76 k5 Wheeler build-GIT ER DONE

Ya I say take it out and I like to Pre heat thick stuff to get good penetration right away and not wait for the welder to heat it. To loosen those bolts, try sticking it in between something. Like next to a wall or fence then move a tractor or the blazer right next to it and sandwich it in with the tires. Then, crank away.
Wow that's redneck:)

Only you would have a tractor sitting around for said purpose  :haha:. Also while your here would you happen to know if that 60 had 4.10 gearing or not i already counted the 14bff and it is.

I found my air tools and got er done quick. I tried to freehand weld the spiders and sides together and of course they didnt all sit in the perfect position. Later on it occured to me that i should have tack welded it through the windows, but its pretty lopsided now to the point where i cant even really get it back in the carrier so im just going to order the spool. On the + side i got a bunch of great welding experience and i should not make this mistake on my 60. It was my first time ever welding and you can definitley tell. But alot of the welds did make great penetration although thats not saying much seeing as how i was on my maximum setting. Anyways heres the pic of my ulti-phail.

I welded the spiders in my 14b a couple years ago and have never had a problem besides EATING tires out back even with as little as it sees the pavement. Its good bang for the buck though for a dedicated wheeler.

How did you hold the spiders/side gears in place while you were welding them? I pulled it all out and it seemed impossible to get everything to line up long enough for me to weld it. Everytime i got 3 spiders lined up properly with the sidegears the last one came out of alignment. The only thing i can think of is tack welding it before opening the carrier :dunno:

That's how you do it. I got in there with the carrier together on the bench and put some GOOD tacks to hold it all together before I pulled it apart. Then I did some pre-heat, welded it with a lot of heat then a little post heat then let it sit on the bench the rest of the afternoon to cool slowly. It's been in there a couple years and I've never had a problem. I'd prefer to have a "real" locker but for now it lets me spend money elsewhere.

I'm looking for a smog exempt platform. I'm at a point where im ready to build something that has more in common with a Buggy than a DD'able rig so i'm looking for a smog exempt 4x4. This is what im looking for if you have any leads since i see your local

Besides that i picked up a parts truck with a Good Tbi 350 for less than a good TBI 350 from most sources :D. That's sitting in my yard and im parting it out atm if you need any parts (link in the sig). I wanted to go to fuel injection but swapping it over on my 400SBC was more of a project than i wanted to deal with so IMO just getting a whole truck is going to be the smart money move for me.

I got a 2wd steering box so i can swap shafts onto my 4wd box for crossover. I got new spiders and side gears for the rear 14BFF i focked up by not tack welding before i opened the carrier. I need to weld those up and get the gears set back up then figure out what im going to do with the Dana 60 front in terms of traction aids. Definitley not going to weld the front because i wont be running any hydro assist or full hydro for a while. I still have the Orbital valve from when i was going to go green sticker so thats always an option. I'm planning on just using the th350/203 out of my k5 after a quick regasket and adjusting the linkage on the 203. Doubler will come someday but not going to hold up my build while i wait for the cash for that. 4.10 gears (hoping the dana 60 is same as the 14BFF) and the 2:1 off the np203 on 40'' rubber isnt going to make for much of a crawl ratio unfortunately.

Also i picked up an Affordable tubing bender with a 1.5'' die and i still have my brand new lincoln all ready to rumble so a Cage will be one of my first issues once i get my platform because i dont know about you guys but when im out running some of the narrower trails with steeper drop offs out at HH all i can think about the whole way up is ''dont roll, dont roll, dont roll''. HH is only 15 minutes from my house so i dont need to keep it too streetable fortunately and if i screw up basecamp aint far.

So, All i've really done is parts/tools accumulation. Once I can find a smog exempt chevy 4x4 pick up that folks arent asking a fortune for i'll be able to make some progress. Not too much money left that needs to be spent before i can get wheeling and make it a running project opposed to a pile of parts. Still bummed i couldnt get Capt Throttles rig when it was available. That thing would have been perfect, But thats life.

Anyways, Hows the big orange beast doing if i recall you correctly from BF?

So what are you doing with the 76 then, keeping it or selling it?

I'm taking the drivetrain,Got a guy who wants the axles. The tranny/TC will go into the build and im going to keep the 400SBC around just because Virgin 400 blocks in good running condition are just good to have around. My dad wants some parts off it for the 73 and then the rest will probably see its end. We actually bought it as a parts truck originally for the 73 so the ol girl had one hell of a run.

If you end up with the tub only, or even with the frame give me buzz.
No title needed even.

Alright,Frame is bent in the rear though.Tub should be ok minus some damage to the driverside door hinges. Be a while before i get there though.

You haven't seen my posts have you?
I am just checking for future times
I could use as little as just the tub, but if the frame is there even bent I could use it.
