, plug and play... I run all day on an 8 gal forklift tank... I have mounts for two and working on a propane fill station on the bus...

All you need is an Impco 425, Model E and vff30... Get some hoses and it will run no matter what...

We want pics Greg...

I pulled mine years ago with a 16 footer and didn't like it at all... Never felt comfortable... You could add a beaver tail and move the axles back though...

Im going to look for a truck that i can part out with a motor i can use for this while the 400SB finds its new home in my new garage on a engine stand as money comes up for it. In other news the 350SB for the 73 is pretty much ready to come off the engine stand. Motor is complete from oil pan to intake.

Funny to think just a few months ago this seemed an impossible feat.

p.s Dont worry this is just a mock up. It will get wheel chocked and strapped way down before any towing is done.

Looks like all your dreams are coming true. Keep it up dude. :waytogo:

Thanks man. Well it gets better. Escrow closed on the new house today which has all the space i need to keep my racing dreams going.

Financial restraints are really holding me back as expected but i cant believe how far i've gone from the start and look forward to continued progress. It is truly a psychological battle to live off of less than 50 bucks a week and work full time in my ****hole of a first job.

Anyways pics
I like this city already :haha:

We got a whole lot of this

The entrance to my paradise and all that sidewalk parking is mine as well :D

On with the build plans. I need a welder now. So im shopping for one of those and once i get one i can go on with welding my spiders and working on the hydro mount up front which brings me to the next purchase which is a double ended ram with 22cu/in or so of displacement and a 8'' stroke. Then a filter and resevoir as well as cooler and i need to find a way to mate my steering shaft to the orbital valve. I dont anticipate my power steering pump lasting long in these conditions so that will get done sometime.

At that point i have everything i need to get my rig on one tons/bead locked 40s'' which are all holding air btw with full hydraulic steering spooled front and rear. I need to get a 350tbi in there ASAP because my q-jet is shot justifiably (180k and 35 years later). The th350 will probably keep being ran as is just with a floor shifter until i have issues and then a 203/205 doubler is my highest priority after that followed closely by a overhaul on the fuel/brake system to bring it up to racing specs and then the cage work begins which will require a bender that will slow down progress a little more due to moneys. But its all coming along. Hell 6 months ago i didnt imagine i'd be able to get a tow rig/trailer/one tons 40''s on aluminum beadlocks for at least 2 years so i'd say things arent goin too bad :).

More toys came in. I almost have my basic stuff covered so i can really start havin some fun. 5/16 capability on a 120V mig welder was damn impressive enough for me. I was going to get one on egay originally but i kept gettin outbid and everyone on CL was a scammer/flake it seemed so my dad decided to throw in 200 bucks on top of the 400 i gave him and we get one brand new at Lowes. Little did i know he would be getting me a Badass Auto Darkening helmet as well as variety of other neccessary welding Acc. . Said it was my birthday present since he didnt have any spare cash at the time. I dont think i could have a more supportive dad for a wannabe ultra4 racer kid like myself.
Straps for the k5,I just tryed em out and they bring er down nice.

Sweet! Let us know how that welder does. I've seen it at Lowe's and considered getting one but wanted to talk to someone first and see if it was any good.

Well the move is finally finished... enough that i can start workin on shet. I tore my 14 bolt pass. side back down and put in the spacer between the preload nut and the bearing. 50 ft lbs while turning it and then backed off down to 10 lbs. Then in goes the locking clip and torque the hub nut to 50 lbs. Torqued all the axle shaft bolts to 50 lbs as well.

This move has netted me a huge 2nd driveway with enough room to fit 3 blazers my tow rig and my car trailer with a bunch of spare room for parts and tools all fenced in completely private

. Oh and did i mention im 15 minutes from my favorite testing grounds Hollister Hills.

Got the dif cover off and im having it drip dry into a catch pan until next weekend. Need to get a Dif. Cover ordered and a lube locker gasket before re-assembly.
I've got an open dif. as you can see so i would be able to just weld through the windows, But im seeing all kinds of controversy over that and on the flip side tons of people saying i did it with 10000 feet tall tires and a 40000L BBC and it never failed. My main concern is i dont want to have to reset the gears right now sooo just for ****s and giggles... Thoughts?

I suggest you pull it out to weld the gears. I dont feel like you can get enough material welded through the windows. and it really isnt hard to pull the carrier out and take it apart on a 14 bolt. Just pay attention to the adjusters and put it back exactly as you took it out and you dont have to reset the gears.

Ps.... You're gonna EAT tires.

Welded rears put ridiculous pressure on tires, around corners and such.
I don't know if you plan to DD this truck, or what, I'm just puttin' it out there.

Chris (NorCal Chris) has his 14b welded, and he puts up w/ it.
But, I, on the other hand, have a Detroit Locker,
and hate to chirp the tires around corners.

Its green stickered.

i'd go mini-spool they are relatively cheap and very easy to install, i put mine in, in about 30 minutes and I didn't need to worry about warping the posts when welding up the orb, it was worth the cash for the ease of install IMO.

How on earth do i get these fockin ring gear bolts out. The stupid motherfocking carrier just spins on me no matter how i try to clamp/wedge it and according to specs these bolts are at 120 ft/lbs. No i dont have air tools available atm btw.

Bolt it down to your work station. Have a buddy with a pry bar in one of the four holes around the side push while you loosen, same goes for re-torquing.
