Pulling some all-nighters are we? :D

Good eye! yes there has been all of all nighters on this truck. I work swing shift and with alot of overtime. So alot of the time I'll do the noisy stuff (air chisel) before work and when I get home I'll do all the bolting up stuff.:eek1:

Look at what I found a satellite photo of my 77 k5. It's in the yellow circle.
skyviewlocation.jpg

I've started the new 2" lift tough country 52" long spring swap on my 77 k5. It's been real interesting so far.
This is a before pic with the procomp 6" lift and 1" body lift installed

here is the old shackle mount pics (front and rear)

A before shot of the over all suspension.

This pic is the one thing I already see as a problem. Someone did some real bad welds. For some reason angle Iron was welded to the frame on both sides and then cut off at the bottom. They welded all the way through the frame messing it up alot. I'll deal with it one way or another:hack: .
weldedonironrs.jpg

I took several measurements to help in knowing exactly how much lift I achieved with this swap.

First area was the spring to frame height.
springhightmeasuredrs.jpg

12 3/8 inch
framehightfromspringrs.jpg

next fender height from tire.
fenderwellmeasuredrs.jpg

12 1/2"
fenderwellhightrs.jpg

And one more area, I took a measurement of the front bumper height at the bottom of the plate.
platehightmeasuredrs.jpg

34 7/16
platehight34-7rs.jpg

These should help in a more accurate hight for new spring swaps and not used or used rebuilt springs. Also there isn't to much out there for a 2" lift spring swap, just alot of talk of what you should get for the swap.

Here is my new parts from Diyx. I got B-52 and the upper shackle mount with bushings and grade 8 greasable bolts.
diyxpartshelpersrs.jpg

The B-52's were used on Diyx's shop truck. and I got a great deal on them for being slightly used. All other parts are new. all parts is of great quality, very impressive.
diyxpartsrs.jpg

Pics soon of the install, but first I got to get started on the tear down.:doah:

I almost done with the install just taking a small break. I already have the k5 back on the ground. just have to put the bumper back on and measure it out to see what I got. so far so good!:D

After 6hrs. of work it's done. here is the build!

I thought i would show a comparison of the 6 inch lift 52's and 2 inch lift 52's.
52inchcomparisonrs.jpg

after the old spring was removed and I cut off the angle iron that was in the way. I installed the B-52 with the mount as forward as possible.
100_5281.jpg

Next I installed the new springs on to the d60 to help guide in placement.
100_5284.jpg

Next I installed the rear upper shackle mount. I decided to use the lower left hole of the old mount position and the lower right hole of the new mount to align the mounts on to the frame. once this is done you should used a 2 1/8 hole saw for the bushing hole. I made a paper template to help in all of this.
100_5330.jpg

I found out I had a friday frame meaning the lower potion of my frame was longer going inward so I had to trim the rain with a angle grinder.
100_5332.jpg

100_5327.jpg

This is what it looks like bolted up and hanging.
100_5328.jpg

On a good note free hanging my pinion angle is also good. still slightly pointing up.
100_5329.jpg

This is the position I decided to try first giving me max. approach angle.
100_5337.jpg

Now if you look back at earlier pics my shackle angle was reversed once the shims and 1/2" longer shackels were added. With the truck back on the ground this is what my shackle angle looked like with the new set-up. It wasn't bad but not great.
100_5334.jpg

overall truck look.
100_5333.jpg

now the height measurement from tire to wheel well was 12 3/4 inches thats a 1/4 rise over what I had. but I want a better shackle angle then this.

100_5338.jpg

so I tried again with the B-52 adjustments. This time I'll try 1 hole back.
100_5339.jpg

New shackle angle.
100_5340.jpg

100_5342.jpg

Next set

measurement of the frame to the spring pack is 12 3/16 inch.
100_5352.jpg

Plate height measurement is 34 inches.
100_5346.jpg

Wheel well height from tire is 12 1/4 inches.
100_5345.jpg

So what do I think? I love it, I have a much softer ride with alot more suspension travel, and better approach angle. The only thing lost was 1/4 inch of ride height from the original 6 inch lift kit with ORD hd shackles.:D
so for the real question how much lift did it really give me that's easy. A 2" lift 52" swap comes out to exactly 6 inches of lift when compared to a 6 inch pro-comp lift kit and 1/2 inch longer shackles (1/4 inch lift). I used the same 4 degree shim on both systems so there is no difference there.
100_5343.jpg

The back end is a little high (3/4-1 inch higher), but remember it going to a fab shop now. I'll be getting a new floor tunnel and rear bumper with Tire carrier (mega weight with tire), and getting the frame reinforced.:D it should equal out if not my front and rear suspensions are adj.

I wanna see that thing out on the trail and with trimmed fenders. I really like how it came out.

thanks man!
I still have the fab. work, the new gears to install, and detroit electrac. I'm also looking into hydro assist. steering and hydro boost brakes. Of course I still need seats, winch (needed soon for fab shop), and to find some shocks for the new suspension. finally new drive shaft's now the axles are in place where I am finally satisfied.

The goal is to go wheel it. hopefully it won't be to long now.:saweet:

Suggestions people, I want to here it.

I love it! I also had the same problem with my shackle hitting the frame. I ended up using some large thick washers to space out the shackles.

Looks great! :waytogo:

Thank you Muddermilitia.

Has anyone heard anything about the edelbrock xtreme travel shocks? I heard they have a 14 inch shock out. Are they any good? I'm not wanting to spend a lot on them, but I don't want garbage.

That's a damn nice lookin' blazer! Good build. Thanks for the compliments! We try our best.

yeah, are you looking at the res or non res. model. Procomp sells the same shock for less $$. they work well.

No really the parts were very easy to install and I was very impressed with the quality. I still can't believe how little they cost compared to some other companies out there. So far I have only needed to call you twice, once to order and the second to ask a question about my frame deal. Here you are in the shop and the phone was answered by you each time right away, ready to help. Your customer service is right on.
Thank you

I was wondering if they were the same shock or not. Yeah I'm looking for res. version. I'll check it out.

What do you guys think about blisten 7100 series are they real worth the money ($190+)? it's definitely more then i was wanting to spend. I've also seen some mono tube shock with the travel I was wanting for around $70.00.

:1zhelp:

I would probably go with the $70 monotube shock rather than the fancy ones with reservoirs. Unless you plan on running that thing through the desert, or taking it to the dunes, I don't think you need a reservoir type shock
