79' GMC C15 - Spruce Caboose

79 GMC 1500
I've been absent for quite some time as my blazer has just been sitting with nowhere to really work on it and also the motivation was stolen by the 82 Yamaha bike I've been building since July. But the other day a buddy of mine said he was getting rid of his truck. He had gone back home to Saskatchewan a few years back and got this farm truck out of the barn and drove it to bc, where he's dailyd it since. He was using it as a work truck and worked it hard on the body, just strapping dump loads n what not since he didn't have any real liking to squares . I've been getting ready to sell the blazer and I think this will be a great replacement. And way more useful for bikes, toys and other stuff you need 8 ft of room for.

As it sits its bone stock, not sure what motor yet, gotta scrub the engine bay and find the suffix code, anything but a 305 would be ideal. 2wd , ten bolt rear ( not sure of gearing) ... and yea that's about it. It has the usual cancer but most of the rust on the truck is from the last year or two, and just surface at this point. It runs and drives great, brakes need some maintenance and bleeding, and I'm sure every front end component can be replaced. Carb was recently rebuilt by a shop. Don't know much about it since my friend Scott didn't have a clue. I figured I'd honor the name. Weve always called it spruce caboose so I'm gonna stick with that

It's got 184k km on it. His grandpa bought the truck brand new n said it's only been rolled once.

Itll be a little bit until I dig into her, gonna start stock piling some parts for brakes and front end.

Happy to be back!

Took me a minute to realize you meant it had rolled the odometer, not the entire truck. :haha:

What year is it? The engine color looks a lot like the alpine green of the 327 in my '66 C20.

:haha: I hope that's what he meant !

It's a 79 , hopefully I can find the paint code for when I buff all this surface rust.

Hi Nick!
Looks just like Gangrene! Except for way nicer! Lol
Same year “79 “same emblems on the fenders.
Should be a 350 in her.

Hey dean! she sure does. Little less hole-ey. If I recall properly you sent it sitting on death row?

And yes I think it is also but could be a 305 350 400 potentially?

Haha! The body and frame are gone. Still got the engine, 465, pedals, and the rad support. The box went on the 7de7 and that truck got sold.

I do love that colour green! Mine was way to far gone to save.

I'm glad you kept all the good stuff! I wish this thing had a 465 but the auto trans is sorta nice change. My goal with this thing is to be a functional daily with some speed and fun. So it ,may just stay auto.

I hope ratbags doing well, as well as the family! Any fun projects on the go?

Auto is nice. I’d leave it it ,465 is no fun in a 2 wheeler.
Ratbag is parked for the winter... ran the last time I tried it. Lol! We are all doing good Kate helps us with the cows. Colby is in Okds for two months, first year Ag tec school. He got a job working at Pentagon in Lacombe. Full time there for a year now. Only fun projects for us in keeping our old Diesels running!
Seen a few of pics of your Yamaha project! Looks like fun.! I like the 80s rice bikes. I used to ride a 78 KZ 1000 Good times!

Oh wicked , good for him!

Yea the 82 xJ has been a huge change from a 4X4, which has been nice. Everything's light , I can sit in a chair half the time Haha. This is how she sits right now.

A kz 1000 would have been fun! This 750 even rips pretty good!
Been back on ck5 for a day and threads already derailing. Some things never change :doah:ha

Wow I didn't notice that until you mentioned it, I didn't know it was still an option in 79

Since this bench is ripped bad on the driver's side I'm looking at finding a new one. Are all benches the same for mounting holes?

Spent some time cleaning the engine bay today to try and see where , and what's leaking , and also just to dig around since Its all so new to me.

Also found some goodies like this...

Surprised it ran so good with barely and ground left.. Temp gauge isn't working either and the heats not very hot. Forgot to test the gauge to see if it's a sensor or gauge issue. If I remember correctly I can ground it out to check for needle movement. Also would be worth replacing thermostat with a warmer one, if it's not stuck open and junk anyway.

Pretty neat everything is here and unmolested, I'm stoked on this considering the wicked deal I got on it.

Upgrading the brakes might be up on my list. They need attention by the petal feeling, and also he said the master leaks over time, so I gotta track down the leak in the lines somewhere. Maybe the petal feeling is just manual brakes as I've never had them before, but it's like a slight surging in the petal while braking, and the petal seems quite stiff. I was born in the 90s though, so maybe I just don't know what I'm talking about haha

Wow that engine bay really cleaned up!

It's getting there for sure. Engine needs alot more scrubbing to find out where all the crud and black gunk came from. Two cans of brake clean, half a can of engine degreaser and all purpose cleaner and every rag I own sorta ruined... or the washing machine
