79 K5 "MilkDud"

79 K5 Rockcrawler Build.
I apologize in advance it's going take me a few to get this all up to date. But better late than never I guess.

So I started ordering a bunch of parts, some of the stuff I had already as I was going build a set of tons for the T100 like a Dana 60 and Van width 14FF as well as 6 lug hubs from SAOR. I like good parts but I also don't have alot of money so I try to save where I can. I took the time did the research and shopped around and it was cheaper to buy bearings seals races etc separately than it was to buy in a kit. And it's nice that the D60 and 14FF share alot of the same bearings and races. Also for up front I installed the super60 axle nut to replace the std nut washer lock nut style as well as some wilwood calipers and yukon hubs. Axles are both loaded with 4.88 and Yukon Grizzley Lockers. As far as steering goes I am running DIY4x high steer arms with ORD drag link and tie rod set up as well as a whole PSC kit supplied by ORD with ORD frame plate kit. A XJ steering shaft was used to replace the factory rag joint set up. PSC ram is not yet mounted. 20200808_151549.jpg20200808_154356.jpg20200825_052828.jpg

Moving onto suspension. Front springs are 52" easy rides with over loads removed. I'm sure once they break in I'll be adding another leaf to the pack but went this route mainly because cost. I think I picked them up for $380 pair brand new. Figured it was worth a shot. Front is mounted to a DIY4X ABomb and DIY4X shackle mounts.

Rear set up I knew I wanted custom springs made because I wanted to move the axle back and I wanted to do it without useing a easy inch. Nothing against them except the fact in my head it's just another piece that does not need to be there. So called ORD ordered a set of stock Height (with my estimated weight set up) 54" springs with the pin offset 2 inches back witch makes it a total of 3inchs back from stock over the 52s. I did this in part because 1 I wanted the tire further back and 2nd because when doing the shackle flip (4" DIY4X Flavor) it actually swings the spring forward a bit and with the stock 52s and the flip during mock up the tire was forward of center and that buged me so I did the calculations and that's where I knew I wanted to move it 3" back.

Picture is with it actually mounted it the rear holes on the perch to essentially make it 2" back witch centered it like factory. I'll be moving it to the center pin to help minimize the trimming I'll have to do up front and will set me at my goal of 110" WB20210417_074125.jpg20210417_142255.jpg20210417_145017.jpg

I picked up some TMI beadlock kits as I've use them on pretty much every build because why not? Went on Ebay ordered the wheels I wanted then found a deal on some 40s and just said well I may not need them for awhile but that deal is hard to pass seeing at the time 40s we're going for high 400s well now I'm really glad I got em.

So not long after I built my bead locks I came across some pro comp trilogy bead locks that were stupid cheap IMO. Even 4wp said they could not match the price or come close to it. So I called the company asked if they had them in a 6on6.5 with 3.75bs and she said yup and quoted me the same price as I saw online so I ordered 5. not sure when they will end up on the truck but I have em just incase these TMI try shaking the truck apart. Way I see it If they run good I'll probably run em tell its time to get new tires then sell the whole package and put new tires on the pro comps. I did use 1 pro comp wheel for my spare. And no those red lug nuts are not what's going on it was more a joke as they were for my sons Dodge ram.

For those wondering I went to a 9/16 1 ton doge wheel stud so no need to worry about looseing a wheel because of tiny 7/16 factory studs.

im postimg screen shots of stuff for 2 reasons.
1 is reference on where I found the deal. Tho the price might not be the same the seller may still have the best price at the time.

2nd is for part number reference if one is doing the same or looking for the same.

i screen as much as possible with items I buy incase I need to go back and reference something seeing its a melting pot of parts.Screenshot_20220922-230335_eBay.jpgScreenshot_20210127-094438_Chrome.jpgScreenshot_20220922-231436_Instagram.jpg20210207_142743.jpgScreenshot_20210109-112257_eBay.jpg

Keep it coming! When you started this thread I figured you had a second truck. I had previously searched for a build thread on your Blazer so I'm looking forward to all of this. :pimp:

