79' GMC C15 - Spruce Caboose

79 GMC 1500
Turns out the 73-76 only NOS doors were quite the henths tooth, might be getting my terminator x max kit sooner than later:woot:
I was going say you shouldn’t have much trouble selling those. I know a guy in the Fraser Valley restoring a full vert blazer. He’s a guy that knows how to spend money. I could ask if he wanted to cut a set down!?
Pm me a price and I’ll send it to him If you like?

I actually already sold them, a guy in oregon is gonna ship them down there.
Thanks though, appreciate it!

Also just did some research and apparently the torque converter on the 4l60e ( from a 4.3L) wont line up to the gen 3/4 flexplate. I think i can run some sort of a spacer from a 6L and a flat flexplate as well. Gotta do more research though.

Has anyone had bad experiences running an out of tank fuel pump with the stock sending unit? I've read I should install a 15 psi stock pump as well to feed the out of tank pump. To avoid burning out the exterior pump?

You will have problems below 1/4 tank with fuel sloshing and sucking air/low pressure. Get a tank for an '87 that had a baffle around the fuel pump and drop in a walbro 255 into the stock TBI sending unit. This is a tried and true method that works well.

Ah okay right on. I'll see if I can find an 87 in a junkyard somewhere maybe. Or I'll price out a new tank.

For the walbro are you talking about one of these units, the in take one with the stock sending unit?

I wouldn't bother trying to find a tank in a junk yard, you can buy a new one for $90ish here in the states. Even if it's double that in Canada it's still worth it.

That seems to be the right pump. Yes it's supposed to be an intank pump and it should mount in place of the TBI fuel pump in the TBI sending unit.

Also, If you have the desire to swap to a blazer tank now would be the time.

What he said ^^^

Check out www.goodmarkindustries.com We have locations in Canada, and they come with a lifetime warranty. Or Keystone Automotive which is the parent company, but they also have fuel tanks with the same warranty.

I'm going thru the fuel tank conversion for EFI in my 73 C10 right now myself. My plan was to be a TBI pickup tank and hang a Walbro pump on a TBI sending unit that matches the tank.

#1 thing, TBI sending units are not available anywhere. I've been checking for the past month and have not seen them in stock any of the places I've checked; this is true for both pickup and blazer/burb TBI tanks. May be different in you neck of the woods, tho I suppose. But if that's your plan, start looking right away.

The filler neck on the TBI tanks are a different size than the 70's trucks; they are larger. The vent at the filler is larger on the TBI tanks as well. Luckily you can buy a hose for the TBI tank and it will fit over the original 70's size hose. I cut a small piece off the old hose to use for a sleeve to fit the new hose on the filler neck bolted to the bed side. Then you just trim a little off the length of the TBI tank's filler hose. The vent hose is 3/4" on the TBI tank and 5/8" on the old tank. I used a barbed adapter for that.

Since I can't find a TBI sending unit, I'm running an external Walbro pump. I'm using a sender for a carb'd pickup that has 3 connections; pump feed, return, and vent. The 73 sending unit didn't have a return line connection. I found out the hard way the carb'd trucks have 1/4" returns and 5/16" vents which thru me off because before this I've only messed with TBI senders and they are the opposite. So I started out with my return line on the wrong port.

I thought about swapping to a blazer tank at the rear but not sure what the main benefits are besides it being larger and mounted at the rear and out of the way. I did find new tanks on rock Auto for 120 bucks canadian. Shipping is a bit shitty but I understand due to the size of the object.

Hot damn! Thanks for that. Prepares me for what I'm gonna get myself into. I also can't find any tbi sending units in stock online. I'm going to check with my local parts supplier and see if they have any laying around in their locations. Ls swaps must be eating them all up haha!

I thought I had lucked out and found one on eBay but he refunded my order within an hour. That seller told me they have had a general shortage of parts since the pandemic started.

Holley makes a cool drop in sending unit with fuel pump that has the return built in so you don't need to route a return line. It also has one of their Hydramat deals on the pickup so you don't need a sump pan. Basically it will just drop in your tank you have now without having to add anything else. That was another option I had looked at but it was too much pressure for my Pro-Flo.

I lucked out and I think I found one at the local parts store. Should be there by tomorrow. Hoping it's the right piece... I kept making sure he knew it was tbi and not carb.. I guess ill know when I open the box and see an pig tail or not..:doah:

The holley unit sounds super cool.. hmm. Maybe I research what one of those goes for and compare it all.

I didn't have a return line, so that was a big factor for why I was considering the Holley setup. Plus my tank was in good shape, so it didn't need to be replaced.

Makes sense for sure.
Yea i was really hoping to not buy a new tank. I think mines in good shape. A new tank with shipping is 200, sending unit was 87, I called back to the store because when i got home n checked the part# on the invoice, it was indeed the wrong one. It was for a carbed 87, the guy who answered and was awesome. He found me the right one luckily, itll be there in a few days. Spectra PN#FG05N Lucky to have snagged one up. They do seem sold out everywhere online..
and finally the new walbro 255 pump will be about 150 it looks like. Might just go that way and get a new baffled tank out of it aswell.

im noticing on these tanks some say they have a baffled sump and some have an attached sump..? does anyone know the difference, google isnt being so nice to me on this one.

Also scored a cool pair of something I've never seen around before. I've seen the bowtie and the tent looking one, but not a gmc square. Gonna try and get these back in decent shape and throw em on the truck. I do plan on ballcaping the truck white so this will cut the line well behind the cab.

I think they are all the same if they are factory replacements. The "baffle" on the TBI tanks is more like a cake pan that's attached to the bottom of the tank.

Okay right on, I just worried because it seems like carb was still an option in 87, or did all carbed 350s go to tbi that year ?
