77k5 build thread - Wanna Crush a ford taurus? help is needed.

Filo is on the roll. My rear bumper is well on it's way. It looks as if I may have a k5 to bring to Indiana.

Here is a pic from the other day.

Then there is today, Filo's day off. I'm liking what I see so far. Here you go!

nice. it looks really good

Thanks, I'll be stopping by on Tuesday. Hopefully they are done with the bumper. They are making the rear bumper to handle a winch also. I will have to deal with the plate install for it (i believe), but the rest of the work will be done. Next, they will be boxing in the frame in the rear next to the rear shackle hangers. Doing this will give some support to the frame and give me a place to bolt up my fuel system.

Went by the shop today and they were not quite done yet. no worries though they said they would tonight, and with the frame work also.

Here is what they have.

The tire mount was still in spot welded form, but looking good. They have the side arms welded on now with a hi lift mount. On the ground it kind of looks like a spider lol  . It was made to handle at least a 44 inch tire, great for later builds, and changes. On the top side of the bumper filo said the tire covers most of the open space. So when I get to Indiana I'll have to figure out a way to cover it up some until I get my rear winch in.

Here is a question. what is the best way to wire up my winch? I'll need it to get it on the trailer for when I move to Indiana. Ant help out there on this?

got some pics finally of the rear bumper assembled.

I still have the winch mount to do, but it will have wait for Indiana. I also got the ok for the seat mounts and trans. tunnel work. I went to Vegas and stopped by 4 wheel parts to get some misc. needed parts. So everything should be done on Monday. Tuesday I pick up the budget truck and trailer for the big move on Wendsday. I still haven't got everything packed yet. And I also have the new wheel bearings to put on my boat trailer. It's been so busy with the k5, Jeep, Packing, and working. Man is time flying by.:doah:

Cool thank you, once my wife and I get out there we'll see what's up.

Today UNKL AL's got the trailer hitch on the rear and started on boxing in the rear portion of the frame. They will be doing the exhaust on Saturday, and finishing up the floor pan and seat mounts on Monday. It's a tight schedule, but looking good.

Hey that is what this place is for . To meet people , help out and have good buddie's .

Ummmm could you do some "splainin" on that tire mount? Is it basicaly soilid mounted while being able to remove a few bolts to take it off? swing out? tilt down? No offence but it seams a little awkward just lookin at it, maybe im missing something.

No prob. man,
The 2 arms on the side of the mount is held on by a poly bushing (2x3x9/16). Below the bushing is a small steel plate (see pic)and there will be one on the top side also(later date), but hinged. Because I'm moving over 2000 miles for now the tire mount will be held up by grade 8 bolts. When I get to Indiana I'll be changing the 9/16" bushing sleeve to a 5/8" bushing sleeve so I can hold it in place with (2) 5/8" locking trailer hitch pins while on the road to help against theft of the tire or mount. When I go wheeling, were the need for access to a tire is more needed I'll just put in standard 5/8" quick release trailer hitch pins.

The reason I went with this design for a tire mount, is how easy it's use is (stop, drop, and roll). Instead of needing 2 people to lift a 42"-44" tire onto a standard side swing mount, while aligning it on the mount. I only have to pull 2 quick release pins and the tire drop's to the ground(with the mount swinging downward). Then I'll unbolt the rim and tire from the mount and roll it off. To put it on I just roll the rim and tire on the mount , bolt it on and lift, then drop the (2) pins in and go on my way down the trail. It's a ONE MAN JOB with no hassles or stress. Once I have my roll cage in , I'll install a power window motor in the rear door with a small power boat winch mounted onto an upper bar of the cage. the motor will be controlled by a switch on the rear door. Then there is no lifting or setting down on the ground. Now when I'm entered in something and don't want the weight or over hang from the tire and mount. I'll only need (2) bolt's taken off from the bottom of the A-frame of the mount . Then the whole mount comes off, with no ill effects. Stop, Drop, and Roll! Quick, easy, painless!!!:D

What do you guy's think about a moving thread in the tow section. I'll be on the road in about 3 day's if everything goes right and my k5 is done. 2000 miles with a 24 ft budget truck & a budget car alum. hauler. They told me I'm about 1800 lbs over weight with my k5, but still rented it to me because I got the insurance with the rentals:rolleyes: . If I make the trip cool, if not I'll have some good pics for you guy's:o .

Maybe I'll make the papers if it fails because of the resent news media on rental moving companies.:haha:

I have a question about the bends in your tubing, particularly the flat spots, does that affect strength in any way? I've seen quite a lot of other bumpers/cages on here that didn't have those, I'm guessing your guy bent them differently.

Great looking rig by the way.

Nova... I need to move my K5 across state lines and with the rear axle being shot, it can't be driven. I haven't rented a car hauler from Budget or U-Haul because they claim it's too big. Mine is totally stock right now in terms of weight, width, height, tire size, etc... I'm guessing that if yours fits ok on there, then mine will too

I'm hoping...I gotta get it back from Tennessee ASAP.

Thanks,

~jp

It does look different, but it works the same. They are very strong. The tubing is 1.75" plenty strong for what I need.;)

We will find out for sure on Tuesday. I'll post some pics on here to let you know for sure once I get it on the trailer. What I do know is, I have to run stock rims with stock tires to get it on there. The biggest trailer I could find was from budget. It's the alum. one with a 80" floor width between the fenders and 4200 lbs. capacity.
