8.1L vortec, missing emission pieces

Pics would be amazing, thank you. I’ll take whatever you want to go away and will gladly cover shipping. Build thread would be fun but I’m terrible at them. I will start “something” and put lots of picture in there.

I probably have a bunch of these parts too. Emissions not required on this side of the border. I pulled a complete 8.1L to swap into my crew cab. I recently priced a new crew cab and that's not happening so its probably swap time this winter. Sounds like between 3 of us you probably have these parts found. Will post up as I pull parts out of storage.

I know this is part of it.

Not sure if this is part of it?…

This is what I started with, it’s blown apart now. But if you see something you need, just point it out.

And if you chose to take Hank up on his offer, I understand. he’s closer to you for $hopping costs. I’m on the other coast. Regardless offer stands.

Pictures are good. I’ll save my questions for when you start something. :waytogo:

Northern Colorado is emissions and they’re very anal with the inspection.
What's required to pass inspection with a 200x engine in a 1991 truck? In some parts of the country you can't do it. Assuming you'll run the PCM that came with the engine, will you transplant the charcoal canister and EVAP system from a 200x vehicle? They typically use a pressurized fuel tank with a vent solenoid required for filling it.

I'm not sure you can visually inspect the 8.1L EGR valve in the vehicle anyway.

Joshuak, thanks for the pics. From what I see there I need the EGR and cooler combo, I already have the corrugated tubing that goes to the header and I’m not sure what that longer piece is. I’ll let you know if I need anything after the others reply too. I really appreciate this.

Blue85, excellent point about the visual inspection. I have an appointment with someone at the testing station next week to see what a pass or fail will be. I do have the stock harness and computer, plus my buddy has hptuners, so we can check all the right boxes before they scan the truck.

Yep, it's yours. Just PM me and address and I'll drop it off at the PO.

Purge solenoid is standard Gm stuff. You should be able to use a charcoal canister from any 2000’s era truck to finish off the evap system. I’ve got mine from a S10.

EGR was only used on earlier 8.1s as they got them to pass emissions without it in the later years. So depending on what year you say the engine came from you could technically say it doesn’t need it. What I mean is if you have to go to an emissions referee to validate that you have all the emissions equipment for the year the engine came from, call it from a 2004 or later truck. Federal emissions trucks on the later years only had cats, pcv and evap.

Most states require the emissions equipment from the year of the vehicle the engine came from and not the year the vehicle is. I’m not sure what state you are in but you may want to validate me on that.

Yep same as above, commieRado. Engine is from a 2001 burb so I’ll have to meet the standards before the EGR was deleted by GM.

May just be easier to move to a non emissions county than it would be to play guessing games with the DMV.
Shh, mine is registered in pueblo county at its second home. Aka the BigAssGas Garage.

Not sure this will save you much time, if rumors come true the whole state will be emissions testing. Good luck, I am glad I no longer have this head ache, fringes crossed that this won't change.

Wife and I are looking for land in Wyoming, sadly that won’t happen before I need emission testing again. May as well just meet the standards and be able to have it anywhere I want. This will be my last truck.

Thanks to Josh, the EGR is here. Anyone have a best guess on the wiring components? I may be better off trading my Howell harness and computer for a stock unit.

Howell uses a stock computer. I’d call them and tell them you are adding the egr and cap and see if they can build those circuits for the items. At most you would have to add those circuits into the proper unused pins on the pcm.

While you are on the phone with them, I’d find out if the tune you have has the emissions stuff turned on and if not you might have to send your pcm back to get it added to your calibration.

The harness and computer that came with this engine have the emissions tuned out. I have access to hptuners,I should be able to tune that back in.
Thanks Zoomad, I will reach out to Howell next week and see what they say.
