Trying to get my garage straightened up today. Figured the best place to put the tires is on the truck...

Lol that’s not exactly happened. I needed to put them on and see where to put the battery, and I need to flex it out with the engine hoist so I can build shock hoops, and measure for my front driveshaft. I need to get the tires swapped over onto my beadlocks but I’m not looking forward to it.

Used the engine hoist to cycle the suspension, and it’s not even worth posting pics... Found a few things that need to be fixed before it will work right.

First thing I need to do is add a washer on the inside of the front shackles at the spring and maybe hit the frame with the grinder. The shackle hits and binds up pretty bad. Not a major issue but still frustrating. I might need to pull a couple leafs out of the pack too as it seems to be a little stiff. Then I can measure for shock placement.

The next thing is rethink my rear spring packs. They’re way too forkin stiff. With the front tire in the air I can put the jack under the shock mount on the right side of the axle and lift both back tires off the ground. I had a feeling they were going to be stiff but I really didn’t expect them to be like that! I really wish I could do it right and just dump some money on some ORD packs but that’s not gona happen any time in the near future. My wife said it probably wasn’t a good idea... she gave me some crap about a house payment and groceries and something about gas and electricity? I wasn’t really paying attention. (Just kidding)

One thing that I was happy with is this... I have eliminated every bit of frame flex and when I had it flexed out it wasn’t creeping and popping and all that nonsense. The shock hoops will tie it all together and take care of some additional bracing so hopefully I won’t be fighting stress cracks or broken stuff.

Overall it was a depressing 5 day weekend and I’m not really happy with what I accomplished. We put almost 700 miles on from Friday to Sunday which killed any productivity, and today I had to quit early to go have dinner with some people I really don’t care to eat with. But I’ve hit a wall and I need to regroup anyway. This was the last of my long weekends so I’m pretty bummed about that, but I guess I still have the same amount of days off. But anyway... enough whining.

Need to order parts, but I need to spend the money on more important things right now. Good news is I think I can probably pick up some overtime this month if I want it!

I spent a lot of time trying to decide whether or not I should just buck up and do the cage while I have the interior apart, and this is what I finally decided...

I don’t have time to pull my dash out to do the cage right. I need to get this thing out of the garage ASAP or it’ll be another year before it’s finished. But I really feel the need for the cage. I wheeled my dodge for years without a cage, and I got into some stupid situations that I would have needed a cage if it would have gone over. Pretty scary to think about really. I expect to be in some similar situations with this rig so I want something to keep me from getting smooshed. This isn’t my first choice, and I was honestly avoiding anything that would take away bed space, but now that it’s done I like it. Anyone that went to BB18 will know where the idea came from. No it’s not as strong as it could be, but the way I see it is... it’s better than nothing.

In hindsight it would have been nice to add a big X in that hoop before all the sheet metal work eh? I still agree that adding some bracing is a lot better than none.

Lol yeah for sure! Good news is there is an upright right there almost directly under it, and that tube that goes across is 1/4 wall so it should be solid. I’m not positive but I’m pretty sure it’s DOM. It was in some scrap I hauled off. It’s definitely seamless, and is exactly 2” OD. It probably should have been used for something different, but it was free and I have another stick of it stashed away.

Good work Aaron! The bed is my favorite part of the truck so far, it just looks right

Without having an interior cage I couldn’t settle on how I wanted to mount my harnesses. I was about to go the same direction as @Bent77 but my harnesses are different than his, so I would have had to build floor plates, and tabs along with the hoop. I was just about to get after it when this idea popped into my head. It’s a piece of 2”x1/4” strap. The middle seat will just get a factory lap belt for now, but I’ll order another harness eventually. Overall I’m happy with how this worked out! It was way easier than doing a full cage and even though it’s not as strong, I believe it’s light years ahead of the factory 1977 belts and lack of roll over protection.
