ok so everyone else is doing a build thread... I guess I will give in.. hah...

1990-1997

It all started back when i was a young lad getting ready to turn 17. I would be 17 on January 3rd 1990. My
father is a mechanic and told me he did not want me to become a mechanic, however he wanted me to be able
to repair my own vehicles. My fathers friend owns a junkyard so we headed over there to look at what was
available. My brother picked out a 1973 GMC K30. As he was building it and it needed everything. He picked
up another truck for $300 for the cab and parts. When done I gave him $150 for his scraps for me to build.
NOw it was my turn to build. it took about 8 trucks to build my 1978 chevy k20 and it shows...
from different bed sides, different tailgate, different cab and front clip....
Me so proud in the back of the truck.
Truck was built super cheap but look at those craiger ss spotweld blue center disk rims!!! tires and rims
cost me more than i spent building the truck

during my buildup the engine had 2 stuck valves - Marvel Mystery Oil took care of that.
Drove the truck to school knowing 400k+ miles on this motor. It was my weekend warrior.
My father replaced a cam on a car and said it would work in my truck.. from a police car he said it should
be torquey.... so out went the cam and put new bearings... that was it....
with the following specs
350 4bolt main
turbo 400 - put a b&m stage II shiftkit in
np203 transfer case
dana 44 front axle with 3.73's and open
14bolt full floater with 3.73's and open.
I wheeled this truck but knew its limitations and still had a blast. My phrase that my family would always
bring up when they saw another truck was... THAT IS HOW HIGH I WANT TO GO... it was 15" and 44's.. cmon
this is the 90's!!!!! big stiff suspension but deep thick mud....
I am a chevy guy all the way but a bud bought a ford f250 on 36's with a manual trans.. after driving that
and seeing the power control I knew I needed an upgrade....
I found a chevy truck that was soooo rusty... motor had a knock... but was only $500. I crawled under it
and it had a 350/SMC465/NP205/D44/14bff - that is what i could tell... but when i looked at the metal tag
on the front axle i saw... 4.55 !!!!! WOW FACTORY 4.56's!!!!! I paid the $500 and was off... the guy told
me his son was mad at him and drove it into the ocean thus why it was so rusty...
when i got it home it came apart....
i had 2 trucks to merge...
here is my motor
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/410443/fullsize/465000plus.jpg
all apart
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/410444/fullsize/rebuildtime2.jpg
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/410441/fullsize/rebuildtime.jpg
here is my full new rolling chassis!!!!!!!!!!
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/410442/fullsize/framed1.jpg

