79 K5 H-Bomb build

I would if you are trying to get 8" of lift, but they have their reasons I'm sure.

There isn't a lot going on in this thread, but I do have an 8" lift in it.

Good stuff there. Thanks for that link.

Not too much to add but I got both seats finally mounted. Anyone thinking about ordering for corbeau... be warned. The seat "brackets" are complete ****. Nor do they care that they are ****. The driver's side was not too bad but the passenger side was not close (had to drill new holes), you lose the "tumble" feature, and they are not well made. I knew I should have fabbed my own but was really hoping to save a bit of time using there "direct fit" brackets. Complete waste of money. I tried to be patient with them and give them the opportunity to make things right but they could really care less. Oh well, lesson learned.

That being said the actual seats are quite nice and seem to be good quality.

I still need to get the tuffy box done...

Also leaned the tires on the Blazer for sh*ts and giggles.

I prefer the stock seats.

Martin

I didnt care for them to be honest. Too low, wrong driving position, and kinda ugly. Too each his own.

The rear seat is at an upholstery shop being done... I did have them keep it somewhat "stockish" looking although the material is going to closely match the Corbeau seats but in a "stockish" stitch pattern.

Decision time... Build the Big Block and drop it in or get the one tons/tires under there? I don't want the rig to be down for the entire summer and want to enjoy it... so I want to do one or the other but not both at the same time.

The motor first would be the simpler aproach I would think. Then later you can do the th400, doubler, axles and do the drivelines modifications once.

Axles are easier.

Martin

So axles... that would require:

-a new steering box as my dana 60 is already set up for hydro and crossover steering (need 2wd box)

-xj shaft as long as I'm doing the box

-Top spring plates (UD plates from DIY4x)

-might as well grab new ubolts

-Driveshaft modifcations- this one is tough. I have the doubler and the th400 to think about and dont really want to pay to modify them twice.

-pretty sure I can rob the brake lines from the parts rig but need fittings

-Shocks

-new 14 bolt perches

-traction bar

-modify exhaust as it terminates right where the shackle reversal would be

-degree shims

-rear 4" lift springs to match the 8" springs up front (shackle reverse to make up the difference)

-dyna beads for balancing beadlocks/tires.

What else am missing?

Motor swap/build-

-DYI4x competition mounts

-electric fuel pump

-fuel pump regulator

-headers. Looks like people are pretty happy with the sanderson BB8s?

-Build exhaust

-what else for the actual swap?

that looks like a pretty solid list, there will always be little crap to buy. For the headers I've heard the sandersons are nice, I'm running the longtube headmans on my BBC, they clear the shackles fine but the collector rubs the front driveline. I'd recommend some shorty's for sure.

For the exhaust, are you going to merge before the t-case so you can route the exhaust on one side? Not sure if your cases are clocked?

I know not running full length headers is sort of crime on a semi-built BBC but running the shorties just makes life easier especially when dealing with drivelines and such. I learned that lesson on my last build.

As far as the exhaust... that is going to be a game time decision. I'd like to keep the exhaust true duals with a crossover if possible but I'm also not willing to have an exhaust that hangs too low either. The parts rig has a set of flowmaster 40s on it that I am intending to use. I havent eyeballed that doubler too much yet to see if the previous owner clocked it or not.

Can I talk you into some pics of how your exhaust is routed?

I can take a couple better pics this weekend but it's basically straight out the headers, passenger side goes up and over the np205 and straight back into the muffler with turndowns. The drivers side just had to go up over the trans crossmember so it was a pretty straight shot.

Other thought that we were just BS'ing about at work. I could find some 35ish cheap tires that'll fit my bead locks, get some conversion u-joints for the 1 tons, buy the steering box, and maybe have to modify the drag link. That wouldnt be too bad to slip the 1 tons in there for now...

Man, that thing looks too nice as it is to hack it up and make it a crawler. Can I persuade you to get one in rougher shape to build out?

Just picked up my back seat. Great job by Beaverton Upholstery here in Oregon. Couldn't be happier with the result:

Lol, that's what the guys at the upholstery shop just said. People keep sayin' that. It's giving me a complex on what I should do with it. :doah:

I've been following along on your build and I love every bit of it. Thanks for checking this build out.

IMO if you're doing the one tons you need to do crossover as well. As soon as you get offroad the push pull brings the suck. I still think doing the motor is the best move, then the tons, springs, trans, doubler, drivelines at one time.

Or just drive it as is for the summer......

back seat looks bitchin BTW

He says earlier that the Dana 60 is already set up for hydro assist and crossover.

If you're comfortable with swapping out the 4 wheel drive to a 2 wheel drive sector shaft in the gear box you could do that. That is if your steering is tight right now and the box isn't leaking like crazy. It should be cheaper that way.

I would think about which one you could do with the least amount of downtime. Is there anything wrong with the current engine? You say it's pretty new.