So when I bought the truck it had a pretty worn out low compression 350 in it. Would be lucky to make 150 hp so Seeing I was already this deep in the project why not go all the way and toss a new crate motor in? I wanted something affordable but had some more power. After searching and researching I landed on a Blueprint Long block 375hp/400tq for less than 3k. Roller cam vortech heads and 9.5:1 compression. And of course I couldn't just throw the factory v belts on so buddy and I decided to hook the trailer up and go up to Twin falls and dig around some salvage yards. Turned out we scored pretty good. First yard we went Into was the last. I found a serpentine belt bracket set up in a 94 1500 series work truck had the AC idler pully and no smog pump for $30 bucks. Found 2 mint doors than will become half doors, this was also the trip we found a 1 ton chevy express with a 14ff witch is 70"wms 2 wms for $200 and the owner said he had to pull it and load it do to insurance so of course I was not mad. As he was pulling that for me my buddy found a HP KP60 from a ford to use on his Tahoe for a whole whopping $300 dollars so all in all it was a successful trip.

Of course did the ORD engine crossmember well I was at it.Screenshot_20220924-060031_Instagram.jpgScreenshot_20220922-161833_Chrome.jpgScreenshot_20220924-060011_Instagram.jpg20210307_073927.jpg

The transmission shifted perfectly and if I were to guess it had been gone threw recently(ish) so no need to touch that. But here's where trying to go cheap really kicked me in the butt. I had already had a 2spd atlas kicking around the garage for 5 years from a previous project I was going build that just never worked out. Long story short I bought a D60 with a bunch of goodies like lockers gears Yukon hubs and 35spline stubs and the atlas all brand new never used for 3k. We'll I wanted to try and use the atlas on this project but also wanted a longer front driveline so why not toss a black box infront of the Atlas? Got everything mocked up and all I could think was how heavy this pig is and I'm putting my trust In A atlas witch is actually known to not be the strongest. They work great in sub 4500k rigs IMO. So after lots of lost sleep I scraped that plan and just made a call to the company who has taken alot of my money (ORD) and just ordered a complete 205 with their magnum box set up. I still have the 205 that came out of the truck but I really did not want to go threw it as I have limited time to work on this rig (trucker M-F home weekends) and had already burned up time getting the atlas mounted and crossmember made that I just wanted it to show up ready to bolt in and all I had to do was make a crossmember. I'll just stash my old 205 to the side incase I get board and want to rebuild something down the road. 20220805_171008.jpg20220814_103011.jpg20220813_093107.jpg20220814_144928.jpg20220814_212640.jpg20220816_102803.jpg20220816_103315.jpg20220816_115606.jpg20220816_171443.jpg20220816_173337.jpg20220817_161630.jpg

Now that the cases are mounted up I can fill this giant hole in my floor board and mount some shifters. My better half is highth challenged and I wanted to get the shifters layed back so she can reach well bellted in. I flipped the handles around on the twin stick to allow this to happen. And thats where i stand today 3 years later lol. Still need to finish the tunnel and knick out lots of little stuff before ordering up some drivelines and getting some exaust made. Im a truck driver and only have at most 1 day a week to wrench on this. Now that my son is almost 2 its alot easier to get in the garage and spend time with him in there than in the house. 20220910_094215.jpg20220910_100743.jpg20220910_173605.jpg20220910_191528.jpg

Great build! I'm looking forward to seeing how you finish out the tunnel sheet metal.

Dang man! You're not holding back with some very bitchin mods. Nice fab work! :pimp1:

Well here another update. Managed to move rear axle back another inch, trimmed the back up alittle and almost finished up the trans tunnel. Got everything spot welded in and seam sealed and 2 access panels to get to the shifters and transfer cases if need be. Going let the seam sealer dry and I'll rattle can bed liner next weekend and then modify the carpet hopefully to go back in. 20221016_090750.jpg20221016_133846.jpg20221009_111308.jpg20221010_064418.jpg

Been awhile on the update, started a new job last winter and been working non stop so garage time has been limited but here’s a year end update. Shifters are mounted, exhaust is made, Cooling system may be done. Not to happy with it but we will see if it causes me any problems. If so I’ll be buying a fan and radiator set up and just make it work. Truck breathed life for the first time in 4 years. Finishing up the hydro assist, bump stops and a minor brake leak at this point so I can toss the belt on and bleed the steering system. If there are any pictures you would like to see of the build let me know. I been slacking on the social media department so this is kind of a photo dump of the last year.