so it is 1991/92 at this point.. and my father helped me do a auto to clutch conversion when even today
this is a feat asked on many truck boards!!!!!!!!
in 1994 i was talking to a budy and he had a diesel truck he was going to scrap... for $300 i purchased it
and brought it home...
my truck body of many makes was getting pretty rusty and beat up... so a full body swap and auto to stick
conversion happened again...
3" body lift went on at this time...
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/410445/fullsize/passengerside2.jpg
My truck went more of a weekend warrior to a full time to work truck... the days of weekend warrior were
tougher as my commute to work was farther...
this went on until 2007 when i bought another car so now i have that 3rd vehicle.. wife and myself have a
dd... and the truck can become the fulltime toy..
so my THAT IS HOW HIGH I WANT TO GO can go into effect...
since i knew NJ was changing their lift laws I had to act fast...
I knew the inspection was tough on high rise vehicles so I went to a local guy to lift the truck. He
quoted me a price and picked the truck up. He said 2 weeks and the truck will be done..
here she is at the shop
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/410446/fullsize/stage1reardriverside.jpg
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/410447/fullsize/stage1passengerside.jpg
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/410448/fullsize/stage1front.jpg
3 months later.. lift laws changed and truck just got done. Also before i could get the truck back I had
to pay the remaining $180.... oh that was an estimate I was told as I already paid a big down payment!!!!
now I owed $550!!!!! Where am I going to come up with that cash? I managed to but it was tough...
I got the truck back and it just sat...
12" suspension lift under my 3" body lift...
here she sat not able to go on the road and im flat broke
before the lift law change i was going to go rockwells and 53" michelins legal on the road.... then got to
deal with still lowering it later...
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/410450/fullsize/drivewayornament2.jpg
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/410449/fullsize/drivewayornament1.jpg
it was now known as our driveway ornament or also known as my wifes new kitchen...it hurt not being able
to drive it.. I was supposed to get the truck back in 2 weeks... but 3 months later it still needs a motor
and needs to come down...
I bought a motor from the same guy.. even though I should not have dealt with him.. he had a motor out of
a 1991 chevy caprice police car. He said it was a high hp motor.. at least 260hp!!! Well against my wifes
opinion I bought it... swapped it over to carb and put it in the truck...
the internet was not what it was back then as it is now... a 1991 caprice police motor is a L05 block -
hydraulic roller motor.. cool.. but 195hp/295lb ft torque...
Truck sat since 1997 to when we moved out of our house in with relatives as we sold our house within 10
days and didnt have a house to go to... also with our first kid it was tough to get the truck lowered...
so it went to moms and sat there... I took the body lift off to start lowering the truck...
we finally bought our new house and the truck was delivered.. by the same guy that hosed me over twice...
should not have used him again however he was the only one willing to deliver it as it was HIGH..
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/193906/fullsize/truck_at_new_house_61403_p.jpg
6/2003
moving into our new house..
our delelopment is small and there is a cop around the corner. In my last town you cannot have any cars
not registered.. well the truck isnt registered so it had to go in the garage..
the wife went out with a friend to get some cleaning supplies for the house.. she said.... dont worry
about the truck.... dont put it in the garage....and she left...
my friends looked at me and said so lets get to hit.. I said what.. he said... cmon you never listen
anyway I know it is going in the garage...
so i backed it up..
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/193908/fullsize/truck_at_new_house_61403_s.jpg
not gonna clear
how to do this...
i had 2 rims....
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/193909/fullsize/truck_at_new_house_61403_u.jpg
still not gonna fit...
well 4psi air in back will lower it... and
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/193911/fullsize/truck_at_new_house_61403_g.jpg
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/193912/fullsize/truck_at_new_house_61403_h.jpg
Yay... as it was in.. the wife was driving up going OH GOD!!!!!!
well she was in there...
the truck sat lifted and outside since 1997 to 2003 when we bought our house and i actually have a garage
now....
so I got tired of the truck sitting there.... I WANTED IT ON THE ROAD!!!!
I became good friends with the cop and he said... hey where is your truck.. i said in the garage.. he then
told me we are allowed vehicles in the driveway not registered... YIPPIE!!!!!!!!!
I talked to the wife and said I want it done and on the road... we agreed but had to have a game plan. I
had to do the work to keep the price down.. since I am not allowed 44's and the work began... i had to
build a mean self recovery truck... 1 ton axles, detroits, winches, snorkel......
9/2003
Scored me a 1979 gmc k30 on 38's as a parts truck from a friend.. that needed ALOT of work...
Bought it for $500 and sold my d44 front with 4.56's and the 14bff from the gmc for $250...
so for $250 I walked away with
D60 front, rollbar, 4 core radiator and some extra parts....
11/2003
d60 went in
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/193917/fullsize/d60e.jpg
1/2004
bud that bought my axles told me he had bumpers he didnt want and i could have it
freebies... smittybilts!!!!
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/193843/fullsize/tubebumpers_huge.jpg
3/2004
my axle parts came in from randys ring and pinion....
d60 front carrier, 4.56's, detroit and rebuild kit
14bff detroit as i already had 4.56's
https://www.supermotors.net/getfile/193850/fullsize/lockersgears.jpg
4/2004
2nd day of the month.... I called the inspection station and asked them what size tires I was allowed.. he
said as long as they measure 38" you are good.. he said 39.5 boggers are 38.5 so as long as it is 38.x he
will pass them...
so 40" ground hawgs (love those tires) are 39" on a 9.75x16.5 rim... i went with 12x16.5 for my new
40x17x16.5 hawgs....
There they are... ordered from 4wheelparts.com

Truck went through inspection and they failed me like usual... but this was a new batch of guys.
they failed me for
leaking power steering - understood
no front mudflaps??????? didnt know i needed them
too many auxillary lights.. 4 on front bumper and 5 on rollbar.. can only have 2!!!!!!!
they said the tires were too big but he measured them and they passed me....
when they passed me they asked me something very important...
DO NOT DRIVE THE TRUCK UNTIL YOU FIX IT!!!!
seems the guy that lifted the truck put 56" leafs on the back when i should have 52".. so they were bent
and ready to break!!!!!!!!!!
so i fixed it...

I called the inspection station and talked to them... they said nothing has changed so i figure I will be
good.. once he asked what tires I had.. I said 40" hawgs.. he said.. nope wont pass you...
I told him they were 38.8" and he said no... 38.0 is what i need... i was very frustrated and it tore me
up... now i got $1200 worth of tires that i cant use... so i got home and measured them..
38.25 was one and 38.5 were the others... im getting ready to put the truck on the road and take it to
them and see what happens...
i still have to put the snorkel on, rear mudflaps...
my frustrations are always there.. my son enjoys going wheeling...
I now have a second son and he is 4.. before the 3 of us could go for a ride... now we cant..
my future upgrade means a new overhaul...
due to NJ lift laws i could purchase a 1980 K30 crew cab @ 12k gvrw and be lift law exempt...
but my true plans are to enjoy MY truck...and my plans are..
motor - replace with a high hp motor
Trans - NV4500 or NV5600 for overdrive and still granny gear - this truck is a drive it to the trail and
home...
axles - thinking Unimog 416's with disc brakes and super fast gears (5.09's)
winch - front hydralic run off of an electric pump... if i was going forward I want to keep going.. if not
the rear winch will pull me out. I have 2x8d batteries in the bed to go to the 15k winch!!!! but batteries
are now bad from sitting...
electric - pontiac transport 140a alternator to replace 63 amp stock
- run dual marine switches one under hood and one in bed to allow charge bed batteries or run
winch from all 4 batteries (dual duralast gold 1000's under hood and 2x 8d's in bed)
- headlight relay upgrade
cab - crew cab - to get the family around i have to go crew cab... then buckets up front... computer in
the center console with 4 or more screens on the dash for cameras, gps, etc....
Flatbed - major project.. to put a crew cab on my frame.. my current bed would need to be chopped.. if
so.. chop both sides.. front and bring tailgate back and cut frame down... better departure angle.
There are other things on my list to do..
hopefully you had a good time reading what i have gone through.. although I left ALOT out... and have MANY
more pictures....
and when i get her back on the road in a few weeks and get through inspection im taking her out and
breaking her... SHE OWES ME SOME FUN TIME!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, congrats on keeping the build going so long. I like to see guys sticking with it and ending up with what they want in the end and enjoying (for the most part) all their hard work.

