Depending on the lift of that cam he may need new ones anyway. Same goes for shave to the valve guide bosses to limit the spring retainer to valve guide contact the Vortec heads are known for in stock form.With that engine sitting as long as it has, you may want to look into new valve springs.
It does, but I have other plans for it. And I'm trying to get a little better mpg than 10 along with the benefits of fuel injection.I thought the 400 ran well already?

The stock valve springs suck when new.
I have a set of Comp Cams beehive springs and retainers that allow .540 lift without machine work. I can do whatever needs done for the springs & guides.
The new new cam is .485/.495 lift. This is it...
