79 Jimmy - The Unexpected

1979 GMC Jimmy 350 3 speed
At the moment, we're most of the way through Phase 0 - Ownership. Per the state, I've had the vehicle appraised (at $600 - the appraiser said he'd go lower but they'd question it). I took the appraisal to the bond of surety outfit (the state wants $900 bond, the insurance outfit ran my record and charged me $100). Monday, I have an appointment with the DMV to get it inspected to verify the VIN matches the plate matches the registration.. That should result in a title in my hands, a fresh registration sticker, and a street legal vehicle.

Then the fun starts.

Well things do come around full circle sometimes. Cool you got it back. Got some work ahead of you but nothing that hasn’t already been done.

What’s the plans? Cruiser? Wheeling? Camping?

Cruiser/wheeler. Camping is a matter of a duffle bag or two, easy peasy. It gets me really excited to imagine cruising in a restored land pig on 33" Patagonias with the 350 screaming at people.

Phase 0 - "Ownership"; safe driver: tires, battery, fluids, tune up, brakes, winter tires (blizzaks, natch).
Phase 1 - "Big Sexy"; body work, carb, air con, dash pad, trailer hitch, wiring. massive rust removal and restoration.
Phase 2 - "Summer Special"; final summer tires (Milestar Patagonia?), 2" front 1" rear lift, restored Rally wheels, Dakota Digital gauges and sensors (including remote door locks and possibly remote start)
Phase 3 - "Not even my final form"; full floating high spindle tons with e lockers front and rear on stock leaf springs. Possible drop of lift and addition of air bags. Maintain good steering geometry.
Phase 4 - "LS Swap the World"; 5.3 or 5.7 to the tune of 500hp on pump gas, 4l80e, twin stick Atlas 205

DMV titled, registered, custom plates on order. 2004 Silverado 17" alloy wheels will NOT fit. 3.5" center hole required.

Progress is noodling along. Got my Amazon marker lights and LED compatible turn signal flasher and rear window motor in hand, they're in the back of the Jimmy.

Been focusing on the rims. Picked up some $150 17" 2005 toyota 4-runner rims from Craigslist. I overpaid. Wire wheeled the corrosion off 'em, hit 'em with the dupli-color engine enamel from Napa. Gonna mask 'em up tonight and spray the 'trapezoids' between the spokes Mariner Blue.

Also picked up a set of Blizzak LT265/70/R17 from Craigslist with about 800 miles on them, that's gonna be my build rollers and winter tires. If the funky lug nuts to put a Toyota mag rim on a 7/16-20 GM lug get in, gonna mount and get the Jimmy sitting on reliable rubber this Sunday. Probably gonna spend the whole day doing tires, we've got to pull apart the set off of the blue parts ford, pull apart the steelies from the Jimmy, put the parts ford rubbers on the steelies and put them back on the parts ford, take the steelies from the parts ford and put trailer tires on them for the boat trailer, then build up the toyota rims and get them on the Jimmy.

Crap. Crap crap crap!

Wrong blue. Nothing like the cap color either, thanks dupli-color!

There is quite a bit of it, but it's 30mm according to the googleator, and it's only 7.5 wide. Find out Sunday, after I repaint straight white.

Just got the Toyota rims on the Jimmy. These are 2005 Toyota 4runner rims, wire wheeled to remove corrosion and painted with Duplicolor engine enamel. I ran out of time to do the rest of the 'trapezoids' GMC Blue. I think I'm going to do the tiny divots GMC blue as well.

Required special order 7/16-20 lug nuts for the Toyota mag wheels, but bolted right up - aside from the driver's front, which was self-clearancing on the steering knuckle. A few minutes work with the grinder and no problem. I think this REALLY would benefit from a 1" or 25mm or 30mm spacer - the rims set the tires back quite a bit.

The tires are Blizzak LT 265/70/R17, 31.6X10.4R17 according to the google machine. They're a lot bigger, over an inch bigger than my 31.5" chapparals. With rubber that isn't 20 years old and valid plates, I finally took the piggy for it's first highway run, just a mile down the (windy mountain) road to my sister's house. Not a single problem, temp came up and stayed put, oil pressure good, voltage good. Power steering is weak and squealy, and I have no HVAC at all.

Progress!

All the oil change and tune up parts are in the passenger seat. As soon as the holiday is done I'm gonna hammer on Mill Supply and find out where my $3500 order of body panels is. :angry1: Tomorrow is break time, gonna potter around in the garage and do some cleaning, maybe take the Arrma Granite out for a rip. Steaks at 3pm. Monday is probably either tune up and oil change or boat wiring. We'll see.

Not a lot of time on the old pig, been focusing on the boat trailer and spent a week working in Dutch Harbor. But, got the 1.5" spacers installed. Fronts are good but would be better with 2", rear would need 3" to loom right. Guess the Toyota rims just have too much negative offset.20220717_160912.jpg20220717_160857.jpg

no pics, but got the Classic Industries hood hinges in, good parts. Hood is much smoother and easier - the rivets had wallered out and the oem hinges had a lot of 'pressure' had to be applied to them before they would pop over and actually actuate - THIS IS WHY WE HAVE BENT HOODS.

Looking for a lighter duty set of hood springs, but not looking very hard. Boat trailer is eating my lunch, timewise.