I don't think some of your pics are showing though. The links work, but some of your posts just have a year and nothing else. Is there supposed to be pics or something?

Keep it up man. You can take pride in knowing that you built and kept it a work in progress all these years.:waytogo:

good summary of the build, just happy to see you working on it again

thanks.. and yeah i put the years as i have to get back to adding... more of a place holder...

oh yeah.. i also put links.. so non members can enjoy the links...

plus i didnt know how many pics you can put on one post...

I enjoyed that!

as much as i have so far???? :haha:

good summary of the build, just happy to see you working on it again

yeah she is wired.. but for oil gauge.. then i can put it together... dash pad/gauge cluster cover/door panels

adjust timing/carb

few minor things.. and she is good to go... i havent put it on the road yet as i want to have it DONE in the sense of put tags on it.. and go for a ride.. not have to tinker with it or have it on the road for a few weeks before it leaves the driveway... :doah:

Last night i told the wife i was going to put the truck on the road.. since i was off... watching the kids so she could go to the rachael ray show up in NYC...
well she reminded me that I didnt want to put the truck on the road until I could put tags on it and just GO.. so mainly done... well she had a point there.. so she is gone... i had our 4 year old today..
just didnt get much done in the house.... took kids to friendlys... well got home.. they went to bed and when they were sleeping..

1. Door panels on - no screws though
2. Instrument cluster in - got my mechanical oil gauge delema fixed AND IT WORKS
3. Put dashpad back in.... gauge cover on - seems i broke it at some point so need a new one.. grrrr
4. Even put the metal piece on under the column
5. Since 1993 I put a different dual tank setup in.. and had the tank switch just hanging there... well tonight I actually drilled the holes and got it in.....Something so stupid but SAWEET!!!!!!!

Started truck and turned the lights on... hmmm turn signal lights are on...both of them... use the turn signals and they flash.. WTF?!?!?!?! Lookup and realize my Volt gauge isnt working.. and my Dash lights are out... well go figure.. my Oil gauge works great though!!!!!!!!! 60psi?!?!?!?!?!
So took the dash all apart and viola... 2 ground wires came off... put them back on and back in business....
So got to get me some screws to put it all back together.. maybe a gauge cover...
just go over things... and make sure all wires are out of the way.. tied up to not get snagged or burnt...

Nice build project.

thanks.. it has had its ups and downs...

funny thing is we had whirlpool out a few years back.. truck was bigger... and the guys were checking it out.. my wife looked over (i wasnt home) and said.. yeah that is his girl friend.. he will get rid of me before her... and their jaws dropped she said...

it is paid for and there is no good reason to get rid of it!!!!!!!!!!!

future plans are crew cab and some modified bed..... CANT WAIT :woot:
this year is to get it on the road.. basics done.. next year upgrades (headlight relays/pontiac trans sport alt upgrade/ winch rewire and more...)

nice thread, nice truck. thanks for posting. what's the Pontiac Transport alternator modification?

my truck has a 63 amp alternator... 2 wire.. the pontiac trans sport is a 3 wire 140 amp.. already got the parts... alternator from car-parts.com for $40 shipped... i got both 3 wire adapters.. there is a plain plug ($6 at autozone) then a ac delco $25 unit with a resistor for the exciter...

see here...
http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=185231&highlight=pontiac+trans+sport

It's a good thing to have that little metal cover in place up under the steering column. Mine was broken by thieves and when I replaced the column they broke, I couldn't find a new peice to go under it. Anyway, whenever I have to get down to work on something on that side of the cab, I always bump my head or arm or something on that uncovered spot's rough edges and scrape myself. Aggravating...

i have extra metal doors.. 2 of them.. black.. and i have 2 or 3 of the plastic pieces that go down there... but they are specific.. i put all 3 on to find the right one to my gauge cover...

if you want the metal piece.. pay for ride to ya and you can have it....
