78 k5 6.5td swap questions

Will take some pictures throughout the swap. The 95 6.5 came with a.c. compressor so I want to keep that on my k5. What year of s10 (blazer or truck?) Do I need to look for to make room for the turbo.

So far I have finished pulling the 6.5 out of the the 3500, pressure washed the engine bay. Tomorrow I plan to swap the 2000 water pump with the better fan, replacing oil pan gasket, new timing chain, and rear main seal on the '95 6.5. Then stuff it into the 3500. When all said and done I will do a complete rebuild of the 2000 motor to swap in the k5.

Sorry guys it's been slow progress. Finally got the 95 engine in the truck and all the differences in bracketry figured out. Put fluids in today and finally started it. Now I just have to button up a few things tomorrow and get the truck sold. Then on to ordering parts to rebuild the 2000 to put in the k5. Will take a few pics along the way and post.

Ran into a few issues with the serpentine belt not running centered on the tensioner pulley and took awhile to figure out. Once I did, I started it up and took it for a test drive. I have a couple of coolant leaks and a couple of gauges not working but overall I'm glad it's up an running. I have to change out the heater core next and get it on Craigslist.

anyone on here interested in buying a newer IP off the 2000. I would like to get 350 to go towards the core charge for the mechanical IP.

So I finally got the 3500 home today. It still needed few things to get done. One was the heater core which took about 30mins and the other was removing all the hack job wiring, which was a lot. Also one of the front tires had a flat spot on it so I replaced it with one I had lying around. Left on the to do list is to find a few dash panels that are missing and replace 2 wheel studs on the front passenger tire. Things are coming along nicely and the more I do to the truck the more I want to keep it.

Well I topped off the dex cool this morning and then started the truck. After about 30 seconds it just shut off, then it started right up and shut off a few seconds later again. Kept doing this. New to the 6.5s is it a bad pmd? Thanks for any info.

Sounds like it. Air bubbles in the fuel line will also cause stalling, but it will also include stumbling as the air bubble passes. So I'd look at the PMD, especially if it's still mounted to the injection pump. Turns out that was a terrible place to put it. Even on @GWeakland620's truck.

A random wiring fault is less likely, but would also cause it to abruptly stop.

Yep, check to see if the PMD is still under the intake. If it is, start there. Cheaper than a new pump, and would eventually fail anyways.

Yeah the 95 and 2000 both had the pmd relocated. Plugged in the 2000 pmd and started it up and let it run for about 10 minutes. Hopefully that was it. Would suck to replace the IP when I already had it apart and could of replaced it easily. Thanks for the help.

Do you guys know of a reputable machine shop in Colorado to hot tank, inspect, and bore the 6.5 block? Also to do a rebuild on the heads.

Took the heads off tonight. Found the culprit of the blown head gasket. Looked at the heads and cylinder walls and everything looks good. still has good hatching on the walls so I might just re-ring it, put new bearings in and freshen up the heads and call it good. Going clean up the heads in the parts washer and take the oil pan off tomorrow.
