781 heads

049 is also a great number

Just to say it out loud, the 781 and 049 castings are nearly identical so they're no just a great number but a fine substitute if you can't find 781's.

I have a set of ported 049s on a 427 making 475 rwhp (660ish flywheel). Gm ovals make a great performance head.

what about the intake?? should there be a certain model i should be looking for to fit with the heads??

any recommendations?

Typical voal port aluminum intake, not a OE cast iron (boat anchor). As for which one, it all depends on application/usage. For an average truck wanting good torque operating under 6k, I'd say a Edel. Performer RPM.

Coupla threads on BBC builds including 781 heads....

mine

Greg's

This is more in-depth and maybe a bit off-topic from the OP in this thread, but hey, big blocks are just plain fun... :deal: :D

if you are real tight for money a 65-69 325hp/350hp 396 intake is pretty nice and much better than a 69 and newer low rise.

I guess I am going to throw this out there just from my experence. If you are building a truck engine that will not really spin over 4500 peanut ports aren't that bad. I have a 80k 79 454 with 7.8 to one a mild cam, wieand street warrior (peanut port) and headers and with 4.11s it will easily smoke the both 37s on my truck. I really want to build a budget 496 with a ported set to see how it will run. Once I get my current engine dyno tuned I will post up the numbers. I built it for torque so the hp may not be much but the low end grunt it awsome.

what are the casting numbers on the peanut port ovals?
